Leon Uris passed away on June 21st at the age of 78. He completed his final book, O'HARA'S CHOICE, in the spring. It is an historical fiction novel about the U.S. Marine Corps that is scheduled to be released by HarperCollins in October.
Uris was born in Baltimore, Maryland, the son of a Polish immigrant. Though he failed English three times and never graduated from high school, he went on to become a bestselling author. Uris served as a Marine in World War II and then began submitting articles to various magazines. His first novel, BATTLE CRY, was published in 1953 when he was just 29 years old. He proceeded to write a number of hugely popular novels, including EXODUS (about the creation of the Jewish state of Israel in 1948) and TRINITY (on the conflict in Ireland). In addition to these bestsellers, Uris is also well known for his 1957 screenplay, Gunfight at the OK Corral.
