LisaMarie
The Paris Daughter by Kristin Harmel

5
Paris 1839 time frame. Young mothers meet and become fast friends. There is a war approaching and neither woman suspects their lives will change in such a horrific way. Highly recommend.

Jeanne
The Twelve Dogs of Christmas by Susan Wiggs

5
THE TWELVE DOGS OF CHRISTMAS by Susan Wiggs is the perfect Christmas story. It’s about Brenda who is reeling from a bitter divorce and trying to find herself again as she shies away from the Christmas season and reluctantly goes on a road trip to deliver eleven rescue dogs to their new homes with the owner of Underdogs. They are also accompanied by Brenda’s beloved little furry companion Tim. When the van crashes, Adam rescues them all. It is a charming, heartwarming story about second chances, learning to open your heart again, love and eleven wonderful dogs who get their forever homes. Once I started reading, I couldn’t put it down and it’s one of those must-read Christmas season books. The author did a fantastic job.

Toni
The Happy Life of Isadora Bentley by Courtney Walsh

5
I loved this book! Isadora Bentley is such an iconic character, and I enjoyed getting to know her in this book. She's a researcher and, on her birthday, buys a magazine and reads an article called "31 Ways To Be Happy." She doesn't believe in these types of lists and she decides to debunk the article by following along with the list. You see, she is alone all the time. She has no friends and doesn't go anywhere besides work. Once she starts doing the steps on the list, her world starts opening up. She starts making friends, smiling more, going places and then she falls for a professor. There are so many great characters in this book, too, that made it even better. This book made me want to be a better person.

Jill
All the Sinners Bleed by S. A. Cosby

4
I enjoyed this book from start to finish. This is a southern crime thriller focusing on Titus, the first Black sheriff in Charon County, Virginia who embraces his job to serve and protect his community. Titus has to deal with a school shooting, serial killer, cult-like churches and violent neo-Confederate groups, as well as, his personal life issues. I like S. A. Crosby’s books taking place in the South and exploring the ways in which Southern history continues to influence contemporary life. This book deals with violence, torture, assault, murder, racism, hate crimes, and sexual abuse.

Kathy
The Oceans and the Stars by Mark Helprin

5
An exceptional read by a true wordsmith. One of the best books I've read in years. It is the story of a career Naval officer, an ocean battle, and a love story all wrapped up in an incredibly beautiful novel.

Peg
The Berry Pickers by Amanda Peters

2
Well written, the recollections of a child stolen from her family and the ramifications for her and her family. I felt the characters were a bit too distant feeling for the story to really resonate on an emotional level.

Darlene
The Half Moon by Mary Beth Keane

3
It was okay.

Nancy
Wine People by Michelle Wildgen

3
Wren and Thessaly (yes, that’s her name) are from very different backgrounds but meet each other as employees in a small, highly competitive, wine distribution company in NYC. Through the telling of their story, you’ll definitely learn a lot about wine, wine distribution, and people who drink too much wine!

Barbara
West With Giraffes by Lynda Rutledge

5
A really great book! It’s based on the true story of two giraffes who were shipped to the U.S. Their ship was hit by a hurricane but they survived. The trek across the U.S. was filled with adventures, told by a young boy who survived the Dust Bowl, which killed his family. He drove the truck and rig with the giraffes across the country to the San Diego Zoo along with an “Old Man” that was responsible for getting the giraffes to the zoo.

Elizabeth
The Exchange by John Grisham

5
Loved the follow up to Mitch McDeere.

Sharon
Annie, Between the States by L. M. Elliot

4
The author not only told about the Civil War battles in Virginia, but she also brought out how the ordinary citizens suffered because of the war. So much was stolen from homes, like their supply of food but also their horses and cattle.

Francine
End of Watch by Stephen King

4
The third book in the Holly Gibney series. It’s interesting to watch Holly grow into a strong, independent person.

Jean
The Christmas Appeal by Janice Hallett

5
When a body comes tumbling out of the centerpiece of the Christmas presentation of Jack and the Beanstalk, it becomes a comedy of errors. The story is told through emails and phone conversations filled with gossip, jealousy and revenge as the village’s players prepare. This is a quick read that is guaranteed to have you laughing.

Sybil
The Heart Mender by Andy Andrews

5
Very interesting story.

Sharon
Tom Lake by Ann Patchett

5
Absolutely loved this book, great characters, great storyline - a real feel good book.

Alice
The Maid by Nita Prose

5
My book club is reading it for January. Several of us have already read it and thoroughly enjoyed it. I am anxious to read THE MYSTERY GUEST, a sequel to THE MAID!

MH
The Brass Verdict by Michael Connelly

4
I picked this book up in an old Reader’s Digest. Having just watched THE LINCOLN LAWYER series on Netflix, I decided to read it to see if the program followed the book. It was fairly true to the book except for the ending. It’s rare that I read the book after seeing the story, but I enjoyed this one. I actually like the Mickey Haller series better than the Bosch books. I think this is the first Haller book.

