Carly May always has been fascinated with the family histories of others. As an adopted child with no idea of her own heritage, digging up the roots of others has become her career and her passion. Now it's taken her to Taos, New Mexico to record the history of generations of the illustrious Castillo family.
The women of the Castillo family are to be Carly's primary focus at the invitation of the elderly Miss Winifred Simmons, who is described as "tough enough to be Satan's sister." The only problem is that a Castillo married a Quintrell and the Quintrells have lots of secrets --- secrets they want to keep that way, and as a powerful political family, they know how to go about it. Carly is met with icy reserve from everyone except her benefactress. As Carly is about to find out, the connections in New Mexico intertwine until it seems that there's no one in town who isn't related.
While Carly is looking forward to her historical research, someone else is doing all they can to see that she leaves town ASAP. A dead rat, threatening phone calls, threats of lawsuits, and drugged drinks are only the half of it. Whoever wants her gone doesn't believe in subtlety.
But Carly is not completely on her own. She has made a friend in mysterious and standoffish Dan Duran. Dan has secrets of his own that he's not eager to betray, but the instant attraction between himself and Carly is making it harder and harder to avoid her many questions as he tries to protect her from her enemies and from herself.
Nonstop action, one mystery after another, and an interesting cast of characters make ALWAYS TIME TO DIE a darned good read. Elizabeth Lowell hits it out of the park with a hard-to-put-down story.
