Let's Get in Formation

It’s no secret that every year we usher in the Valentine’s Day season with mixed feelings. If it was up to us, we’d still be delivering Disney punch-out cards to all of our fourth-grade class crushes. In these 20something years, we’re trying to nail some casual Sunday night dinner plans while simultaneously steering clear of those couples holding hands across the table. Splat!

Needless to say, love is...complicated, no matter what age. In 2014, we told you that Valentine’s Day was about sharing the love with all of your loved ones, your family, friends and, above all else, your Instagram. Last year, we were feeling some type of way about the Fifty Shades of Grey movie, and more importantly, Beyoncé hit us with a real nice remix of “Crazy in Love.” There might not be anything we love more than Queen B continuing to stun us year after year. She slays, we slay.

We told you in our last newsletter that we love love. We get that it’s complex and beautiful, at times elusive, and always rare. Love means a lot of different things to a lot of different people. Valentine’s Day also means a lot of different things to a lot of different people. For us, one thing has remained as consistent as the messages on conversation hearts: V-Day is not just a celebration of romantic love, but of all the kinds of love you have in your life.

Role Models: In some cases, it’s your parents, and other times, it’s just the person you look up to the most. Emily once said: “Role models are for lame people.” She probably wouldn’t have said that if she had a good role model.

Best friends: Truth is, they are the best of the best. The cream of the crop. Not just the cherry on top, they’re the whole sundae. They’re the friends you don’t mind having on your “Find a Friend” app. You know who they are; they’re the ones you’d never bail on in a group chat.

Friends: What’s that saying? One is silver and the other’s gold? Sure, sure. Regular friends are people, too. After all, everyone needs a Jonathan Cheban to their Kim K.

Work wife: She’ll talk about boys with you in the bathroom (Conference Room B), and she’ll go with you on all your stupid midday errands. She’s also the person you eat the most food with, and that’s really all that matters after all. Like we always say (in unison), “The fastest way to a coworker’s heart is through her bottomless stomach.”

The local grocer who stays open ‘til 1am: Speaking of food, this is your lifesaver. He’s there for you when no one else is. He’s the Wilson to your hairy Chuck Noland.

Siblings: Love ‘em or hate ‘em, they’re your blood. They’ll help you bury the body, no questions asked. They’re the only ones you spent Sunday mornings watching music videos with, the ones who got you drunk for the first time, the ones who keep you grounded. Whether you’re the Bella or the Gigi, YOU will always shine if you stand together. Life. Liberty. Fraternity.

The internet: Sometimes it’s the worst, but at its best, it’s a place for so much joy and creativity (see: “Hotline Bling” memes).

Historical presidents: Washington, Lincoln --- we have these geezers to thank for a three-day weekend. And supplying us with the building blocks of our freedom or whatever.

“Channing Tatum in a tux” Google image searches: This one feels like it speaks for itself. Like Chan’s body.

Julianne Moore: She is our queen forever and always.

Point is, we all have so much love in our lives --- real and deep and otherwise --- and it’s nice to recognize and celebrate it this month. Maybe your great love is your S.O.; maybe it’s the complete first season of “Californication.” Love is whatever makes you feel like your best self, flaws and all.

Sometimes, nothing makes us feel quite as good as reading a great book. Here are three we’re looking forward to cracking open this weekend:

Last week the trailer for the movie adaptation of ME BEFORE YOU (in theaters June 3rd) was released and had us all pretty emotional at the office as we viewed it. We cannot wait for the movie to hit theaters in June, so in anticipation of that we’re definitely reading the Jojo Moyes bestseller this weekend. How timely! In case you’re not one of the millions who’ve already read and cried over it, it’s the story of Louisa Clark, an unmotivated young woman, whose whole life changes --- for better and for worse --- when she takes on the job of caretaker to moody quadriplegic Will Traynor. If you happen to be in a book group, check out our “What’s Your Book Group Reading This Month?” contest over on ReadingGroupGuides.com where we’re giving three groups the chance to win 12 copies.

MISSING PIECES by Heather Gudenkauf is the story of Sarah Quinlan and her husband, Jack, who has been haunted for decades by the untimely death of his mother when he was just a teenager. The case rocked the small farm town of Penny Gate, Iowa, where Jack was raised, and for years Jack avoided returning home. But when his beloved aunt Julia is in an accident, Jack and Sarah are forced to confront the past that they have long evaded. Caught in a flurry of unanswered questions, Sarah dives deep into the puzzling rabbit hole of Jack's past. But the farther in she climbs, the harder it is for her to get out. And soon she is faced with a deadly truth she may not be prepared for.

In GIRL THROUGH GLASS by Sari Wilson, it’s the summer of 1977, and 11-year-old Mira is an aspiring ballerina whose mentor is 47-year-old Maurice DuPont. As she ascends higher in the ballet world, her relationship with Maurice intensifies, sparking unexpected desires that will upend both their lives. In the present day, Kate, a professor of dance, embarks on a risky affair with a student that threatens to obliterate her career and capsize the new life she has painstakingly created for her reinvented self. When she receives a letter from a man she has long thought dead, Kate is hurled back into the dramas of a past she thought she had left behind.