Vesna
The Manor House by Gilly Macmillan

4
Twists and turns throughout the mystery. This was my first read by this author and wont be my last. I know for sure what I'd do if I won the lottery! Interesting subject manner.

Rosa
The Storied Life of A .J. Fikry by Gabrielle Zevin

5
I recently read and loved TOMORROW, AND TOMORROW, AND TOMORROW and I felt compelled to read Zevin's earlier work. I loved this book just as much. A.J. Fikry is the owner of Island Books, the only bookstore on Alice Island near Boston. His life is turned upside down when Maya enters his life. This is a book about books (and short stories) for people who love books. I could not put it down. Now I must read ELSEWHERE.

Donna

Tara finds a partially buried body in her backyard and is the prime suspect of the murdered man. Ewan Valance and his family are wealthy and basically own the small town of Bloodson Bay and is feared and/or hated by most residents. Ewan and his sons are mean and criminals. Tara, Ginger and Sloane begin their own investigation as to what happened and why this body was buried on Tara’s property. As the investigation progresses they are exposed to serious danger. This is the 9th novel I’ve read by this author and this book is the 2nd of a series. I am looking forward to reading the rest of the series.

Donna
The Madwoman of Paris by Jennifer Cody Epstein

4
Paris, France, in the late 1800s: Women were at the mercy of men and it was common that the “men always win”. If a woman experiences any kind of breakdown (hysteria) or mental illness they could be placed in an asylum and probably never seen or heard of again. Jean-Martin Charcot, Pioneer of Brain-Related Maladies and World-Renowned Hysteria Expert, was conducting experiments on women who could be hypnotized in a effort to cure hysteria. This is a fictionalized story of true-to-life women who were placed in the asylum. I am astonished by the efforts and methods of the medical field to cure illnesses. This was an interesting, unsettling and informative book.

Donna
The Mother Next Door by Leah Mercer

3
Fiona, Alison and Jasmine have known each other since they were teenagers. They each carry a dark secret of an event that took place when they were in high school. They each receive a text message saying from Lou saying that she has the children and will return them when Fiona, Alison and Jasmine tell the truth. They have each confided secrets to Lou. What truth does she want them to tell? This is a suspenseful drama and the twists are well done.

Black Heart by Anna-Lou Weatherley

Dan Riley is a homicide detective who is investigating a gruesome apparent suicide. There are tell signs that lead him to believe it is actually a murder. A second suicide with similar clues convinces him that it is a serial killer and the next victim will be a baby. There is an urgency to find the killer. This is the first book I’ve read by this author and certainly won’t be the last. The story is a fast-paced page-turner and has good twists. Dan is very likable.

Donna

He grew up to be a writer and was approached by the witness protection agency to create histories for people in the program. In this process he began to research how to find his father. They have been living beyond their means for some time and now their world has been turned upside down. Brenda has never worked and the daughters are preparing for college. This novel is a story of a dysfunctional family and their attempts to survive their new life.

Donna
The Guest Book by Sarah Blake

3
This is a lengthy novel about three generations of a family that owned an island in Maine with a stately home where the families spent their summer months. The book starts in 1935 when the “island” was purchased. During that time, the men ran the businesses and the women were arm adornments always being proper and not outspoken. All is well with the families until the one time a family member invited a Jew and a Black man to visit for a weekend picnic. This story is about privilege, sexism, anti-semantic and racism.

Ina
Absolution by Alice McDermott

5
Alice McDermott beautifully evokes a story about the relationships between women, and the consequences of their decisions and actions, in Vietnam. Beautifully-written characters. I am loving trying to better understand the Vietnam era from a women’s perspective and perhaps shed more light on my husband’s trauma there. I just finished LEAGUE OF WIVES (excellent non-fiction) and am looking forward to Kristin Hannah’s THE WOMEN.

Sheree
Christmas Presents by Lisa Unger

3
This book was a little creepy - about a serial killer. It kept me reading, but when I think of Christmas I don't usually think of dark things, which this book was.

Rochelle
The Edge by David Baldacci

5
I am a big fan of David Baldacci having read most of his books. He always amazes me with his considerable knowledge and ability to be relevant.

Chris
The Night Tiger by Yangsze Choo

5
A wonderful novel, a love story, a mystery, set in Malaya. Strongly recommend this one for solitary or book club reading; lots of opportunities for discussion. Might make an interesting on-screen adaption.

Rebecca
A Fever in the Heartland by Timothy Egan

4
This is a frightening book of fact...the willingness of the United States population to follow a single leader into the darkness of hatred and violence. I could not help but to relate it to the issues facing our nation at this turning point of history.

