Hello, Rio!

Fact: August is bittersweet. Even though it’s still *technically* summer, we can’t help but notice that it’s more than halfway over. So we’re trying to make the most of it, despite the mind-numbing, crippling heat wave we’ve been dealing with in NYC. The silver lining is that we’re becoming real AC experts, and we’ll have the perfect reasons to stay indoors this Friday, when the Olympics and Suicide Squad grace screens big and small. We’re so pumped that the most anticipated entertainment events of the season are finally here that we find ourselves not only tolerating Katy Perry’s Olympics anthem “Rise,” but even listening to it in our off-hours. Anticipation and competitive sports make us do the craziest things!

If this year’s Olympics are anything like the ‘14 World Cup, then we’re all in for a special treat --- around-the-clock default TV and impromptu midday bar stops to join in on viewing parties already in progress. We’re particularly looking forward to a couple of Olympians we’ve all had our eyes on for years. We fell in love with gymnast Gabby Douglas four years ago, and now we’ll get to see her all grown up and doing her thing in Rio. Our all-time fave, swimmer Ryan Lochte, who just bleached his hair for the special event (does he realize that chlorine turns hair green? Judging from his Twitter account, probably not...), will also be there in all his swimbro™ glory. We’re going to try to keep our eyes on Usain Bolt because nothing is sexier than speed. We’ll watch Kerri Walsh Jennings with our jaws dropped because those women beach volleyball players are jacked in ways we’ve never seen before. And, of course, Serena and Venus Williams will be the cherries on top of our athlete sundae, because sisterly love is the best kind of love.

While we may not have been waiting four years for the Suicide Squad to hit theaters, it definitely feels like some sort of eternity. From the stellar cast (Jared Leto, Margot Robbie, Will Smith, Jai Courtney) and their offscreen shenanigans to the phenomenal movie posters we’ve seen plastered around the city, we only have high hopes for this one as the summer blockbuster to beat. The movie comes out this Friday, August 5th, and we’re already envisioning (dreading?) waiting on a line wrapped around the building. Our expectations for Seth Rogen’s ridiculous new comedy, Sausage Party, hitting theaters next Friday, August 12th, are also maxed out, and we’ll be sure to report back on both. Love, your neighborly movie critics.

And speaking of hot summer releases, kids, teens, and especially Potter-loving 20somethings were given a rare gift this past weekend --- on July 31st, HP’s birthday, no less --- with HARRY POTTER AND THE CURSED CHILD. Many of us can still remember staying up all night reading the original Harry #content, and this latest addition to the canon delivers on the nostalgia factor alone. Readers are feeling mixed about its format --- it was originally conceived for the stage, so the book is basically just the script of a play, novelization be damned --- but no one can deny how exciting it is to catch up with some of our favorite characters. We won’t spoil anything here, but the story revolved around Harry’s youngest son, Albus, who, along with his best friend Scorpius Malfoy --- Draco’s son, and not Papa Potter’s fave --- must contend with the legacies of their famous fathers and face a villain whose own father Must-Not-Be-Named. Shades of Star Wars, sure, but throw in some time travel and butterfly effect (sans Kutcher) and we have ourselves a rollicking, J. K. Rowling-approved good time. And did we mention that Hermione is the Minister of Magic, as we had no doubt the OG #girlboss would someday be?

A couple of Fridays ago, Nikki attended the Random House Open House for July. Curtis Sittenfeld started off the day discussing her book, ELIGIBLE, with Laura Brounstein of Cosmopolitan. 20SomethingReads personal fave Emma Cline (THE GIRLS), Imbolo Mbue (BEHOLD THE DREAMERS), Martha Hall Kelly (LILAC GIRLS) and Catherine Banner (THE HOUSE AT THE EDGE OF NIGHT) took the stage by storm as they talked about the writing process and the excitement surrounding their debut novels. Emma Cline was soft-spoken, sweet and charming (as expected); Imbolo Mbue really struck a chord with the crowd and made everyone laugh more than a couple of times; Martha Hall Kelly was remarkably personable and full of energy; and Catherine Banner hit close to home as she relayed her passion for Elena Ferrante.

In the afternoon, Kimberly Williams-Paisley kept things going as she talked about WHERE THE LIGHT GETS IN, a book about dealing with her mother’s rare form of dementia. Her story was deeply informative and inspirational; her biggest tip was to keep in mind supporting the caregiver as well as the patient. Dana Jacobi (THE POWER GREENS COOKBOOK) shared that parsley is an excellent antioxidant and not just a casual garnish, while Jenny Rosenstrach (HOW TO CELEBRATE EVERYTHING) and Jeanine Donofrio (THE LOVE & LEMONS COOKBOOK) taught us how to make a variety of pestos. We got to try some after and our verdict: Pepita (pumpkin seed) pesto is by far the best. Paula McLain closed out the day sharing her incredible, long journey to literary success. Her endless sass made us want to be her best friend. We ended the day with our author love tanks full and our TBR lists longer. We live-tweeted the event, so check it out here, and follow us so you never miss us again!

The contest portion of our Beach Bag of Books summer-long promotion is ending this coming Wednesday, August 3rd at noon ET, so enter now! Check out the feature for some great summer reads to close out this glorious season, and scroll down to see the full list. We’ll mention the five lucky winners in the next newsletter, so stay tuned to see if you’re one of the chosen ones.

As you lap up those numbered summer Fridays and solidify your Labor Day plans, here are some books to check out:

Bestselling author Jane Green’s latest, FALLING: A Love Story, is the perfect late-summer beach read. When Emma Montague left the strict confines of upper-crust British life for New York, she felt sure it would make her happy, but the cutthroat world of finance and relentless pursuit of more began to take its toll. On the move again, Emma settles in the picturesque waterfront town of Westport, Connecticut, where she decides to remake the dilapidated cottage she rents from Dominic, a local handyman who lives next door with his six-year-old son. They become friends, and slowly much more, as Emma finds herself feeling at home in a way she never has before. But just as they start to imagine a life together as a family, fate intervenes in the most shocking of ways.

Count on Lisa Scottoline and Francesca Serritella to deliver to deliver some last-minute laughs. The always funny mother-daughter duo are back with I'VE GOT SAND IN ALL THE WRONG PLACES, another collection of warm and witty stories that will strike a chord with every woman. This six-book series is among the best reviewed humor books published today and has been compared to the late greats Erma Bombeck and Nora Ephron. This seventh volume will not disappoint as it hits the humorous and poignant note that fans have come to expect from the beloved mother-daughter duo.

We just finished reading Ruth Ware’s stellar debut, IN A DARK, DARK WOOD, and can’t wait to get our hands on her chilling follow-up, THE WOMAN IN CABIN 10. Lo Blacklock, a journalist who writes for a travel magazine, has just been given the assignment of a lifetime: a week on a luxury cruise with only a handful of cabins. At first, Lo’s stay is nothing but pleasant. But as the week wears on, frigid winds whip the deck, gray skies fall, and Lo witnesses what she can only describe as a dark and terrifying nightmare: a woman being thrown overboard. The problem? All passengers remain accounted for --- and so the ship sails on as if nothing has happened, despite Lo’s desperate attempts to convey that something (or someone) has gone terribly, terribly wrong.

Until next time, stay cool!
