The Kalahari Typing School For Men by Alexander McCall Smith
Rating: 4 Stars
I always enjoy these light and friendly books. In this one, the assistant starts a new typing business for men and falls for a married man. Another Detective agency opens up in the area. Precious is busy helping a man make amends from his past, and a lady figure out if her husband is involved with another woman. The foster children have some minor problems to solve and the apprentices are still lazy and after girls. These are short and easy reads. I especially love the African setting of Botswana. I look forward to reading the next one, as well as starting another of McCall's series.

Winter's Bone by Daniel Woodrell
Rating: 5 Stars
Daniel Woodrell's latest Ozarks-centered novel is a modern-day adventure-quest story about Ree Dolly, a 16-year-old young woman who cares for her feeble-minded mother and her younger brothers while battling to save the family homestead after her father disappears. If she doesn't find him --- dead or alive --- she will lose the family home and they will be turned out on the land like dogs.
In WINTER'S BONE, meth cooks have replaced moonshiners in the close-lipped Ozarks, but their methods for dealing with outsiders, the law, and snitches remain.
Like the Ozarks' winter depicted by Woodrell, WINTER'S BONE is stark, intense, and at times, beautiful. While many of the characters are rough and unlikable, the story rings true.
This is a book I will remember for its sense of place and the characters Woodrell has painted so vividly with his words. Although it isn't the most flattering book about the Ozarks and some of its people, it is a beautifully written, memorable story.

Holiday Heat by Lynn LaFleur, Jan Springer and Katherine Kingston
Rating: 5 Stars
This was a fun holiday read about 3 sisters who find love at Christmas, thanks to their Grandmother and her magical candle lights. In all 3 stories, the characters were fun and likeable. The storylines were set in different locations, which made it interesting. This was a fast and "hot" read that you will want to read from start to finish.

This book allows one to imagine some of the events in the life of a young Jesus Christ. It includes voyages and walking trips, which highlight Joseph's carpentry work, as well as the daily life of the extended family and the loving care of Mary and Joseph for their family and relatives. As the story unfolds and Jesus matures, his nature emerges along with the events, both pleasant and dangerous, which influenced and molded the Holy Family during his brief lifetime. This worthwhile book provides a glimpse into the politics, adventures, and concerns of their daily life. What a wonderful way to prepare for the Christmas season!

From Doon With Death by Ruth Rendell
Rating: 2 Stars
It’s alright. Nothing special. A woman is murdered, and Wexford and Burden are trying to solve the case. It's set in a small town, so there are few suspects. The victim was a respectable and church-going woman, but secrets are uncovered and so are the skeletons in one’s closet. This is like Agatha, but not as good. I'm glad it was short.

Rain Fall by Barry Eisler
Rating: 4 Stars
This was pretty good. I enjoyed the information on Japan and its government and found it very Interesting. I think the author does an excellent job putting the fighting scenes into words. I felt like I could really see exactly what was happening.
The story is about an assassin, John Rain. His specialty is making death look like it was from natural causes as opposed to murder. His most recent assignment is to kill the Minister of Construction (Kawamura). He doesn’t know why he has been marked, and he doesn’t ask. He just does his job. In this case, Kawamura has a pace maker. John is able to manipulate the pace maker through a computer, but after he completes the job, John coincidentally meets Midori, Kawamura’s daughter, and he immediately falls for her. And THEN discovers who she is, and that she is in danger. The story takes off from there. This was a very unique suspense novel, and I am looking forward to reading the next one in the series.

Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close by Jonathan Safran Foer
Rating: 5 Stars
Quick, fictional read about 9-year-old boy searching to gain answers after his father is killed in the 9/11 WTC attacks. The book's main character, Oskar --- though not autistic --- was developed in such a way that he reminded me quite a lot of Christopher from Mark Haddon's book THE CURIOUS INCIDENT OF THE DOG IN THE NIGHTIME.
I'd give this book 5 stars!