Linda
Lessons in Chemistry by Bonnie Garmus

5
My favorite kind of book or movie has contrasts of humor and sadness - score! The story happens in the 1950s and 1960s when most men treated women as inferior and took advantage of them. Elizabeth is an oddball who is tactless. She is passionate about chemistry research but has to do a cooking show when she unfairly loses her job. The cooking part is the funniest and has references to that era like "burping" the lid on Tupperware. A fun read with some heavy messages, too.

Beverlee
Saving Emma by Allen Eskens

5
I love what this Minnesota author has written!! There are two tales in this book and each one is personal, real and suspenseful! A truly "can't wait til the end" book!

Susan
Strange Sally Diamond by Liz Nugent

5
Eerie, sad, complex. Wonderfully developed tragic characters which are all too believable in today's world. I'll have to look for other books by this author.

Jonell
Death Comes to Marlow by Robert Thorogood

4
Very entertaining! I listed to it on audio and the voice performance was fantastic. This book has a great sense of humor to go along with a wonderful mystery. I felt like I was in the English countryside enjoying a lovely cup of tea and an engaging story.

Pam
The Leftover Woman by Jean Kwok

5
This is a powerful and totally immersive novel about two women (a poor immigrant and a powerful woman of wealth) who both claim rights to the same child. I felt myself rooting for both women in this heartfelt and sometimes wrenching examination of motherhood.

Pam
The River We Remember by William Kent Krueger

5
1958: Jewel, Minnesota. The despicable Jimmy Quinn is dead. Was it an accident? A suicide? A murder? People in this small community are all too ready to believe he was murdered by a Native American war vet who recently returned with a Japanese wife. I think this stand-alone mystery is Kent Krueger's best novel yet!

Eileen
The Armor of Light by Ken Follett

4
Although I love Follett's books in this series, I found this one a little too long. Too much about the weaving process to hold my interest. Overall a good story, but could have been shorter.

Elizabeth
Romantic Comedy by Curtis Sittenfeld

5
I wasn't sure I would like this book as romances are not normally my thing. But this book was smart and funny and just a delight to read (and listen to.) It follows a writer for a takeoff of Saturday Night Live called the Night Owls and her relationship with a famous pop singer. She espouses a rule that though an ordinary man can date a hot woman, the opposite is never true - a hot man never dates an ordinary woman. Sittenfeld explores this concept in ways both humorous and interesting. I look forward to reading more of her books.

Shelley
Mrs. Plansky's Revenge by Spencer Quinn

4
Entertaining story about an active senior citizen who plots to regain her wealth and her self-worth. The book moved very quickly and while it was highly improbable in parts, it made me smile and root for Mrs. Plansky's success.

Donna
West With Giraffes by Lynda Rutledge

5
A young boy leaves his farm life in Texas during the dust bowl in the 1930s and goes to New York trying to find a better life. A ship pulls in carrying two giraffes barely alive. He helps drive the rigged up truck with the giraffes from NY to the San Diego Zoo, encountering many eccentric characters along the way. I felt las if I traveled the whole way with them. Great read!

Nancy
The Manor House by Gilly Macmillan

2
Way too confusing, who is who, why is one character so very easily manipulated? The only innocent is the dead guy.

Rachel
Death Descends on Saturn Villa by M. R. C Kasasian

4
Third in a series and now I have to go back and read the first two. Intriguing mystery, imperious detective along the lines of Sherlock Holmes. His Dr. Watson is his 21-year-old goddaughter. There is comic relief in the form of his maid.

Nancy
Shark Heart by Emily Habeck

2
This book has gotten some good press, but not from me. Talk about jumping the shark...you have to take a big leap of faith. One main character is turning into a shark. Others are turning into all kinds of creatures. There's presumably a lot of symbolism, but I didn't get it. We're doing this book for my book club in a couple of weeks, so I may have a different opinion after I get my club mates' input, but I did not like the story at all.

S
A Flicker in the Dark by Stacy Willingham

5
A terrific thriller. Years after Chloe Davis's life was changed by a serial killer, a series of copycat murders turns it upside down again. My book club unanimously rated it 5 stars!

Anne Marie
The Thursday Murder Club by Richard Osman

5
Witty with twists and turns that kept me guessing until the very end. Already ordered the other books!

Anne
The White Hare by Jane Johnson

5
Captivating, intriguing and enthralling historical. Well written with vivid descriptions, and wonderful character portrayal.

Cathy
The Connellys of County Down by Tracey Lange

4
This is a contemporary family drama. Don't let the title fool you. It doesn't take place in Ireland. There are several twists and turns and lots of secrets. It was an enjoyable and easy read.

Norene
The Wonder of It All by Barbara Taylor Bradford

4
A beautiful book, can't wait to read her next one.

Tessa
Nemesis by Agatha Christie

3
Miss Marple is up to her usual tricks. She is a keen observer and an astute judge of character. She fully understands that people underestimate her – or even completely ignore her. She is only an old woman, after all. Ha!

