Dwayne Street
The Official Blog of Marshall Jamrozik by Sean Cummings
Rating: 4 Stars
E-novel about a forty-year-old superhero who has just been found out by The Drudge Report.

Michele L.
Honeymoon by James Patterson and Howard Roughan
Rating: 4 Stars
It was an absolutely riveting read! I finished it in two days and then passed it on to my friend who loves his books also! I loved the plot twists, the characters, and storyline. Although, about 3/4 of the way through, I figured out the shocker at the end. Patterson slipped a little with this one.

Michele L.
Trouble in High Heels by Christina Dodd
Rating: 5 Stars
This was absolutely a smashing novel of power, lust, greed, sex, action and adventure. Dodd is a master storyteller that delivers deep characterizations along with a twisting story line that will leave the readers guessing until the final end.

Cody Gerber
Across The High Lonesome by James McNay Brumfield
Rating: 5 Stars
I picked up this book when I saw that Larry McMurtry --- the author of my all-time favorite book, LONESOME DOVE --- gave it high marks. I must say I am glad I took his advice. This is a story of the modern American west. Molly Mendoza has just left her fiancé after finding him in bed with her best friend. Her future life crushed, and she stumbles into a job at Granite Creek Pack Station in California's rugged eastern Sierra Nevada Mountains. She has no Idea what she is in for, but she soon falls in love with the Mountains and the Lifestyle. Brumfield does an excellent job of developing the characters that work for the pack station. I soon came to feel they were my friends. And his descriptions of the high mountains are amazing (I googled some of the places he describes, like Shepards Pass, and they are amazing! I did not know places like this existed in California!). I had the feeling that though this is fiction, the author was writing about real people and things that actually happened. There is also plenty of drama and action here to keep you turning pages. I have to say I have not read anything like it since LONESOME DOVE. The author nailed this one and I am sure it will become a classic tale of the modern west!

The King of Lies by John Hart
Rating: 5 Stars
Hooray for this new North Carolina author! If you want an “on the edge of your seat”, “can’t put it down” type of mystery, this is the book for you! This was so well written, I stayed up late to finish. It’s been a long time before I did that. The story is about a lawyer whose father is murdered. The lawyer is a suspect, but he didn’t do it. He doesn’t come forward with an alibi, however, because he thinks his sister might be responsible. At times, I was frustrated with the protagonist because he is weak and he knows it. But throughout the book, he becomes stonger and his life becomes more clear. I really enjoyed this, and I can’t wait for his next one.

Marsha
Twisted by Jonathan Kellerman
Rating: 3 Stars
I'd rate this above average for a detective thriller as a female Los Angeles cop chases a serial killer with the help of a bright young student.

Debbie (delphimo@yahoo.com)
Wickett's Remedy by Myla Goldberg
Rating: 4 Stars
This book was written with comments in the margins by angels, people, etc,. which, at times, I found very annoying. A disturbing look at the influenza outbreak in 1917/18 and what happened.

Janie Kress
Katzenjammer by Jackson Tippett McCrae
Rating: 5 Stars
Possibly the best book I've ever come across. It's funny to the point of laughing out loud in public, and so well put together that I was just amazed. So many times you find a book that is well written, only to find it has no plot, or a book that has a great plot and is very funny, but is written badly. This book has it all. I'll be reading everything I can get my hands on by this great writer!

Cuttis Mitchell (mitchellc@library.phila.gov)
The Last Spymaster by Gayle Lynds

They will make a movie out of this.

Ruth
If You Lived Here, I'd Know Your Name by Heather Lende
Rating: 4 Stars
The author and her husband move to Alaska as newlyweds and end up staying there to raise their family. As the writer of obituaries for the local paper, she comes face to face with the dangers of living in this rugged land.

Ruth
Burnt Toast by Teri Hatcher
Rating: 4 Stars
As a single mother, Teri struggles to raise her daughter with as normal a life as possible. This is no easy task for a celebrity. I really admire her for not letting her sudden fame go to her head.

Laurance Tower
It's Midnight & I'm Not Famous Yet by W. P. Strange
Rating: 5 Stars
When your life turns upside down, it might not be a bad thing. A story told with heart, honesty and humor. This is a contemporary story of love, regret, recrimination and Little League. This poetic novel is by a writer who isn't afraid to take chances.

Janice Kind (KINDLEELF@AOL.COM)
Beneath a Marble Sky by John Shors
Rating: 5 Stars
Another book suggested on Bookreporter. There is a lot of attention to detail on the history and politics of the era.

A very touching and compelling book that is great for both adults and students. There are many wonderful discussion guides to use for your group. No one must forget what happened.

Murder Among Us by Ann Granger
Rating: 3 Stars
Another in the series featuring the English village of Bamford. A murder a minute seems to happen there. This is light entertainment to be enjoyed by those who can't get enough of the English village who-dun-its.