Innocent Traitor by Alison Weir
Rating: 5 Stars
I have read every history book Ms. Weir has written and loved them. I therefore couldn't wait to read her first foray into fiction, and I was not disappointed. There is so little information left to us on Lady Jane Grey's life since history is written by the victors. Weir's choice to write a novel left her open to explore the myth and conjecture surrounding Grey's short but eventful life. Of course, as many know, the ending was not happy, but at least Weir depicts this young princess as an intelligent, learned woman who just wanted to be alone with her books.

Nineteen Minutes by Jodi Picoult
Rating: 4 Stars
I just read an arc of Jodi Picoult's new book NINETEEN MINUTES. Jodi has an uncanny way of writing about subjects that we would tend to shy away from, in this case a High School shooting much like Columbine. This will be a bestseller and I'm sure, a favorite of book clubs.

Lisey's Story by Stephen King
Rating: 5 Stars
Written from the point of view of "Little" Lisey Debusher Landon, widow of a best-selling novelist, Scott Landon, LISEY'S STORY is at times terrifying, but more often touching, thought-provoking, and enlightening.
LISEY'S (rhymes with Cee-Cee's) STORY is a love story that transcends death. Lisey Landon is faithful to her husband Scott's memory and his wishes, years after he dies, and Scott helps save Lisey after he's gone. He leaves clues (called bools) so she can deal with the academic bottom-feeders who want a piece of Scott's intellectual property to bolster their own reputations. Scott's bools, along with Lisey's courage and intellect, survive the wickedly wacko Jim Dooley, and Dooley's Incunk puppetmaster, Professor Woodbody, who has lost control of his puppet. Lisey's sisters, the Debusher girls, play a large part in this novel, and Amanda is the most endearing and enduring.
King's beautiful use of language, and his insight into true and everlasting love, surviving overwhelming grief, family bonds, the question of insanity, and the notion of where creativity comes from make this novel memorable for me.

The Godfather's Revenge by Mark Winegardner
Rating: 5 Stars
Winegardner is a worthy successor to Mario Puzo. Using many of the same characters, he follows the original storyline and fills in missing spaces between the seconds and third movies. THE GODFATHER'S REVENGE deals with the further machinations of Michael in his attempts to be recognized as a "legitimate" businessman. Although there are the obligatory scenes of mob violence, most of the book is about politics and family relationships. I hope that Mr. Winegardner chooses to continue the saga in the future.

The Mephisto Club by Tess Gerritsen
Rating: 4 Stars
I loved this book, and couldn't put it down. I wanted to curl up on a Saturday night with it instead of going out. The brutal and graphic murder scenes were hard to get through, but the suspense and interesting topics kept me reading. Strong female characters and compelling topics of religion were also assets to the book.
Sigrun Schulz
Grave Intent by Deborah LeBlanc
Rating: 4 Stars
I am anything but a fan of horror stories but had heard good things about the author. Still, I approached this book with trepidation. Was I in for a lot of mayhem and gore?
Yes to the former, but I'm thankful that it is definitely no to the latter. Only one scene borders on gory.
It begins with the death of a young Gypsy girl killed when her horse shies on her. The other important person is a greedy old man. From this point, a few disastrous days come for the old man's son and his family which could culminate in his granddaughter's death.
The story is very suspenseful and strange occurrences abound. The author describes the events almost clinically but you definitely get caught up in them. The puzzle is not completely solved and leaves room for the reader to think what each occurrence actually meant. But then, how can we understand the supernatural?

A corpse is discovered with all indications that she was the victim of The Dollmaker, even though Harry supposedly killed him four years earlier. Did Harry kill the wrong man, or is he being set up? The Meaning of Night: A Confession by Michael Cox
Rating: 3 Stars
This is the story of a man obsessed with obtaining his birthright --- a birthright no one else knows is his... not even his father.
This is an interesting confession of a revenge murder set in the 1800s. While interesting, it is a slow and at times tedious read. The author's attention to detail of the period is amazing, but also adds to the tediousness of the read.
If you like period books about obsession, this one is for you.