Richard N B
Shadow Prey by John Sandford

3
Book Two in the Lucas Davenport series went a bit off the rails. Sandford wanted to include a social justice message, and the result was a disappointment. The message wasn’t all that clear or informative; the thriller plot was frequently derailed by the message. An okay thriller, but not his best effort.

Paula
Remarkably Bright Creatures by Shelby Van Pelt

5
Wonderful characters. Excellent writing. Loved how the author connected all of the characters by the end of the story. Would and will recommend this lovely book.

Rose
Broadway Butterfly by Sara DiVello

3
I was looking forward to reading this book for a while, ever since I heard Sara DiVello talk about how she became interested in the story. However, it didn't live up to my expectations. Although it was interesting, I thought it dragged at times, and the ending left me with more questions than answers. I did enjoy the author's notes at the end and the info on all the people. When Ella Bradford comes to Dot King's apartment one morning to find her employer dead, she is distraught. She contacts the police, but they botch the investigation, and then later cover up the murder. Julia Harpman, a newspaper writer, chases the story and refuses to let it die. She attacks the story and uncovers more details than expected. Left questions open.

Rose
The Housemaid's Secret by Freida McFadden

4
Wow! This book delivers twist after twist! Millie is dating Brock, a respectable young lawyer, however, the spark isn't there on her end. She still thinks about Enzo, who had to return to Italy to care for his mother. After losing her job with Amber, she takes a job with the Garricks. Douglas is demanding of Millie, asking her to cook meals and shop for unique items. However, he keeps his wife, Wendy, behind closed doors. Millie believes that Doug is hiding something, and since Millie tries to help people, especially women in bad situations, she can't ignore this. As she helps Wendy, something goes wrong, and now Millie is in great danger. You won't see all the twists this book takes!

Cecilia
My Name is Barbra by Barbra Streisand

5
An autobiography you won’t be able to put down.

Teresa
Amazing Grace Adams by Fran Littlewood

4
Wife and mother Grace encounters failing marriage plus teen daughter. Probably the worst perimenopause I’ve ever heard of, but for any woman who’s been through it, there are probably more than a few familiar symptoms. This mom and (soon-to-be-ex) wife has them all. I loved that she’s a linguist and true lover of words. (When an expected outcome comes true, it is described as being like the exquisiteness of a regular verb.). A book women can identify with.

Carol
The French House by Don Wallace

3
A long ramble of a couple’s remodeling a home in France while living in America. Interesting. For some reason I kept reading. The couple’s lives had so many downs not clearly tied to the house. Odd book.

Dawn
The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho

4
This book was chosen for my book club due to it being the 20th anniversary. It was the first time I have read it. It was worth the read and very thought-provoking. I look forward to discussing the book soon.

Richard N B
The Innocent by Harlan Coben

3
Matt Hunter’s an ex-con working as a paralegal and making a go of it. He always maintained that the fight that led to his conviction for murder was really self-defense. Now a puzzling set of occurrences have the police suspecting Matt of another murder (or two). Coben knows how to craft a fast-paced thriller that kept me turning pages, though I nearly gave up in the first third, the plot was so convoluted.

Jeanne
The Intern by Michele Campbell

3
After reading THE INTERN I’m cannot help but wonder if corruption on this level could really be happening within our court system.

Jana
The River We Remember by William Kent Krueger

5
Absolutely loved this book. First book of this author and can't wait to read more, so beautifully written!

Muriel
The Little Liar by Mitch Albom

5
Albom has an interesting way of telling the story of Nico, Sebastian, and Fanny by using TRUTH as the narrator. This is a sad story of many deceptions throughout and the pain caused to many people. Nico was an exceptionally good and honest little boy whose life and the lives of many were changed by a horrible lie a despicable Nazi officer, Udo Graf, convinced Nico to tell. The book chronicles the effect this lie had on Nico throughout his life and the hatred it caused his brother Sebastian to have for him. The book depicts the horrors inflicted upon the Greek Jews as they are put into concentration camps. It was horrifying then and still today as many are unwilling to accept those whose culture, beliefs, or skin color are different.

Linda
The Boys by Ron and Clint Howard

4
Very interesting biography on the lives of Ron and Clint Howard, and the impact of their parents on their lives as child actors. Our book club had an outstanding discussion and we definitely recommend this book.

PJ
Nice Guys Finish Dead by William.W. Johnstone and J. A. Johnstone

5
I absolutely loved Casey and Eli. They are the Robin Hood of the West!!!! The whole story really moved along nicely and the imagery makes you think you're riding right along with them on their adventures. Are they really just two cattlemen trying to make a living with their cattle or do they have alter egos? I highly recommend this book and others by this author. I believe this book may be part of a series, but even if it is not it read very well alone.

