This week, we are calling attention to our 13th Annual Book Group Speed Dating event, which is now available for viewing. Earlier this month, representatives from six publishers presented 30 titles perfect for book groups that will be published between now and October.
Carol Fitzgerald's latest “Bookreporter Talks To” interview is with Lisa Wingate, whose new work of historical fiction, SHELTERWOOD, will be a Bookreporter.com Bets On selection.
Lisa explains the origin of the story, a piece she found about a woman named Kate Barnard that sent her down a rabbit hole of learning more about the children known as “elf children” who lived in trees. They typically were Native American children who were sought after for the land rights that they owned after the Dawes Act went into effect as they were landowners.
Lisa grew up in Eastern Oklahoma where the book is set and shares her history of the area, as well as her love of the Winding Stair Mountains where she frequently hikes. She and Carol also talk about shelterwood and the history that they were not really taught in school.
You have until THIS Friday, June 21st at noon ET to enter our contest for THE LION WOMEN OF TEHRAN by Marjan Kamali, which releases on July 2nd, and be one of our 25 winners who will receive an advance copy of the book.
This upcoming Bets On title is a heartfelt, epic new novel of friendship, betrayal and redemption set against three transformative decades in Tehran, Iran.
Here's more about the book:
In 1950s Tehran, Ellie lives in grand comfort until the untimely death of her father, forcing the seven-year-old and her mother to move to a tiny home downtown. Luckily, on the first day of school, Ellie meets Homa, a kind and passionate girl. Together, they play games and share their ambitions for becoming “lion women.” But their happiness is disrupted when Ellie and her mother are given the opportunity to return to their previous bourgeois life. Now a popular student at the best girls’ high school in Iran, Ellie’s memories of Homa begin to fade. Years later, though, her sudden reappearance in Ellie’s privileged world alters the course of both of their lives.
Our latest Summer Reading prize book is BELONGING by Jill Fordyce, a heartbreaking and hopeful coming-of-age story that traverses lifelong friendship, first love and a young woman’s fierce desire to transcend her traumatic childhood.
The contest is now up, so be sure to enter for your chance to win one of five copies. Typically these are 24-hour giveaways, but due to the Juneteenth holiday, we are extending the deadline to Thursday, June 20th at noon ET. That gives you an extra day to submit your entries!

1974: A Personal History by Francine Prose (Memoir)
During her 20s, Francine Prose lived in San Francisco, where she began an intense and strange relationship with Tony Russo, who had been indicted and tried for working with Daniel Ellsberg to leak the Pentagon papers. The narrative is framed around the nights she spent with Russo driving manically around San Francisco, listening to his stories --- and the disturbing and dramatic end of that relationship in New York. What happens to them mirrors the events and preoccupations of that historical moment: the Vietnam War, drugs, women's liberation, the Patty Hearst kidnapping. At once heartfelt and ironic, funny and sad, personal and political, 1974 provides an insightful look at how Francine Prose became a writer and an artist during a time when the country, too, was shaping its identity.

THE GARDEN AGAINST TIME: In Search of a Common Paradise by Olivia Laing (Memoir/Nature)

The work brought to light a crucial question for our age: Who gets to live in paradise, and how can we share it while there’s still time? Moving between real and imagined gardens, from Milton’s PARADISE LOST to John Clare’s enclosure elegies, from a wartime sanctuary in Italy to a grotesque aristocratic pleasure ground funded by slavery, Laing interrogates the sometimes shocking cost of making paradise on earth. But the story of the garden doesn’t always enact larger patterns of privilege and exclusion. It’s also a place of rebel outposts and communal dreams.

KALA by Colin Walsh (Literary Thriller)
In the seaside town of Kinlough, three old friends are thrown together for the first time in years. Helen, Jo and Mush were part of an original group of six inseparable teenagers in the summer of 2003, with motherless, reckless Kala Lanann as their group’s white-hot center. Soon after that summer’s peak, Kala disappeared without a trace. Now it’s 15 years later. Helen has reluctantly returned to Ireland for her father’s wedding; Joe is a world-famous musician, newly back in town; and Mush has never left, too scared to venture beyond the counter of his mother’s café. But human remains have been discovered in the woods. Two more girls have gone missing. And as past and present begin to collide, the estranged friends are forced to confront their own complicity in the events that led to Kala’s disappearance.