Misty Blue by Dyanne Davis
Rating: 5 Stars
MISTY BLUE was such a wonderful book. It had all the elements of a great romance --- conflict, romance, chemistry, and suspense. I loved following the story of Damien and Mia. I was rooting for them to make it to the altar. I'm glad they ended up getting married, despite all the obstacles and intrusions they faced. This was a wonderful book and I look foward to more books by this author. I highly recommend this book to romance readers who are looking for a book with more depth then your typical romance novel. Dyanne Davis is a name to remember. Keep her on your must-buy list!

Lisey's Story by Stephen King
Rating: 1 Stars
If there was a 0, I would have used it. The book sounded so good, but just reminded me of why I quit reading Stephen King. Years ago, I ate up everything he wrote, but he changed...
I thought, "OK, maybe it's just me," so I gave the book away and it was given back the next day. Then, I passed it to my mother and she also gave it back, saying it was unreadable. So what happened to the man who wrote CARRIE and all those other good books?

The Johnson Jinx by Vincent Armstrong
Rating: 4 Stars
In the book, one family does indeed seem to have more than its usual share of problems, which range from rape, alcoholism, drug addiction, pornography, and the family's latest scandal --- a murder charge. Frannie Johnson flees Detroit to escape the tarnish that was cast upon her family's name when her husband, William Johnson, leads a politically charged group similar to the Black Panthers. William is gunned down by the police in his attempt to make things better for the Black inhabitants of Detroit, instead of being hailed as a hero by the city's Black citizens. Due to the bad press that he receives, the family name is tarnished and he becomes vilified. Frannie packs her bags and flees Detroit to find a better life for her children. But despite all of her attempts to keep the family intact, problems prevail.
When her grandson Terrence is accused of murdering one of Atlanta's most prominent citizens --- the daughter of the mayor of Atlanta --- the family is once again tried by the press, and an over-zealous reporter seeking sensationalism starts a media frenzy. But throughout all of Frannie's problems, she stays mindful of the fact that God is in control, and not once does she lose her faith in God.
Reading this book was a very pleasant experience and I look forward to his next one.

Headwind by John J. Nance
Rating: 4 Stars
I found this book to be very engaging. The basic plot is that an ex-American President has an Interpol warrant issued against him by Peru for an operation that resulted in numerous women and children being killed. It opens in Rome with pilot Craig Dayton deciding to evade the authorities and try to seek a safe haven for the ex-President. Unfortunately, most countries that are within reach have ratified the applicable treaty and are compelled to arrest and hold the former chief executive should he land in their country. This novel is a jewel of a cat-and-mouse game, mixed in with daring legal manuevering. I definitely give this book two thumbs up.

I loved this book because it had me laughing each time I turned the page. I keept getting strange looks because I was laughing so hard. After a terrible marriage to a cheating husband, Lizabeth doesn't trust many men. Her goal is to take care of her two young sons and to become a Fairy (with wings!). She desperately needs money, but is having no luck finding a job... until she applies to be a carpenter. Matt takes one look at her and falls in love, hiring her even though she is not at all qualified. The other characters are the nightime flasher and her crazy 72-year-old Aunt Elsie. You Can't Win by Jack Black
Rating: 5 Stars
A highly overlooked classic piece of literature, YOU CAN'T WIN --- written in 1928 by Jack Black --- tells the story of a boy's life in the Depression with a father who feels incapable of raising a child after his wife dies. It is about a man who has grown into a world of petty crimes to get by. It brings you on the road with him and his friends, the first hobos. It is the story of a thief, a drug addict and gambler, a man who just cannot win. This autobiography reads like an exciting novel. The great William Burroughs has named it his favorite book and it is easy to see why. Impossible to put down, YOU CAN'T WIN is a trip into an uncensored view of America's past.

