Floating and Reading....

My L.A. trip was a weekend of nonstop running. Breakfasts on Friday and Saturday morning were at the ungodly hour (at least to me) of 8AM. I know traffic in the city can be out of control, so I was up and out by 7:15. Both days as I drove down Wilshire there was a steady stream of...green lights. Seriously. It's like the city managers know I was born late --- and always run late --- and they had the green lights going like my own little red carpet. Thus I was --- and a drumroll here please --- early both mornings!
The Friday breakfast featured children's authors. Jon Scieszka, the national ambassador for young people’s literature, was on hand for a humorous hello. We all bowed to him. Eoin Colfer was the master of ceremonies, and Judy Blume, Sherman Alexie and Neil Gaiman were the guests. The conversation was spirited --- and a tad off-color in a most humorous way. Colfer could do standup; he is that funny. Blume, Alexie and Gaiman all have written for adults, as well as children and teens, which lent an interesting perspective to their comments. Blume showed a photo of herself at the breakfast 30 years earlier where her co-guests were Dr. Seuss and Maurice Sendak. For the record, Blume looks amazing for 70! For movie buffs, Gaiman showed some previews of the Coraline movie, which is due in theaters in February 2009, and it looks terrific.
Saturday there were two breakfast events, and I chose the one that featured four graphic novel authors. Jeff Smith, Art Spiegelman, Mike Mignola and Jeph Loeb were the guests. Their conversation about the format --- and the melding of prose with art --- was terrific. Spiegelman had a very humorous visual presentation that showed how pictures can tell a story and chronicled his early love of comics. This area of the market is growing rapidly, and we're going to be sharing a lot more with you about graphic novels in the months to come.
Throughout the conference there was lots of talk about digital publishing. I listened to these conversations trying to apply them to our readers. Thus the poll this week asks if you would want to read on a Kindle or a Sony eReader. And there's a second question that asks if you would be more interested in having a handheld electronic reader if the hardcover/e-version were both available simultaneously for the same price. I love gadgets, and still laugh that my first cell phone actually was a little suitcase (think Maxwell Smart), but somehow I have not rushed out to buy one of these devices. And I am trying to figure out WHY. I carry a ton of books when I travel --- which these days can get me over the airline weight limit pretty quickly and even will have me paying for a second bag, which is maddening. Maybe it's because I do not want one more thing that I connect to via battery or a plug in the wall. I want to know what you think about these devices, so answer the poll here.
This might be influencing me too. One of the things I do when walking along a beach, through an airport or down the aisle of an airplane is check out what books other folks are reading. I realized that if readers are reading on a Kindle or a Sony eReader, I have no idea what they are reading. This point was driven home to me by a story a friend told me this week. He flew back from LA last weekend, and the 14-year-old girl seated next to him on the place saw his copy of THE ART OF RACING IN THE RAIN and was intrigued by it. When he took a nap, he handed it to her and she happily read 150 pages before they landed. He plucked it back from her admonishing her to buy her own copy. Now if he was reading on a Kindle, could that have happened?
For the record, I also am the kind of person who checks out what other people have in their shopping carts at the grocery store. I have been known to leave my cart with the checkout person as I race back for something that I missed that I just "have to have." So much of what we do comes from observing others. Will books lose out if we go all digital? Just something to think about. After all, we never know what someone is listening to on their iPod, do we?
While the book show was quieter than usual this year, which it typically is when it's on the West Coast, it was great to catch up with people and to roam the aisles making notes for fall. Now back to this week...
I told you about this book a few months ago when I read an early galley, so I am thrilled to share that this week we bring you a new Suspense/Thriller feature for New York Times bestselling author Christopher Reich, whose new novel, RULES OF DECEPTION, will be in stores on July 15th. I have read Reich in the past and enjoyed his writing, but this time his plotting and character development is ramped to a whole new level. It reads both quick and sharp. The weather is promising to be hot this weekend. The pool (finally!) is at a temperature where I can contemplate swimming without unpacking my wetsuit. When I am not in the water swimming, I am going to be reading in the hammock or floating on my pool chair. There's a pile of books with my name on it, and I am ready to read them. 2008 Summer Golf Books Roundup
|
While professional golf tournaments are traditionally held year round, it’s not until Augusta National welcomes tour players to the Masters in early April --- the first of the sport’s four major professional championship events --- that the attention level paid to golf starts to rise. The opening of the season each spring is also the time when publishers release a large crop of golf books, and 2008 is no exception. With the U.S. Open getting underway on June 9th, Bookreporter.com’s Stuart Shiffman takes a look at some of this year’s selections --- which fall into a wide range of interesting subjects, including instruction, biography, golf history and fiction. The days may be getting longer and the temperatures are on the rise, but what’s summer without the beach reads and the big blockbusters? Luckily, Bookreporter.com has both of those covered with our annual Beach Bag of Books Giveaway and our latest Books into Movies feature, which offers an array of literary-inspired films sure to please the palates of moviegoers of all tastes and interests.
Those who enjoy thought-provoking dramas will have much to ponder with When Did You Last See Your Father? --- which follows a man coming to terms with his father’s terminal illness --- and Brideshead Revisited, a period piece starring Emma Thompson and Matthew Goode, based on the classic novel by Evelyn Waugh. The Midnight Meat Train, inspired by a short story in Clive Barker’s BOOKS OF BLOOD anthology, and the Vin Diesel sci-fi action/adventure flick Babylon A.D. promise to deliver all the heart-pounding action and spine-tingling suspense audiences expect from a summer escape movie.
Lighter fare for younger viewers in the next few months include the highly anticipated sequel to The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants, featuring everyone’s favorite denim-clad quartet; Kit Kittredge, starring Abigail Breslin as the young amateur sleuth and aspiring writer from the popular American Girl series; and the Jules Verne-inspired Journey to the Center of the Earth 3D.
