Breaking Bed: What's Keeping 20Somethings Up At Night?

As 20Somethings, we are constantly making tough decisions. But come Sunday, September 29th, many of us will have to face what may be the toughest decision of the year so far: choosing between the series finale of “Breaking Bad” and the season three premiere of “Homeland” (and don’t even start on the DVR solution --- we’re on 20Something budgets over here). It seems like every 20Something we know is obsessed, and it got us wondering: What makes these shows so appealing to us? The short answer: The scripts are good, the celebrities are attractive and the plots make for really extensive next-day Internet reading.

The long answer: These two shows, along with many others like “Mad Men,” “True Blood,” “Game of Thrones,” and even “Catfish” (which we’re throwing in to cover all our bases, even the crappy ones [editorial note: no judgment]), have one thing in common --- they all deal in big ways with themes of identity. In all of them, the protagonist struggles with his/her identity as it evolves based on his/her changing needs and desires. Which is basically what being in your 20s is all about. We may not be drug lords, but we feel you, Walter White. We feel you.

Maybe we’re a little late to the party (fashionably), but now that we’re embarking on the second half of our 20s, we’re starting to realize that things are changing. It’s not just our bodies (and our new concern that we’re getting enough fiber and a full eight hours of sleep), our faces (flashback to Emily studying wrinkle creams in Duane Reade for a full 30 minutes [editorial note: suggestions welcome]), our bounce-back time the morning after a night of heavy partying. It’s like our whole emotional outlook is being recalibrated. Basically, we’re growing...up. But even though our early 20s seem like forever ago, we have to keep reminding ourselves that objects in mirror are closer than they appear (ten grownup points for driving jokes!).

Oh and for those of you reading who are still in college --- or in your early twenties --- this is a look at the future!

It also strikes us that the issue of identity is at the big throbbing…heart of erotica. Needless to say, we’ve been getting busy reading erotica. All. Night. Long. Our recent fave is Marata Eros, author of A TERRIBLE LOVE and the companion (wink wink) novel, A BRUTAL TENDERNESS --- both of which are currently featured on the site. 20SomethingReads got a tantalizing interview with the author that is certain to tickle your fancy. Eros gets to all the bases, complete with star-crossed lovers, undeniable sexual chemistry, violence, a psychotic step brother and enough secret identities even Shakespeare would be confused. In so many words, this series is the whole package --- and we’re having a hard time saying no. As Woody Allen so wisely put it, “I don’t know the question, but sex is definitely the answer.”

But that’s just the tip...of the iceberg. There are so many great books coming out this fall. We’re particularly excited about THE ROSIE PROJECT by Graeme Simsion, THE CONSTELLATION OF GENIUS by Kevin Jackson and the tastefully titled CANDY: A Century of Panic and Pleasure by Samira Kawash, not to mention DOCTOR SLEEP by Stephen King, DEXTER'S FINAL CUT by Jeff Lindsay and THE EDGE OF NORMAL by Carla Norton.

Still wondering what to read? Well, we have links to reviews of more than 40(!) books in this newsletter!

In the spirit of football season, clear eyes, full heart, can’t lose. And cool story, bro.

Oh, and in a spirit of victory of man over tech, the pages on our 20SomethingReads.com website are now rendering in a lot more quickly. We, like you, were getting old waiting to read the site as the servers were upgraded --- and we need NO help in that department! But now...they are FAST. So hop on over and do some reading!

We’re also available via social media, so feel free to direct message us on Facebook or Twitter if that’s more your scene. We look forward to hearing from you!