Spy by Ted Bell
Rating: 5 Stars
This is one of the best "spy" novels I've read in the past year or two.The events take place at several spots on the globe including the Amazon, Texas, England and the Mexican border. The author had me believing in the characters from those locations and descriptions of the locales. The plot and subplots are current with our times, involving the border between the USA and Mexico, jihadists, advanced weapons used in warfare, and the moral issues faced by our government. A great read!

After This by Alice McDermott
Rating: 4 Stars
This is about John and Mary Keane, their 4 children, and life in their Catholic community on Long Island. The four siblings are destined to experience the challenges and liberties of the 1960s. When I first started this book it was a little rough going, but about a third of the way through, I began to thoroughly enjoy it. When I got to the end and discovered what happened to Clare, I found myself thinking, "Of course, I should have seen this one coming!"

Anyone who read Carr's THE ALIENIST will love this book. It takes place about 20 years later in 1919 and has all the same characters in it. It has Carr's wonderful suspense and detail of this time in the early 20th Century of New York City.

Water for Elephants by Sara Gruen
Rating: 5 Stars
This is a wonderful book. It gives you some circus background, which you may find unpleasant, but you will not find uninteresting. But, the best thing about it might be the insight into how much even a 90 year old needs to live his life and not have his thoughts and experiences shuttled away as useless or as just a fantasy. It is a good book for anyone who has a friend or family member who is getting up in years.

Motor Mouth by Janet Evanovich
Rating: 4 Stars
I am not usually a reader of Chick Lit, but I decided to see what sort of writer Janet is, so I tried this one. I found it witty, and it had a wonderful, crazy plot.
Motor Mouth, a lady mechanic/racecar spotter finds herself in deep water when she uncovers a plot involving murder, kidnapping, and microchipped
racecars that seem to be controlled from someone on the sidelines. How can this be? Motor Mouth and her boyfriend decide to get to the bottom of all this, and it may well be the death of them both. This is a sassy, sexy, and funny read.

The Accidental Tourist by Anne Tyler
Rating: 4 Stars
Another good one by Anne Tyler. I really enjoyed this. This was published in the middle 80s, then made into a movie I never saw. It’s about Macon --- he and his wife Sarah, have just recently lost their son to a brutal but random crime. The tragedy takes a toll on their marriage and Sarah asks for a separation. Macon is a writer and travels all over the world as “The Accidental Tourist.” He writes travel guides for the working executive. After having some trouble with his dog, Edward, he seeks out Muriel, who is a dog trainer at a local vet. They become close and start dating. Tyler does a great job depicting Macon's odd character. He is loveable but has many idiosyncrasies. I really felt for him trying to deal with his life; or, actually not dealing with it and letting things just happen as they do. I really liked this book. I may rent the movie, because I am curious to see how William Hurt plays the part.

Rating: 5 Stars
This is the third in a series, and I must admit that I haven't read the other two. You don' t need to read them in order, but after reading this one, I think I will. Greg and Jill McKenzie have started their own public investigating office. They are a husband- and-wife team. When a young woman named Molly Saint comes to them looking for a background check on her husband, she then disappears. The deeper they dig into the investigation, the fear for Molly's life grows.

Rating: 4 Stars
WHEN SANTA FELL TO EARTH is a sweet whimsical tale of two kids, a dog, two angels, a young skinny Santa, an invisible reindeer, and several disgruntled elves. Santa padding his pockets from the materialism of Christmas!

This book started out really lame. I was not into it at all. From the middle to the end, it was a little better. I am not a big chick lit fan. This is the first Cruise book I have read, and I'm not sure if I would read another. This one was about Sophie and Amy, who come to Temptation, Ohio to make a movie. They make some friends and they make some enemies too. There is love, sex, hate and murder in this --- almost like a soap opera. The humor isn’t bad, but I don’t think I’m going to remember this book after next week.

I was reading another book when this was released and planned to read this next. Well, I read the first page, got lured in and couldn't put it down. The main character, John Corey, made me laugh out loud with his silly banter during a quite serious investigation. You can't help but like this colorful character and the story has you turning the page for more. In fact --- I'm in bed, it's so late that I can't keep my eyes open and I'm looking to see if the next chapter is short. I'm a John Corey fan.

