Carol Fitzgerald's latest “Bookreporter Talks To” interview is with T.J. Newman. Her third thriller, WORST CASE SCENARIO, will be a Bookreporter.com Bets On pick just as her first two books, FALLING and DROWNING, were. When a pilot suffers a heart attack at 35,000 feet, a commercial airliner filled with passengers crashes into a nuclear power plant in the small town of Waketa, Minnesota, which becomes ground zero for a catastrophic national crisis with global implications.
T.J. shares how she came up with the idea for WORST CASE SCENARIO and the research that was required (including a detail that Carol saw to be totally plausible). She discusses her character development and why she feels that Joe Morton is the perfect narrator for the audiobook. We also hear about T.J.’s close relationship with her agent and how they work together.
We hosted this month’s “Bookaccino Live” book preview event last Wednesday afternoon. Carol talked about 24 books releasing between now and September 3rd, plus 16 from October, that we wanted to get on your radar.
Next month's “Bookaccino Live” book preview event will take place on Wednesday, September 11th at 2pm ET. The focus will be on titles releasing between September 10th and October 1st, in addition to a few from November, that we think will appeal to you. Her lessons on languages, history and writing have endowed her with a sharp wit and a gift for storytelling. But she is allowed no voice of her own. Forced to become a mistress to the Lord Chamberlain, who oversees all theater productions in England, Emilia sees firsthand how the words of playwrights can move an audience. She begins to form a plan to secretly bring a play of her own to the stage --- by paying an actor named William Shakespeare to front her work.

CREEP: Accusations and Confessions by Myriam Gurba (Sociology/Essays)
A creep can be a singular figure, a villain who makes things go bump in the night. Yet creep is also what the fog does --- it lurks into place to do its dirty work, muffling screams, obscuring the truth, and providing cover for those prowling within it. CREEP is Myriam Gurba’s informal sociology of creeps, a deep dive into the dark recesses of the toxic traditions that plague the United States and create the abusers who haunt our books, schools and homes. Gurba studies the ways in which oppression is collectively enacted, sustaining ecosystems that unfairly distribute suffering and premature death to our most vulnerable. She also examines how we as individuals, communities and institutions can challenge creeps and rid ourselves of the fog that seeks to blind us.

WHILE YOU WERE OUT: An Intimate Family Portrait of Mental Illness in an Era of Silence by Meg Kissinger (Memoir)

But behind closed doors, a harsher reality was unfolding --- a heavily medicated mother hospitalized for anxiety and depression, a manic father prone to violence, and children in the throes of bipolar disorder and depression, two of whom would take their own lives. Through it all, the Kissingers faced the world with their signature dark humor and the unspoken family rule: never talk about it. WHILE YOU WERE OUT begins as the personal story of one family’s struggles and then opens outward, as Kissinger details how childhood tragedy catalyzed a journalism career focused on exposing our country’s flawed mental health care.
