Love 'Em or Leave 'Em

Like death, taxes and Nicholas Sparks movies with a mid-February release date, you can count on the same thing happening this time every year. You see the signs long before it actually happens: in convenience stores suddenly filled with red and pink cards, in restaurants rolling out their prix fixe menus for two, in the streets strewn with pastel conversation hearts. The world turns into a wasteland of love --- like something straight out of George Miller’s nightmares. Even Tom Hardy can’t save us from this. You probably know it as Valentine’s Day.

We’ve said it once before, and we’ll keep saying it until you believe us: We love love. We love love like Harry Styles loves bananas. We love love like Tom Brady loves...um...winning. We love love like Kanye loves himself. We love love like Jacob Tremblay loves Star Wars. We even believe in love, or at least whatever Miley + Liam share. And even though we’re not crazy about love’s commercialization this time of year, we can’t complain when it means falling for so many great movies (and not-so-great).

Last year, we had The Longest Ride and 50 Shades of Grey; this year we have some more alternative options, like How to Be Single and Pride and Prejudice and Zombies. (Given the choice, we’ll skip The Choice.) We’re really excited for these fun new approaches to love stories, so we got to thinking about some of our favorite unconventional love stories from years past. So here’s the 4-1-1 on our tippity top 10, in no specific order.

Romeo + Juliet: People are saying The Revenant is Leo’s best performance, but we beg to differ. His beautiful ‘90s hair almost stole the show, but ultimately nothing beats Claire Danes’ cryface.

Brokeback Mountain: The tragic ending of the movie and the loss of Heath Ledger IRL still leave us reeling to this day.

True Romance: You’re so cool. You’re so cool. You’re so cool.

Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind: Everybody’s gotta learn sometime that this movie is one of the most surprising, bittersweet love stories out there. The conversation about whether Clementine is a Manic Pixie Dream Girl rages on, but our love for this movie is not up for debate.

Secretary: Before 50 Shades, this movie dominated the BDSM scene. Your mom came for James Spader and stayed for the quirky and tender romance.

Only Lovers Left Alive: Jim Jarmusch directing Tilda Swinton and Tom Hiddleston as a pair of undead lovers? We could watch this one over and over again for all eternity. Twilight for the cool set.

Annie Hall: The OG of unconventional love stories. We luuurve it, we loave it, we luff it forever.

Her: Think you love your smartphone now? Just wait ‘til the future, when it has ScarJo’s voice.

Edward Scissorhands: Love knows no bounds in this dark and beautiful story from one of Hollywood’s faves, Tim Burton.

Obvious Child: This is one of the great love stories of our generation. It really nails the messiness and inconvenience of modern love. Although there’s nothing messy or inconvenient about Jake Lacy.

If reading is your one true love, here are some books to fall for this month:

In YOUR HEART IS A MUSCLE THE SIZE OF A FIST by Sunil Yapa, young Victor sets out to sell as much marijuana as possible to the throng of WTO demonstrators determined to shut down the city. With the proceeds, he plans to buy a plane ticket and leave Seattle forever, but it quickly becomes clear that the history-making 50,000 anti-globalization protestors are testing the patience of the police, and what started out as a peaceful protest is threatening to erupt into violence. Over the course of one life-altering afternoon, the fates of seven people will change forever.

Meet the women in AMERICAN HOUSEWIFE: Stories by Helen Ellis. They wear lipstick, pearls and sunscreen, even when it's cloudy. They casserole. They pinwheel. They pump the salad spinner like it's a CPR dummy. And then they kill a party crasher, carefully stepping around the body to pull cookies out of the oven. Helen Ellis’ 12 stories take us from a haunted prewar Manhattan apartment building to the set of a rigged reality television show; from the unique initiation ritual of a book club to the getaway car of a pageant princess on the lam; from the gallery opening of a tinfoil artist to the fitting room of a legendary lingerie shop.

Gregg Hurwitz tells the story of Evan Smoak, a man with skills, resources, and a personal mission to help those with nowhere else to turn in ORPHAN X. Evan's also a man with a dangerous past. Chosen as a child, he was raised and trained as part of the off-the-books black box Orphan program, designed to create the perfect deniable intelligence assets --- i.e. assassins. He was Orphan X. Evan broke with the program, using everything he learned to disappear. Now, however, someone is on his tail and determined to eliminate him.

Speaking of books, our newest contributor and an aspiring graphic designer, Morgan Staub, shares with us his top five favorite book covers in "A Passing Glance: The Art of Judging Books by Their Covers." It's no doubt that he's got the eye as the roundup includes FAHRENHEIT 451 and THE CATCHER IN THE RYE, two of our faves. We say: sometimes it's mighty okay to judge a book by its cover.

Also on the blog, check out our latest #WCW, which includes books by literary ladies we're looking forward to reading this year. Some of the titles are new and others are ones that have been on our list for a while. Word on the street is that now is as good of a time as any! #sweet2016

Or sharing cookie dough with a loved one. Be safe out there, and --- like an Oscars acceptance speech --- remember to wrap it up when the music starts to play.