Jill
The Reckoning by John Grisham

4
Another well-told story by Grisham. Pete Banning of Clanton, MI (a setting Grisham returns to in several of his books), has been arrested for the murder of Dexter Bell, a prominent local Methodist minister, and says he has nothing to say to help his defense. Grisham presents an overview of his life - a cotton farmer who marries, has two children, serves in WWII and experiences the trauma of the Bataan Death March, and of what happens after he comes home. His wife is mentally ill and he sequesters her in an institution for years. The now-grown kids have to piece together what brought Pete to this point. A surprise twist at the end brings it all together and I didn't see it coming. A few parts dragged a bit, hence the 4-star rating.

Abby
Maame by Jessica George

3
An interesting book about a twenty-something Ghanian woman living in London. Maddie has become the caretaker of sorts for her family - a father with medical issues, a mother who spends most of her time in Ghana and a brother who is "too busy" for family issues. When Maddie's mother comes to London for an extended stay, Maddie has the opportunity to move out of the family home and start her adult life with bumps along the way. I liked the story but was not as invested in the characters as I would have liked to have been.

Sandra
The Drowning Kind by Jennifer McMahon

5
Very unusual book. Goes from the past to the present in an easy to read way. Wasn't expecting the ending!

Laura
The Librarianist by Patrick deWitt

3
I enjoyed this book about a 71-year-old librarian introvert who finds himself volunteering at an older folks home/daycare. In addition to the colorful characters of the present, there are many characters in the stories told from Bob's past.

Catherine
The Spy Coast by Tess Gerritsen

4
I found it enjoyable. Found the settings intriguing.

Rose
The Collected Regrets of Clover by Mikki Brammer

4
This is a story about a young woman who is a death doula. Clover helps people transition from this life into death, preparing them. When they voice their regrets, she collects them in a series of journals, and later acts on them, to alleviate the regret from those who are died. Sebastian hires Clover to care for his ailing grandmother. Originally, she is unable to tell Claudia the reason she is visiting and instead Clover asks Claudia about her life as a photojournalist. When Clover shows Claudia and old picture of Hugo, Claudia reveals her regret, which was not marrying Hugo. Clover hopes to find Hugo before Claudia dies to give them a chance to connect 60 years later. So touching and beautiful.

Pam
Crow Mary by Kathleen Grissom

3
A book club choice, this one served as a catalyst for discussion about Native American history and traditions. The story itself moves very slowly with much description and repetition. It's inspiring in that Crow Mary is a smart, strong character who perseveres despite the harsh realities of the times.

Liz
What Happened to the Bennetts by Lisa Scottoline

4
The Bennetts are driving home when they realize they are being followed. When the car forces them to pull over, Jason, the father, believes it is a carjacking. When everyone gets out of both cars, things go horribly wrong. Shots are fired. The nightmare begins. There are many twists and turns to this story, sometimes a bit too much, which makes the story unbelievable.

Mary
The Incredible Winston Browne by Sean Dietrich

5
A heartwarming story about a small town sheriff (Winston Browne) who has everyone's back and the people in his life who become his unofficial family. There is action, humor, suspense and sadness tucked inside this literary gem by "Sean of the South". I will definitely look for more of his books.

Agnes
Death Valley by Melissa Broder

4
The protagonist of this novel is dealing with a lot — her father is in the hospital ICU and her husband has a mysterious chronic illness. Overwhelmed, she escapes by herself to the California desert to sort things out, including the novel she’s working on. While there, a receptionist at the Best Western draws her a map to a nearby hiking trail that she might like. She sets out, totally unprepared for this journey, but isn’t that just like life? This is one of the most interesting novels I’ve ever read about grief and grieving. The author’s imagination and humor fully engage the reader, while imparting profound lessons on life. The reading experience for me was spot-on. I felt she was right there with me on my own grief journey.

Becky
The Last Devil to Die by Richard Osman

5
How can a book about four murders be a tender love story? And yet, THE LAST DEVIL TO DIE is a tender love story. Our four senior sleuths, Elizabeth, Joyce, Ron and Ibrahim are caught up in a drug war, an art forgery, a “love for money” fraud and the murder of one of Stephen’s friends along with three other murders. Osman, who has written three other novels starring the four members of the Thursday Murder Club, is back again with a delightful, charming and intriguing mystery. His characters are true to form and fine companions for a chill autumn evening or two with a hot cup of tea. Who will be the “last devil to die” and, therefore, the murderer will keep you guessing to the last pages.

