Snow Day

I got home around 7:30 Tuesday night and saw the words "Snow Day" scrawled across the calendar in the kitchen for the following day. Only a few flurries had started to fall, but clearly my younger son was wildly optimistic about the pending storm. By 9:30 the snow was falling faster and then the trifecta happened that all kids dream of in this modern age: We got an email, website update and phone call that school was going to be closed for the following day. I was grateful to whoever had chosen to call this one the night before. Truly those 5:30AM calls have the phone ringing way way too early for me. My next hour was spent emailing Cory's friends to set up "Snow Day at Our House," one of my favorite events.

Throughout Wednesday morning, his pals arrived at the house with bags of snow gear. Day went like this: Board games, snow fort building, hand mom wet clothes, hot chocolate, snow fort building, hand mom wet clothes and more board games. Two of them ended up staying for dinner (extra valentines always welcome) and then they also slept over. Since we have a five-day winter break this weekend, this was the kickoff to the winter extravaganza that will have these three going house to house these next few days doing much of the same thing.

Why do I love these moments that make such memories? Because they remind me of the same kinds of snow days I had as a kid. I remember building snow caves, snowball fights, sledding for hours and drinking hot chocolate. Okay, mine was Swiss Miss or Ovaltine and theirs was Godiva, but you still are running the same film in your head as you watch them get all excited as the flakes start falling. Of course, I spent the day working in between stuffing the dryer, making the hot chocolate and taking food orders, but there still was something very festive about the day, which was special. In the evening we all devoured my heart-shaped cake with pink whipped cream and cut strawberries, which is a tradition. The only difference: This year there are no leftovers.

I actually am writing this note on Thursday as I head for College Tour: Phase One with my older son later today. Thanks to all of you who wrote me with your own college hunting experiences. I loved reading them. I responded to most and promise to get to the rest over the long weekend. You made me laugh and realize just how over-the-top this experience is. One author pal wrote last night that she thought "the whole search for the right school thing was the most stressful experience I've had as a parent." Oh, and I looked in the bookstore for some helpful titles, and saw shelf after shelf of them. Whoa, this really is its own cottage industry. Onward she said with trepidation...and we are not even up to the dreaded essays yet.

Lots of news this week on the site, including an interview and review of Robert Dugoni's latest DAMAGE CONTROL, his second novel. This is an author destined for huge success. Read him now so you can say you were reading him before he became a household name.

Many of you, like us, have a long weekend coming up. The way I see it, this gives you more time to read and shop for books.

Reminder that next weekend I will be at the South Carolina Book Festival in Columbia, South Carolina. I never have been to this event, but am really looking forward to it. Of course, in my brain I will share that I am thinking South Carolina is in the South and thus maybe it's warmer than here, but I fear I am sadly mistaken on just HOW much warmer. If you are planning to attend, drop me a note. Have a great week.

Bookreporter.com Talks to Robert Dugoni, Author of DAMAGE CONTROL

In this interview with Bookreporter.com's Joe Hartlaub, Robert Dugoni explains why his second novel, DAMAGE CONTROL, is much more personal and emotional than his debut work of fiction, THE JURY MASTER, and describes some of the strong women in his life upon whom his characters are based. He also discusses his interest in architecture and shares details about future books featuring protagonists David Sloane, Tom Molia and Dana Hill.

DAMAGE CONTROL by Robert Dugoni (Thriller)
With his New York Times bestselling debut novel, THE JURY MASTER, Robert Dugoni was compared to a young John Grisham. Now this brilliant storyteller returns with a thriller about a gifted attorney whose perfect world is torn apart by secrets and a crime only she can solve --- if she can stay alive. Bookreporter.com Talks to Elizabeth Crook, Author of THE NIGHT JOURNAL

In this interview with Bookreporter.com's Bronwyn Miller, Elizabeth Crook --- author of THE RAVEN'S BRIDE and PROMISED LANDS --- recounts her experiences from a trip to New Mexico that inspired her most recent book, THE NIGHT JOURNAL, and describes how her own fears of loss and separation worked themselves into its plot. She also explains how her "lack of vision" works favorably when it comes to writing novels, and shares her most and least favorite aspects of the creative process.

THE NIGHT JOURNAL by Elizabeth Crook (Fiction)
Four generations of headstrong women in the American Southwest, each with their own secrets, discover that it's their shared past that ultimately binds them together. Told alternately between a modern-day story and journals from the late 19th century, THE NIGHT JOURNAL illuminates the true history of the women in the Bass family. Reviewed by Bronwyn Miller.

Now, her memory and emotions scarred, Eve has returned to New Orleans to forget the past. But the past will not be forgotten. Eve's shattered memory has helped Cole walk on murder charges just as a new series of killings begins.

New Featured One to Watch Author: Brenda Rickman Vantrease, Author of THE MERCY SELLER

We are thrilled to bring you Brenda Rickman Vantrease as our newest featured One to Watch author. Vantrease's first novel, THE ILLUMINATOR, established her as a master of evocative historical fiction. Her latest title, THE MERCY SELLER, hits stores on March 6th and is a sweeping and glorious tale, steeped in history, romance and mystery.

We have 10 copies of THE MERCY SELLER to give away to readers who are interested in reading and sending us their comments about the book. Interested? Send your name and mailing address to [email protected] by February 23rd.

More about THE MERCY SELLER:
In the fifteenth century, with religious intolerance spreading like wildfire across Europe, English-born Anna Bookman and her grandfather, Finn, earn a living in Prague by illuminating precious books, including forbidden translations of the Bible. Finn subscribes to the heresy that people ought to be able to read the Word of God for themselves, without having to pay a priest for the privilege, but holding that belief is becoming more and more hazardous. When the authorities start burning books and slaughtering heretics --- including the man Anna was to marry --- Finn urges her to seek sanctuary in England, but her passage abroad will be anything but easy.

In London, Friar Gabriel dutifully obeys church doctrine by granting pardons . . . for a small fee. But then he is sent undercover on a spying mission to France, where Anna has set up a temporary stall as a bookseller. Anna has no way of knowing that the wealthy young merchant frequenting her stall is actually a priest --- just as Gabriel does not know he has met the woman who will cause him to doubt his vows.

As Anna continues her journey to England, where the movement to stamp out heresy is growing ever fiercer, Brenda Rickman Vantrease brings us a richly imagined and immensely rewarding novel of love, faith, and dangerous secrets.

A New York Times best-seller, it won the prestigious Bram Stoker Award and earned numerous critical raves. SCAVENGER, Morrell's latest novel, takes us in a harrowing new direction: a desperate high-tech scavenger hunt for a 100-year-old time capsule. Frank Balenger, the resolute but damaged hero of CREEPERS, now finds himself trapped in a nightmarish game of fear and death. To save himself and the woman he loves, he must play by the rules of a god-like Game Master with an obsession for unearthing the past. But sometimes the past is buried for a reason.

SCAVENGER is a brilliant, frightening hunter-hunted tale that layers modern technology over the dusty artifacts of earlier times. The result is a surreal palimpsest, one that contains the secret of survival for Balenger and a handful of unwilling players who race against the game's clock to solve the puzzle of the time capsule, only to discover that time is the true scavenger. Morrell's trademark action sequences are embedded with fascinating historical clues that make SCAVENGER a thrill-a-minute page-turner as well as a mesmerizing literary experience.
