Time Flies...
When I wrote one of my first 10-page papers freshman year of college, it was a daunting task. I remember it vividly as I got a measly “B,” no plus and no minus and not the “A” I was used to. Why? I had included two clichés. My professor told me to avoid clichés in theoretical writing at all costs and after that, I steered clear of them. I understand now why he was so stern in his dislike of clichés --- it instantly downplays the strength and originality of your argument. Luckily, I graduated, am no longer required to write theoretical papers…and so I am finally “free” to use clichés.

Since working in the real world, I’ve realized that clichés are sometimes the most effective and comprehensive one-line summaries of how life feels in that particular moment.

My life in the past few weeks can be summed up with the age-old cliché --- "Time flies by when you're having fun.” Feeling this way, I spent some time Googling "time" and "cliché" and discovered the following handful of short phrases that are all relevant to 20somethings --- "At the eleventh hour...At the last minute...All in due time...Rome wasn't built in a day...There's no time like the present."

The past few weeks have been a blur of fun…and travel for me --- from Charlotte to Miami and then BookExpo America (BEA). I know, an odd combination.

After a weekend in Charlotte to see an old friend, with unexpected travel delays on either end (the most unfortunate use of time), I went on a three-day extravaganza to Miami over Memorial Day weekend. How much fun was I having? Too much…since I only slept a total of 15 hours over the course of the vacation. It was my first trip to Miami, a place I had been planning to visit for as long as I can remember (Las Vegas and New Orleans are also on that list). I “needed” to experience everything Miami offered and I definitely “lived it up” --- from staying at a gorgeous hotel in Miami Beach, to eating delicious, authentic Cuban culinary delights in Little Havana, and dancing till 6AM (I watched the sun rise) at a 24-hour nightclub (I don't even know what neighborhood I was in at that point). So when my best friend and I boarded the plane Monday night we fell asleep in Miami and woke up in NYC, with a mutual rediscovered obsession for traveling to new places and having new experiences.

Within 24 hours of landing in NYC, I attended a panel on how book publishing professionals can effectively use Twitter at BookExpo America (BEA), the big industry book trade show!

During the three days spent at BEA, my coworkers and I sat in at panels such as “Editors’ Buzz Adult Books,” “Book Reviews & The Missing Code of Ethics,” and met authors and publishing colleagues. We were all simultaneously networking at the show and juggling office tasks, checking our work emails to make sure features and promotions went up as scheduled. BEA is the highlight of the year in the publishing industry, so everyone needs to push through the mental and social exhaustion that comes as a result of these three long days. I personally experienced the reality of those time-themed clichés as I balanced my networking time and my office time --- carefully choosing what work needed to get done, even at the last minute, and what work would get done "in due time" because after all, "Rome wasn't built in a day."

The other day I read an interesting piece about how time seems to go by faster as you get older. The author gives instructions on “how to slow down the pace of life (at least psychologically).” He suggests, “As much as possible, take advantage of new and unique experiences. When we go to the same places and do the same things, we don't make distinct memories and time seems to fly by.” More so, we should be “focusing on positive (rather than negative) past memories, trying to live more in the present, and holding a positive perception of the future - envisioning a future full of hope and optimism. In other words, use time wisely.”

Fortunately, when the lack of expenses (or time) restrict our capacity to travel, to have new and unique experiences, to prolong the feeling of time, we can read --- and have new adventures without ever leaving our beds...or the park bench...or the grass...or the beach (if you happen to live near one). I hope we can help you pack your imaginary bags with the books we have listed below and in particular, the great collection of 20 titles you can win in the 20SomethingReads Summer Beach Bag Contest.

Happy Reading…and here’s to another update in the near future, unless time comes between us!