Matt St. Amand
Blue by J. D. Riso
Rating: 4 Stars
The story of a girl named Blue who escapes her numbed little hometown for Los Angeles, California with dreams of Sunset Strip and marrying rich. She is rescued from waiting tables in a greasy spoon by charismatic Kevin, a freelance drug dealer, hired tough, and slippery leech. Under the guise of flattering Blue, Kevin talks her into becoming a stripper. Just when it seems that Blue is about to disappear into the maze and shadows of Kevin's hollow praise and promises, she reconnects with her inner compass, and strikes out to create her own identity.

This was a very powerful read, with crisp dialogue and unforgettable characters. Although it's not a cliffhanger mystery, the plot had me turning pages at a feverish rate. I highly recommend this fresh new voice in fiction.

Sandra F.
Dear Irene by Jan Burke
Rating: 3 Stars
An entertaining light summer read about a reporter and her detective boyfriend. The plot involved the usual deranged guy stalking Irene Kelly. The book has some good plot twists.

Michele Lauer-Bader (mlauerba@aol.com)
Pardonable Lies: A Maisie Dobbs novel by Jacqueline Winspear
Rating: 5 Stars
This book was sent to me by an editor. I took it on vacation and loved it. Unfortunately, I had to wait 2 weeks to get another in the series.

The story takes place in England after World War I. Maisie, psychologist and investigator, gets involved in 3 cases. PARDONABLE LIES is a well-written mystery with book discussion possibiities.

Not Even For Love by Sandra Brown
Rating: 2 Stars
NOT EVEN FOR LOVE was originally published in 1982 before Sandra Brown changed her genre. It's still not a bad book, just not as good as her work now.

Laurene Miller
The Messenger by Tami Hoag
Rating: 5 Stars
I loved the way the story keeps you in suspense throughout the whole book. It was excellent.

K.T. Barger
Fear by Jeff Abbott
Rating: 4 Stars
Well-written, fast-paced thriller with a high body count.

Lisa
Almost by Elizabeth Benedict
Rating: 4 Stars
I really liked this book about a woman who is separated from her husband, and has moved on literally and spiritually, when he suddenly is found dead of unknown causes. The resulting search for answers is strong and interesting. There is an excellent set of colorful subcharacters of interest, and the settings of both NYC and a fictional version of Martha's Vineyard are both well done.

Kathy Kasten (kkasten911@yahoo.com)
Eleven on Top by Janet Evanovich
Rating: 4 Stars
Good as always. Hilarious. This bounty hunter is lucky she ever gets it right. It's funny and very addicting. I would recommend this book to anyone who wants a quick and interesting read.

Marilyn Shoemaker
The Trouble in High Heels by Christina Dodd
Rating: 5 Stars
I absolutely loved this book and could not put it down. It's romantic suspense at it's best. A handsome Italian paired with a "cheeky" blond attorney. Plus the passion, well, let's say they're combustible together!

It's was like watching the Grace Kelly and Cary Grant movie, TO CATCH A THIEF... jewelry heist, passion, intrigue and such intensity between two dynamic characters, plus the Italian Mob.

It's just another wonderful story penned by Christina Dodd.

Kathy Kasten (kkasten911@yahoo.com)
The Fourth Bear by Jasper Fforde
Rating: 4 Stars
I have enjoyed every book by Jasper Fforde. This was good, but not as good as his Thursday Next series. However, I have loved all of his books. If I could be any author, I would like to be him. When I am reading his books, I have such fantastic dreams, just like in the books.

T. Thomas
Dead Wrong by J. A. Jance
Rating: 4 Stars
The latest in the Joanna Brady series.

Corky Mayo (imardr2@yahoo.com)
Follow the River by James Alexander Thom
Rating: 4 Stars
This novel fictionalizes the historical account of Mary Draper Ingle's journey home. She and her children are captured by Shawnee Indians. After 6 months in captivity, her children are taken from her and she journeys all the way home to her husband with nothing but the dress on her back and with only previously memorized landmarks to guide her.

Yonnie Smith
Safe Harbor by Danielle Steel
Rating: 3 Stars
At first I thought it was a bit depressing as the main characters are a very lonely 11-year-old girl and her grief-stricken mother. But, they befriend an awesome man while at their summer beach home, and he brings love and happiness to the both of them, and they begin living again. I enjoyed it after I started getting into it.

Sharron
Twelve Sharp by Janet Evanovich
Rating: 4 Stars
Once again, Evanovich entertains us with her Stephanie Plum story. As always, Lula and Grandma are a hoot. The big question remains: Will Stephanie ever be able to choose between Joe and Ranger?

Sharron
The Third Secret by Steve Berry
Rating: 3 Stars
While this book is fiction, Berry uses well-researched background for his story. He did a great job weaving HIS story into the facts of the miracles at Fatima, Medjugorie, and the Catholic church. While the ending is so unbelievable, it is still a story that created some interesting discussion in my book club.

