Only If You're Lucky
"If I ever read Satan's signature upon a face, it is on that of your new friend."
This quote, which opens Stacy Willingham’s third psychological thriller, comes from Robert Louis Stevenson and sets up her dark and twisty tale about friendship, secrets and lies.
Margot is finishing up her freshman year at a liberal arts college in South Carolina. She has not had an easy time of it and has not gotten along particularly well with her roommate. Enter Lucy Sharpe, a dynamic young lady who is openly sunbathing on the school’s lawn one afternoon. Margot strikes up a conversation with her. Before they part ways, Lucy invites Margot to live with her in a fully furnished four-bedroom house that she currently shares with two other students: Sloane and Nicole.
"ONLY IF YOU'RE LUCKY is a spellbinding novel with brilliant plotting and plenty of surprises. Stacy Willingham has outdone herself here, and the unexpected finale is one that readers will not soon forget."
The rent is dirt cheap as the house is owned by the neighboring fraternity, which sublets the property and acts as their landlord. The offer is too good to pass up, and Margot makes the trio a foursome during her sophomore year. ONLY IF YOU'RE LUCKY jumps back and forth between the beginning and end of that first year with Margot in her new digs. Chapter one moves ahead to show the police questioning Margot, Sloane and Nicole about Lucy, who has disappeared following the death of Levi Butler, one of the fraternity brothers.
Margot carries her own baggage throughout the novel as she is still grieving the untimely passing of her best friend, Eliza, with whom she grew up in the Outer Banks of North Carolina. Eliza died from a sudden fall during a party, which shocked Margot, who was not there when it happened. We eventually learn that Eliza had a prior connection to Levi, which makes everything that happens next both suspect and vital to the plot.
Margot still holds Levi responsible for Eliza's death. Lucy often enjoys playing Truth or Dare with whomever is around. When Levi participates in the game one evening, Margot and Lucy push him for the truth about what happened to Eliza and his possible involvement. Things heat up even more when Margot returns home for the holidays and observes something outside her window that makes her question who her friends really are.
ONLY IF YOU'RE LUCKY is a spellbinding novel with brilliant plotting and plenty of surprises. Stacy Willingham has outdone herself here, and the unexpected finale is one that readers will not soon forget.