Rose
Blood Sisters by Vanessa Lillie

4
This book is a bit different than the other Vanessa Lillie books I have read. In this novel, she examines the plight of Native Americans and how they have been pushed off their land and the drug and alcohol addictions they face. Additionally, she adds in murder! Years earlier, Syd, Emma Lou, and Luna became blood sisters. One night, the devil came to kill them. Fighting back, only sisters Syd and Emma Lou made it out. Syd left OK and moved, becoming an archaeologist, examining graves of missing women. Now, she is called back to OK, where a skeleton has been discovered with her badge in the skeleton's mouth. When she returns, she finds that Emma Lou is missing. Syd believes the worst, that Emma Lou is using again. Surprising and sad.

The Wishing Bridge by Viola Shipman

4
A sweet Christmas story, with a lot of nostalgia. (Plus a bonus novella-Christmas Angels!) Henrietta Wegner (Henri) is on the verge of losing her job and desperately says she will get her parents to sell their Christmas store to the large corporation. Now, she has to convince her parents it is the right time to sell. Her parents are surprised that she returns for Christmas, and her brother suspects that something is up. Henri also reconnects with her old friends and her old flame. As she goes forward with her plan, she starts to wonder if it is the right thing, if she is being true to her heart. The story gives all the good Christmas vibes!

Lucy by the Sea by Elizabeth Strout

4
A book about a family's experiences during the Covid pandemic. Brought back lots of memories of a time I never want to go through again. I think it would make a nice book for a book club.

The North Woods by Daniel Mason

4
This was a new way to read about a single area. Mason covers the many generations of people living here beautifully.

Cheryl
The Brightest Star by Gail Tsukiyama

5
Anna May Wong was the first Chinese American movie star. Most folks today may not know her story and only know she has been commemorated on a new series of quarters honoring female role models. This historical novel shares Wong’s life appearing in silent movies to her work in several major films. Unfortunately, she lost the lead role in "The Good Earth" because a Chinese actress couldn’t kiss/be married onscreen to a White actor. Sadly, she passed away just as her career was reviving.

Shotgun Lovesongs by Nickolas Butler

Good, fast-moving.

Jill
The Witching Tide by Margaret Meyer

4
A haunting debut read inspired by the events of the East Anglian witch hunt of 1645-7. Margaret Meyer dedicates her book to the more than 100 innocent women who lost their lives. Martha, a mute midwife, finds herself caught up in the rounding up of women from her town that are supposedly witches. If a woman didn’t want the advances made to her by a man, he could spread around lies and say she is a witch. If a baby died of complications from birth, they could say the midwife is a witch. The witch hunter would come to purge cities of sickness and contagions that the devil’s brides bring forth. Women were assigned by the witch man to examine other women accused of being a witch.

Laurie
The Little Liar by Mitch Albom

5
Five big stars to author Mitch Albom again, (one of Michigan’s most talented!) I have read so many fictional historical novels recently, but this family saga is a unique Holocaust story, Book clubs will find many themes for spirited discussion. Don’t miss THE LITTLE LIAR!

Cynthia
Dreamland by Nicholas Sparks

4
This novel presents two parallel storylines which seem to serve as counterpoints to one another. One is a warm, romantic story of a lonely young man who unexpectedly falls in love with a woman he meets while on vacation - a genre which I tend to associate with Nicholas Sparks' other works. The other follows a woman who is escaping an abusive marriage, desperate to protect her son and herself from being found by a husband who has many resources for tracking her due to his government job. As I read the book, I kept wondering how these two stories were going to intersect, as there seemed to be no plausible way for the characters to meet. The answer was a total surprise, one I never suspected!

Betty
Hopes and Fears by Peter Turnbull

4
A very good, straight up and down, police procedural.

MH
Two Little Girls in Blue by Mary Higgins Clark

4
I enjoyed this book, which featured kidnapped twins. My mother was a twin; I found the connection between the young twins in the book fascinating. Although I haven’t seen twins who communicated telepathically, it’s obvious that twins have a special connection. Also, the reader knows that any of Mary Higgins Clark’s novels will end happily - for the good guys.

Gina
Bloodlines by Nelson and Alex DeMille

2
I am a devoted Nelson DeMille reader but this is a complicated tale without much witty commentary, which distinguish his mysteries.

Debbie
Cat Among the Pigeons by Agatha Christie

3
Mystery and intrigue in THE CAT AMONG THE PIDGEONS. Agatha Christie introduces a bevy of teachers and female students in this foray into multiple deaths. The secret starts in a kingdom in the Middle East where Prince Ali Yusug asks his friend to smuggle priceless jewels out of the country during a revolution. The reader knows where the jewels have been hidden, but the killers keep searching. The chase for the jewels centers on an private girl’s school in England. One of the students, Julia Upjohn, jumps into the search for the jewels and the clues on the murders. Hercule Poirot enters the investigation very late. With the help of Julia, Hercule solves the case. An interesting jump into schools, jewels, the wealthy, and the Middle East.

