Sweet, Sweet Summertime

Even though temps have been Kevin-Hart-at-a-concert low in NYC this week (maybe that burn will warm you up, you’re welcome), summer is just around the corner --- or so we hear. Let’s call in Leo to explain global warming to us one more time. No complaints here, though; we love ourselves some good casual jacket weather. But with Memorial Day on the horizon, we’re making room in our bellies for all the corn, watermelon and Firecracker ice pops money can buy. It’s hard to imagine right now, but soon enough we’ll be showing off our awkward tan lines and desperately searching for respite from the city heat by checking out the blockbuster hits of the season.

Early buzz for X-Men: Apocalypse has been tepid at best, but it’s hard to imagine Nikki won’t have two thumbs way, way up for any movie with Fassbender on the marquee. And speaking of blind lust, Alexander Skarsgard and his rock hard abs will hit theaters in The Legend of Tarzan this July. If Jeff Goldblum is more your scene (we’re looking at you, Shara), make sure to check out Independence Day 2: Resurgence in late June. Raise your hand if Bill Pullman’s original Independence Day speech is still the most presidential thing you’ve ever heard. We will not go quietly into the night! Suicide Squad’s got us fantasizing about that gritty, outlaw life --- maybe we’ll start robbing banks so we can afford all these movies. Just call us Bonnie and Claudette.

And, last but not least, we can’t wait for Me Before You because books-to-screen are the damned best. There may not be enough tissues in the world to keep Emily’s tears from flooding the theater. It’ll be here before you know it, June 3rd, which is actually just right around the corner and maybe, once again, our love tanks will be full. We were lucky enough to score some advance screening tickets (a perk of being in the biz), and we couldn't be more pumped. There's nothing like a good group cry with all of your coworkers on a casual Wednesday evening #teambuilding. Most of us have read the book, and one of us is working on it overtime. We know, we know. Sometimes you're late to the party, but you can still enjoy yourself once you get there.

The other week, a bunch of us from The Book Report Network headed one block down to Random House for their special Open House day. We’ve been a handful of times before (they are typically held twice a year), and this spring session was just as good as all the rest. We live tweeted the event; you can check out our brilliant thoughts here. We saw some great authors talk about their work, writing process, inspirations and --- at least in the case of Questlove --- some all-time favorite meals (no doubt also covered in his latest book, SOMETHING TO FOOD ABOUT). Debbie Macomber, Anna Quindlen, Pierce Brown and Justin Cronin were also in attendance, along with Melanie Benjamin, Dawn Tripp and Helen Simonson, who sat down with our very own Carol Fitzgerald to discuss how well-behaved women seldom make history in our favorite panel of the day.

If you missed this one, fear not! You can follow along with us on Twitter as we live tweet from the special Summer Open House on July 22nd. Unfortunately, tickets sold out super fast, so if you were lucky enough to snag one, we’ll see you there. Otherwise, make sure you follow us on Twitter because you won’t want to miss this. Click here to get on board with our feed as Curtis Sittenfeld (ELIGIBLE), Martha Hall Kelly (LILAC GIRLS) and Emma Cline (THE GIRLS, which happens to be one of our top 10 books for Summer ‘16) will all be speaking, along with some other incredibly noteworthy authors.

While you patiently await some much-anticipated onscreen treats, here are some books to tide you over.

Everyone's favorite newscaster, Anderson Cooper, and his mother, Gloria Vanderbilt, tell the story of their relationship in THE RAINBOW COMES AND GOES: A Mother and Son on Life, Love, and Loss. Though Anderson has always considered himself close to his mother, his intensely busy career as a journalist for CNN and CBS affords him little time to spend with her. After she suffers a brief but serious illness at the age of 91, they resolve to change their relationship by beginning a year-long conversation unlike any they had ever had before. The result is a correspondence of surprising honesty and depth in which they discuss their lives, the things that matter to them, and what they still want to learn about each other. This book just might get us all to rethink our relationship with our parents as we get older!

THE VERSIONS OF US by Laura Barnett is a tale of possibilities and consequences that rings across the shifting decades, showing how even the smallest choices can define the course of our lives. The one thing that’s certain is they met on a Cambridge street by chance and felt a connection that would last a lifetime. But as for what happened next... They fell wildly in love, or went their separate ways. They kissed, or they thought better of it. They married soon after, or were together for a few weeks before splitting up. They grew distracted and disappointed with their daily lives together, or found solace together only after hard years spent apart. To get you even more psyched about it, think: Sliding Doors, ONE DAY and LIFE AFTER LIFE.

The child of Greek immigrants who grew up in a dangerous New York housing project, Max Pzoras triumphed over his upbringing and became a successful Wall Street analyst. Yet on the night he’s involved in a violent street scuffle, Max begins to confront questions about suffering and mortality that have dogged him since his mother’s death. In an ultimate bid for answers, he embarks on a dangerous solitary meditation in a freezing Himalayan cave, where his physical and spiritual endurance is put to its most extreme test, all in Karan Bajaj's beautifully written THE YOGA OF MAX'S DISCONTENT.

From ours to yours, have a relaxing and restful Memorial Day weekend!

5 Things We’re Obsessed With at This Very Moment, in no particular order:

1. Drake on SNL. Swwwoooooooon.
2. The new Instagram logo. We're all adjusting, and sometimes change is good.
3. Another Kardashian baby --- congrats, Angela K!
4. The new Radiohead and James Blake albums. Too much British angst, too little time.
5. The return of "The Bachelorette" next Monday, May 23rd.