I thought this book was really good, even though it started out a little slowly for me. I read it very quickly, though, once I got into it. It's the story of Jackie (Jaqueline), a mother who has recently divorced and is on the verge of turning 40. Jackie's friend Anne decides that they both need to get away for some rest and relaxtion, and books a trip to Hawaii for them both, only to drop out at the last minute, leaving Jackie to go alone. Jackie ends up finding love and adventure with a young surf instructor. Although neither her friends nor her ex-husband approve, she can't help but return to the island to be with her surfer guy, Kai. Trouble strikes, and Jackie is left to make a decision about what she wants for her life. Great book!

Such a Pretty Girl by Laura Wiess
Rating: 5 Stars
I received this book, which is coming out in January 2007, and I believe that it will be a must read for anyone who has a child, knows a child, or has ben a child ---everyone!!
SUCH A PRETTY GIRL by Laura Wiess is a wonderfully written story of a child hero in the world of children and families --- children who are asked to act like adults when the adults around them are a huge disappointment to them, and childhoods are lost because others do not do their parts as protectors and comforters for our own children. SUCH A PRETTY GIRL is a well- conceived and beautifully literary story of hardships and realities that none of us want to hear or believe. But we MUST try to absorb the truths of these terrible realities for way too many children in out communities live them every day.
This should be an award winning book like NIGHT by Elie Wiesel, and every bit as much a required reading for everyone. This is about life's wrongs that are still happening on a regular basis all around us. Fortunately, we can do things to help stop these tragedies, but most of us would rather live in our cocooned world and believe that "it’s their problem" and that "there's nothing I can do about it anyway," or perhaps the worst response, "it hurts me too much to hear about these things!" So we, as a community, go about our merry lives, or even through our own trials and problems and wait for someone else to deal with the unheard and unprotected children around us.
This is actually a very short, and very readable book that "hurts" only as much as the reader will allow. It was a great way to absorb some necessary truths. By reading it, we can say that perhaps we can understand just a little of the pain of our little "treasures" --- the children of our future, and respond as best as we know how!!! By reading the book, perhaps some of those survivors can be assured that they are being heard by someone and are not lost to everyone in their pain and/or salvation!!! A wonderfully readable book that everyone should read and discuss!

Goddess of the Rose by P. C. Cast
Rating: 5 Stars
To start off, I immediately liked this book because Beauty and the Beast is one of my classic favorites, and this book was the author’s personal take on the beloved tale. I have to tell you it astounded me how different it was and yet managed to enchant me within minutes. The mysteries implore you to read on and find the answers, even as you lose yourself to the great plot.
Mikki is the heroine who ends up accidentally breaking the Beast’s curse and freeing him from his imprisonment. In exchange for his freedom, the Beast whisks Mikki off to the Realm of the Rose, where he is Guardian --- a land he is both awed and feared in, but nonetheless calls home. Mikki slowly starts to see the inner working of both the people and the Realm, developing feelings for both. But can a human love a beast? She will have to find out while dodging enemies, unraveling mysteries and giving in to her darkest desires. A task daunting at times, but ultimately worth the price it comes with.
The first thing I noticed was the author’s great descriptions. The story came to life off the pages, and I felt like I was able to explore along with the heroine. And then there are the great characters. The heroine is quite loveable and sees the best in everyone, and makes a person cheer for her in her quest to right the wrongs done purposely or inadvertently. The hero is the haunted Beast, who is stong outwardly, but in need of understanding and hope inwardly. P.C. Cast really puts a new take on him. For me he became more real, facing the dilemmas and hardships never mentioned in any other story but all too real in life. Quite an interesting pair and really worth the read.
If there was anything I didn’t like about this book, it was that it came to an end. Eventually it will, but if you are like me, you will be so wrapped up in the story that the end will happen too fast and leave you wanting. Fortunately, this author has more great stories and the journey can continue in those pages for the avid reader.