Debbie
The Last Devil to Die by Richard Osman

3
Richard Osman portrays elderly individuals with understanding and clarity and humor. These are not disposable people, but valid members of society. My favorite character remains Joyce, the diary writer who ties up all loose ends. Many topics enter the story: love scams for lonely individuals and euthanasia. A past homosexual relationship surfaces and the burial of the young man’s ashes. A priceless box containing drugs was delivered to Kuldesh Sharma for him to hold until a courier retrieves. But Kuldesh hides the box, and he is killed. Now begins the race to find the box and find the killer. The box, an ancient artifact, reigns as the more priceless item. The box and drugs will be recovered, but the ending story is unexpected.

A Life Without Water by Marci Bolden

4
This book was a very human story about grief, loss, pain, hope and forgiveness. Carol Denman and her ex-husband John are on a road trip both physically and metaphorically. They take an emotional and long overdue trip around the country while trying to heal old wounds. I enjoyed this book so much and I can't wait to start on the next book, LIFE WITHOUT FLOWERS.

Kimberley
Trust by Hernan Diaz

4
This novel crisscrosses decades as it follows the descendants of billionaires and the mystic surrounding their survival and boundless wealth during recessions, wars and the crash of 1929. The story reveals the emotional, physical and social cost of being the richest during times of great suffering.

Natalie
The Boys by Ron Howard and Clint Howard

4
A wonderful book about someone you thought you knew all about. There’s more to Ron than just being Opie Taylor or Richie Cunningham. Even more than just being the great director that he is. I strongly recommend this one and you’ll love him even more.

Wanda
First Lie Wins by Ashley Elston

One Christmas Morning by Rachel Greenlaw

4
Eva's life was upended on Christmas three years earlier, and she can't get past it. Her marriage to the love of her life, James, is crumbling, and she pours herself into her work. Her friends feel neglected, as does her husband. She doesn't know how to handle her crushing grief. Then one Christmas morning, she wakes up over and over again in another's body, allowing her to take a look at her life and how her single-mindedness and her grief has consumed her. She begins to understand and re-evaluate things. Hopefully, this Christmas will finally allow Eva to grow and overcome her grief and move on. A heartbreaking, but ultimately uplifting, Christmas story.

The Novelist from Berlin by V. S. Alexander

5
I thoroughly enjoyed this book and the life adventures of the main character. From the minute I picked the book up I was enthralled. I recommend this book highly.

Beth
Hello Beautiful by Ann Napolitano

4
This is kind of a modern day LITTLE WOMEN. Since LITTLE WOMEN is my favorite book, I had to read it. There are some parallels - the book follows four sisters, but it's different enough that I didn't guess who Beth was for a long time. It takes place in the Pilsen neighborhood of Chicago and New York starting in the early 80s through 2008. I wanted to strangle some of the characters for the big wrong-headed life decisions they made. But though it is not a perfect fit with my beloved LITTLE WOMEN, Napolitano does capture the love and heartache of a close family well.

Rocky
Yes Please by Amy Poehler

4
I enjoyed this book far more than I had expected. An autobiography of Miss Poehler, a history of Second City and other comedy "schools" in the United States, and some back story of Saturday Night Live make this a very interesting read. Ms. Poehler writes about the difficult work involved in establishing a career in comedy for a woman as well as her work establishing The Upright Citizen's Brigade. The UCB has been in existence a lot longer than I had realized and does a huge amount of work helping men AND women in their acting and comedy work.

Sonia
The Maid by Nita Prose

4
The book lived up to its hype. An engaging main character and a good mystery as well.

Linda
A Fine Romance, Falling in Love with the English Countryside by Susan Branch

4
Susan Branch is an artist who handwrites and illustrates her books in gorgeous watercolor pictures and quotes. Her husband and she celebrated their 25th anniversary by crossing "the pond" on the Queen Elizabeth II and then touring mostly small country towns. A lot of their stops were to see the homes and gardens of English authors! I loved being an "arm chair traveler" thanks to Ms. Branch.

Beth
Veil of Doubt by Sharon Virts

5
VEIL OF DOUBT Is exceptional historical fiction. Plus, it is mostly true. Emily Lloyd was a wife and mother of four children until, one by one, they died. The townsfolk think Mrs. Lloyd killed all five of them. She is taken to jail. Powell Harrison is a well-known lawyer in town. He, along with two other lawyers, defends Mrs. Lloyd. At first they want to declare her innocent by reason of insanity. Eventually, though, they defend her as simply innocent. Throughout the story is the mystery of Lara and Lilith. They are the two women who live in the "twin home" next to Mrs. Lloyd. (I imagine this is what we call a duplex nowadays.) Harrison keeps trying in vane to speak with them.

The Hotel by Emily Shiner

5
Abby knew her husband lied to her but she never knew what he was hiding. Or did she? Oh, the tension in this book, and you won’t be able to decide which character is the most cunning. A new author to me - LOVED the book!!

