Chasing Sunsets: Angels Walking Series, Book 2

Mary Catherine has good friends, a rewarding volunteer position at an L.A. youth center, and a big heart. And therein lies the problem. The emotional bigness of her heart prevents her from diving head first into a romance with LA Dodger Marcus Dillinger --- a relationship that would bring her a bittersweet combination of joy and heartache. The physical size of her heart limits her future while inspiring her to “seize the day.”

With a rock-solid faith and a passion to be a difference maker, Mary Catherine is one of the earthly beings watched and protected by the Angels Walking team, Jag and Aspyn. Their mission, which takes place a decade after their previous mission in Book One of the Angels Walking series, is to pave the way for Mary Catherine and Marcus to be a couple. But Mary Catherine is forcing herself to steer clear of love, and Marcus is on the hit list of a notorious gang. CHASING SUNSETS will have the Angels Walking team battling demons and human emotions to accomplish their very important mission.

"With great imagery, clever dialogue and three-dimensional characters, [Kingsbury] portrays the ongoing battle between good and evil in a world where saints and sinners are often one and the same. I enjoyed this artful combination of action, romance and faith struggles."

Something good will come from the union of Mary Catherine and Marcus. Something that will change the world and bring throngs of people to Christ. Likewise, good will come from the youth center Marcus is opening in one of the roughest, gang-ruled areas of L.A. But none of this will happen if the evil one has his way. As unseen demons work to thwart the good, angels Jag and Aspyn tap into the power of Jesus to protect their assigned humans.

Mary Catherine isn’t sure how much time she has left, but she is certain of these few truths: God is in control, the world is broken, and there’s no denying her love for Marcus. The first will get her through her medical impasse. The second is her inspiration for helping people as much as possible in her remaining years. But the third, well, that just has to be set aside, because she will not reveal her medical condition or engage Marcus in a relationship that’s destined to end with her impending death. However, it’s impossible to stay away from Marcus when she’s volunteering for his youth center and with Mary Catherine’s best friend, Sami, engaged to Marcus’ friend, Tyler.

Marcus doesn’t understand the complex and totally wonderful Mary Catherine. She’s the real deal --- everything he dared hope to find in a girl. He loves her sincerity, faith, lust for life and compassion for others. He loves the way her presence makes him feel. But every time he starts to get close, she pulls away. He’s certain she has feelings for him, but something is keeping her from acting on those emotions.

While Mary Catherine and Marcus work through their challenges, 16-year-old Lexi is simply trying to survive. Her boyfriend is about to become leader of their gang, but first must kill Marcus Dillinger. Lexi’s short life has been full of violence, drugs, and boys taking turns with her. But something is gently tugging at her soul. Is it possible that there could be a life without so much ugliness? She wonders if the God her grandmother believes in could be real, and if her new mentors, Mary Catherine, Marcus, Sami and Tyler, could help her find him.

Although CHASING SUNSETS is the second novel in this series, it can be read and enjoyed without reading the first one (though you may want to do so anyway). Award-winning author Karen Kingsbury gives us complex angels and humans who struggle with their own emotions in a broken world. With great imagery, clever dialogue and three-dimensional characters, she portrays the ongoing battle between good and evil in a world where saints and sinners are often one and the same. I enjoyed this artful combination of action, romance and faith struggles.