Touch the Dark by Karen Chance
Rating: 5 Stars
This book is a must have for any paranormal fan. When I purchased it, I was drawn to the beautiful cover, and little did I know this book would end up on my permanent shelf. But Karen Chance is a wonderful author and really weaves magic into the story with her words. Captivating from beginning to end.
Cassandra is on the run from her past and anyone who would bring her back into that shady world. But her new life is soon interrupted and she is on the run once more. It's all because of a talent she has for communicating with spirits and being able to see the future --- a talent some would kill for and still might. Cassandra’s backed into a corner as allies turn into enemies and no one can be trusted. But a blast from her past might offer a solution if she is willing to pay a price. The question is, can she pay that price?
The details were fantastic. Vivid scenes and feelings from memorable characters who I definitely want to read more about. This is the beginning of a new series that will catch on and take the book world by storm. Glad I am along for the ride from book one. Happy reading.

The story of 2 boys, one on each side of the fence of a concentration camp, and how they become friends. A heart-wrenching read.

My Sister's Keeper by Jodi Picoult

This book makes you think hard about the complexity of families and how those interactions form our lives.
Jane H.
Mystic River by Dennis Lehane
Rating: 5 Stars
I missed this one when it first came out, and am so glad that I am now reading it. The characters come to life as you turn each beautifully written page, and it is really hard to put it down!

Case Histories by Kate Atkinson
Rating: 4 Stars
This was a very good book, but it was a little hard to read because of the jumps between so many characters. I'm looking forward to Kate's new one, ONE GOOD TURN.

The Wrong Hostage by Elizabeth Lowell
Rating: 4 Stars
A teenage boy is held hostage by smugglers. Very good.
Wendy Catalano
The Book Thief by Markus Zusak
Rating: 5 Stars
Although not a Young Adult myself (this was written for teens), this book taught me so much about an era I was not part of. This was a amazing story.
Ricki (rickimc@aol.com)
The King of Lies by John Hart
Rating: 1 Stars
This is a very bleak, dismal novel and I spent most of it pissed off at the main character. Also, the twist is rather predictable.
Peggy Probus (peggyprobus@netscape.net)
Counterplay by Robert K. Tanenbaum
Rating: 5 Stars
I've read all his novels about the Karp family and enjoyed every one. This one has Karp running for re-election as District Attorney, the escape of Andrew Kane, and more from the 'mole' people. A good read!!

At Risk by Patricia Cornwell
Rating: 2 Stars
I was very disappointed with this short novel. Cornwell needs another novel with her original characters.
Sandy (Yodasmommy@woh.rr.com)
Out Of Range by C. J. Box
Rating: 4 Stars
This is a new author for me and now I am going to have to go back and read this series from the beginning! Cast against the harshly beautiful Teton mountains, game warden Joe Pickett returns in a twisting, action-packed tale of greed, power, and murder.
Ron Giner
Lullaby by Ed McBain
Rating: 4 Stars
One of McBain's best. LULLABY is an 87th Precinct novel about a double homicide that captures your interest from page one and never lets up. It's nearly impossible to figure out who the killer is until the last 20 pages.
Jean Utley
Kidnapped by Jan Burke
Rating: 4 Stars
It's not the perfect Jan Burke mystery, but it's better than most other books out there. I loved the idea of this huge adoptive family protecting its own and sticking together even when they perhaps shouldn't.

She'll Never Tell by Hunter Morgan
Rating: 5 Stars
It isn't often I read a book and think: I HAVE to read whatever this author has written. I won't give away the secrets but... in this book, you'll find a serial killer in a Delaware resort town, and slippery clues that keep changing. And, you WILL get the rest of the series, I guarantee it.
Shirley Younger
H.R.H. by Danielle Steel
Rating: 5 Stars
This is Danielle's latest book about a princess, where ancient traditions conflict with reality and the pressures of modern life. The princess proves that simplicity, courage, and dignity win.