ELIZABETH
The Wife in the Photo by Emily Shiner

5
Evan the chief of police is nervous about what his daughter, Jessica, knows. There are lots of shady, lying characters in this fast-paced, twisty, really good book with a lot of surprises and a book you won’t want to put down.

Santa Cruise by Fern Michaels

4
This is a fun novel, perfect for the holiday season. It follows a close-knit group of women who reunite at their class party. The laddies decide to meet up on a singles’ cruise over the Christmas holidays. Each woman has her story and it’s warming to see how they all come together to make real life changes with a beautiful Caribbean backdrop. It’s a lovely story.

Next Door Nemesis by Alexa Martin

4
Collins and Nate were best friends growing up. But, then Nate ghosted her. She has never forgiven him and she hates him. Now, Collins have moved back to Ohio after a failed relationship in CA, her ex stole her story/script and sold it as his own. Collins had an epic meltdown that was captured on video. Now in OH, Nate and Collins have a run in over the community HOA. Both decide to run for president, Collins mainly to get on Nate's nerves. The HOA aspect was hilarious. I loved the sarcastic comments about HOAs & MLM schemes. Martin writes what we're all thinking! It's the tension between Collins and Nate and the lengths she takes to get under his skin is so over-the-top, you have to laugh. Once together their relationship ignites!

Anastasia
Magnolia Parks by Jessa Hastings

I loved this book so much! The characters will make you fall in love with them as well as the story. The drama, the emotion, the storyline is perfect! The toxic love story is so relatable to most young adults, it is perfect.

Anastasia
Normal People by Sally Rooney

3
Mixed feelings about this book. I loved it and did not like it all at once. I loved the characters but found the story too repetitive, but I think that was the whole point. I just feel she could have done more with the story.

Sean
Nowhere to Hide by Nell Pattison

3
Nell Pattison tells the story of a group of nature lovers and friends who gather for a special night in the woods that turns deadly. Each of the seven has a secret or two and maybe one was worth killing for. It was a decent little mystery but there were also quite a few problems. I thought the setting was odd. I don't think the author did a very good job of explaining the setting as it seems inconceivable at times. The timing was also odd. The characters were okay but too cliched at times. It did have me interested all the way to the end though. Overall, some serious flaws but entertaining enough.

Remarkably Bright Creatures by Shelby Van Pelt

4
Marcellus is a giant Pacific octopus that has been rescued and is now in an aquarium in Washington State. Tova is a widow who lost her only son many years ago and is the cleaning lady at the aquarium. The two of them form an unlikely friendship and create a bond that requires no words. Marcellus helps Tova get over the past and she gives Marcellus the end that he needs. Given the fact the some of the chapters are told in Marcellus’ “voice”, this is a very moving and readable book. Quite different from anything else I have read.

Small Things Like These by Claire Keegan

5
This was a perfect start to the Christmas reading season. A short novella that can be read in one sitting. Set in Ireland in the 80s. Thought-provoking and it really gave me all the Irish feels. The sense of place was strong and I really loved the main character. It was a book that lead me to dig into additional research of the Magdalene girls.

There is an instant attraction between them, but Rachel and Matt have a deal that she stays in the house, attends his events as his spouse, and she will get a payout after the election. The St. Ambrose School for Girls by Jessica Ward

4
This book was a super fast read for me. Sarah Taylor joins St. Ambrose as a sophomore, and she knows she will be an outcast. She wears shabby all black clothing. She is hiding a big secret - she tried to kill herself twice. Now she is on lithium, but she doesn't like taking it. Greta Stanhope is the official mean girl and will do anything to hurt Sarah. She also hurts Sarah's roommate, athlete Ellen "Strots" Strotsberry, who takes Sarah under her wing, telling her not to give Greta the satisfaction she craves. The married Hot RA, Nick is in Greta's sights, too. But Sarah hallucinates that he wants her. Eventually, tragedy strikes, and not just once. This is a sad and all too real thriller, showing how fragile teen girls egos can be.

If You Would Have Told Me: A Memoir by John Stamos

1
John Stamos’ memoir drags and does not present any interesting tidbits. His world revolves around alcohol, drugs and women. Then a small miracle arrives in the form of his current wife, Caitlin McHugh, and the birth of their son. Of course, John honors his mother throughout the story as the guiding light of his life. This book wasted my time.

Debbie
The White Lady by Jacqueline Winspear

3
Jacqueline Winspear writes enlightening stories of the war with the Maisie Dobbs and now Elinor White series. Each character stands tall as a strong and independent woman. Elinor speaks five languages and aids England in finding and stopping foreign spies. She also fights social injustice and England’s crime scene. What will Elinor do when an ex-lover seems to be involved in organized crime? It's an interesting novel, but Maisie Dobbs exceeds Elinor White in character.