Angels & Demons by Dan Brown
Rating: 4 Stars
I was ready for a really good book, but it got off to a slow start. I'm halfway through now, and it is getting very exciting.
Ron Giner
Banker by Dick Francis
Rating: 4 Stars
This is the first Dick Francis book I've read. Since I've been reading mysteries for the last 40 years, this is somewhat hard to believe. Francis is very good. He succeeds in getting you to feel compassion for his chief protaganist and provides a good mystery alongside an interesting personal story for our hero.

The Thirteenth Tale by Diane Setterfield

This book, about the telling of a story and writing of a book, is fabulous, delightful, and hard to put down. A definite must read! 5+ stars!

Thirteen Moons by Charles Frazier
Rating: 4 Stars
Although not as good as Frazier's COLD MOUNTAIN, this book is a well-written and a well-told tale of a young man who is forced to make his own way in the world.

The Shipkiller by Justin Scott
Rating: 5 Stars
This is an oldie that well worth reading again. A doctor and his wife set sail across the Atlantic for a year-long voyage, only to have their sailboat run down by a supertanker, which kills Dr. Hardin's wife. The tanker cruises on, as if it had struck a nothing more than a cork bobber. Hardin plans his revenge: he will sink this monstrous ship or die trying. A great read.

This is the story of a white girl whose mother was killed when she was 4, and had to live with a brutal father. She finds her mother's friends, who are black, and they care for her more than anyone else. A good book.
David Siegel (dlsiegel@uwalumni.com)
Suspicious Minds by Martin Edwards
Rating: 4 Stars
A run-of-the-mill, but entertaining murder mystery.
Susan Helene Gottfried (Susan@westofmars.com)
The Heebie Jeebies at CBGB's by Steven Lee Beeber
Rating: 5 Stars
Chock full of musical history and the personalities that shaped the punk movement, Beeber's writing elevates this well above many other musical histories.
Kate Horan
When Madeline Was Young by Jane Hamilton
Rating: 4 Stars
The story and its crafting were the real protagonists of this book. While interesting to read, the characters seemed too shallow with respect to their situation, and the doctor seemed neither very bright nor very intuitive. Still, Hamilton is a good middle-level fiction writer and better than most mainstream fiction authors

Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close by Jonathan Safran Foer
Rating: 3 Stars
I'm only 70 pages in, but I find the style of this book unlike any other story I've read. It's a complex story and I'm hopeful that I'll be adding more stars to my review as I get further into the plot.
Teresa Warner
Horrorween by Al Sarrantonio
Rating: 3 Stars
This is a pretty good new Halloween horror story. The town of Orangefield is surrounded by a dark presence (known as Samhain-Lord of Death). When a boy disappears, the local dectective is not sure if Samhain is responsible. As Halloween approaches, the fate of the town will depend on the survival of a small group of people. The book had some lulls in it, but it was a great read, all in all.

Undead and Unwed by MaryJanice Davidson
Rating: 5 Stars
An entertaining and fun read! This story had me laughing all the way through. The cover art is what captured my eye to pick it up. It is a story about Betsy Taylor as a vampire and her journey between life to death and undead. She has enemies, allies, and a lust for designer shoes. This is an hilarious romp that is wickedly delightful and lusty.
David Siegel (dlsiegel@uwalumni.com)
Maitland Under Siege by James Patrick Hunt
Rating: 4 Stars
A fast-paced, although conventional, cop story.

Born in Death by J. D. Robb
Rating: 4 Stars
A great read, as always, from J. D. Robb (Nora Roberts). The characters are fun, the mystery is complex, and the story moves at a nice quick pace. I like seeing the characters evolve from book to book.

Secret Society Girl by Diana Peterfreund
Rating: 5 Stars
I loved this book! Once you start reading it, the story draws you into its secrets of a society so fascinating that you will be turning page after page to see where it all leads. I couldn't put it down. It all starts with Amy Haskel who is invited to attend a secret society meeting, Rose & Grave. She is the first woman to ever be invited to attend. Excitement and suspense follow until the very end. Extremely well written!

The Catcher in the Rye by J. D. Salinger
Rating: 5 Stars
This classic novel is unbelievably well-written. The story follows a sixteen-year-old boy, Holden Caulfield, who struggles to survive while caught between adolescence and adulthood. Even more, Holden searches for an impossible dream, a Peter Pan dream, where innocence exists forever, free form corruption of adulthood. Through a series of depressing and overwhelming events, Holden is driven over the edge until he can find the answer. Salinger creates memorable images, motifs, and symbols in the story, and he connects each event to one another. This is my favorite classic, and I recommend this novel to all, for it teaches a great deal about life through a "Peter Pan" story.
Marilyn Shoemaker
Suddenly Sexy by Linda Francis Lee
Rating: 5 Stars
I just loved this book, especially since it is the first of three books about childhood friendships. Katie's story's based on three friends who grew up together who have remained close through the years and work together.
Kate's story is about her childhood love, Jesse....a hunk, sexy, charming, all of the things that make this book steamy and fun. If you read the editorial reviews, you'll see why you need to buy this great book!
Marilyn Shoemaker
The Arabian Love-Child by Michelle Reid
Rating: 5 Stars
I had forgotten what a wonderful author Michelle Reid is, so when a friend suggested that I read this particular book, I immediately purchased it and read it in one sitting.
It's very powerfully written and highly charged. At times, I was so angry with Rafiq. Even though he was so sexy, he was extremely proud and really didn't see the whole picture.
Melanie is a passionate woman, at least when it comes to Rafiq. But she has a secret, and to share it with this stubborn and prideful man might just destroy her. The first chapters in this book will make you understand just how explosive this story is going to become. You won't be able to put this one down.
It's a wonderful love story and full of passion and sparks. Delightful!

Morrigan's Cross by Nora Roberts
Rating: 4 Stars
A different book than I expected from Nora, but I really started to enjoy it and now must get the next two, since it's part of a trilogy of Vampire books.
Peggy Kincaid (Cali_LB@msn.com)
Strange Piece of Paradise by Terri Jentz
Rating: 4 Stars
This nonfiction book is, in places, very painful to read. You can't make up this sort of story, or perhaps it is too horrifying in so many places that you wish it were fiction, but it isn't. It is a coming-of-age tale about two young girls, set in the West. Having been a victim before, I can understand why Terri "needed" to solve this, but I'm not sure I'd ever have the courage she had to face it all again. If you can come away from this book without some tears and pain, then you are a better person than I am.
Ginny Rusch (bamaginny1002@aol.com)
A Three Dog Life by Abigail Thomas
Rating: 5 Stars
The true story of a very strong, brave woman and how she copes with her husband's brain injury. It's not a book about dogs, bur, her dogs are a very real comfort to her. As a dog lover, I can appreciate that.
Peggy Kincaid (Cali_LB@msn.com)
The Collectors by David Baldacci
Rating: 4 Stars
I love Baldacci's books. There are a variety of characters and at least two story lines. I also love stories that leave you hanging at the end for the completion of one of the tales. I just know Mr. Baldacci is going to finish that one in the next book. I loved THE CAMEL CLUB and this second story is no exception. Washington politics, murder, collecting rare books and more. You'll love it all.

Abundance by Sena Jeter Naslund
Rating: 4 Stars
A BIG book about Marie Antoinette by the author of AHAB'S WIFE. It's as delicious and abundant as the times Marie Antoinette lived in.
I really enjoyed the story told from Marie's point of view. There's lots of history and great detail of the time period.

The Boy in the Striped Pajamas by John Boyne
Rating: 5 Stars
A story about a 9-year-old boy living in Berlin during World War II. The boy's father is an officer in the Nazi party and the family goes to live in Poland when the father gets a new assignment. It is a well-told, but haunting story. It is for young adults, but I thoroughly enjoyed it.