Sharron
One Mississippi by Mark Childress
Rating: 3 Stars
This is an interesting book about a teenage boy and his very disfuctional family and friends, growing up in Mississippi during the 70s. There are lots of issues --- prejudice, integration, bullying, and homosexuality are presented yet, you don't feel a bad taste in your mouth. I just wanted to keep going. It was very readable.

Roxie
The Midwife's Tale by Gretchen Moran Laskas
Rating: 3 Stars
This book follows the life of a midwife. It is a very enjoyable read, but is not always believable.

Allan Fredericks (afredericks1@msn.com)
The Mephisto Club by Tess Gerritsen
Rating: 5 Stars
This was a well thought-out novel and I kept wanting more. The way the author describes the death scenes puts you there and you can actually get a feel for what actually happened. A very well-written book. Kudos to Tess Gerritsen.

Roxie
Mrs. Kimble by Jennifer Haigh
Rating: 4 Stars
The story revolves around 3 women, all Mrs. Kimbles, married to the same man at different times. It is interesting to see how many times this man reinvents himself. It would be a 5-star book if she had given more insight into WHY he was the way he was.

Antoinette
To The Power of Three by Laura Lippman
Rating: 4 Stars
An excellent page turner --- I could not put it down til I found out how it ended. There is a rift between three friends who were inseparable until their last year of high school. Then, there is a shooting at the school, and one friend is dead, one is in critical condition, and one shot in the foot. The one speaking is not telling us the whole truth. The writer keeps you guessing till the end.

Kellie (acountkel@bellsouth.net)
The Mermaid Chair by Sue Monk Kidd
Rating: 4 Stars
This was a very interesting book --- interesting in the sense of where it took me. I did not like the protagonist, Jessie. I thought the idea of her going to the island to tend to her mother and falling immediately in love with “Brother Thomas” was sinful and hateful and so totally not real life. But then, with about 100 pages left in the book, I was enlightened and it made more sense. I won’t give away the last part of the book, but it was unexpected. I was totally down a different path in my mind so the ending was surprising. I am not sure I would agree with the "happy" ending. I think in real life the husband (Hugh) would have left her (Jessie). I honestly skimmed through some of the mermaid, spiritual stuff. In some ways, it’s almost unnecessary. However, I guess it gave the book more color. The rating for this book improved after I finished it.

Antoinette
Back to Wando Passo by David Payne
Rating: 5 Stars
I have read all books written by this author and love the power of his storytelling. This takes place in the present and past at a "plantation" called Wando Passo. The evil of the past is affecting the owners of the present. I loved the way the two stories flowed separately and then intertwined at the end. Excellent book --- read it.

Antoinette
Water For Elephants by Sara Gruen
Rating: 5 Stars
This book transported me to another time --- the time of the Depression and the circus. An old man in a nursing home ponders his life working in a circus after the circus comes to town. A very real portrayal by the author. I loved this book and highly recommend it.

Carolyn
6 Rainier Drive by Debbie Macomber
Rating: 5 Stars
This is the 6th book in her Cedar Cove series, which begins with 16 LIGHTHOUSE ROAD, and includes 204 ROSEWOOD LANE, 311 PELICAN COURT, 44 CRANBERRY POINT, and 50 HARBOR STREET. Cedar Cove is a small town in the state of Washington, where everyday people deal with life. There is love, happiness, and celebrations, as well as secrets, lies, heartache, and murder. I hope you enjoy your visit to Cedar Cove, Washington, "where people care about one another--and they show it!"

Rating: 5 Stars
Probably my favorite Jennifer Crusie novel, and that's saying a lot. This book is just so awesome.

Lathe of Heaven by Ursula K Le Guin
Rating: 4 Stars
Wow, this was a pretty good book! I don't usually read much in the sci-fi genre, but this one really sounded good, and it was. I'm so glad I decided to read it.

Rebekah Crain (littleminx@cox.net)
Scent of Roses by Kat Martin
Rating: 5 Stars
This was the first book I've ever read by Kat Martin, though she's come highly praised from my grandmother for years. And I think it is safe to say that after reading this book, I shall be delving into the world of Kat Martin much more in the future. Suspensefully exciting, with just a little romance thrown in.

Lizzie Moore
Sleeping With Schubert by Bonnie Marson
Rating: 5 Stars
This book swept me away with its highly original premise --- a modern woman gets "inhabited" by Franz Schubert, the composer. It's moving and funny and it grabbed me from the start. A great book group choice. It's got a classic first line, too. I was hooked from the start!

Rebekah Crain (littleminx@cox.net)
The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time by Mark Haddon
Rating: 5 Stars
Wow, what a good book! It was really enlightening getting to see the world through the eyes of this autistic teen. I definitely recommend this one.

Happiness Sold Separately by Lolly Winston

I loved this book and couldn't put it down. It was unpredictable and intriguing, plus both sad and amusing at times. The characters seemed like real, flawed people.

Knocked Out by My Nunga-Nungas by Louise Rennison
Rating: 5 Stars
Yet another hilarious read and fine installment in the Georgia Nicolson adventures! Quick, light, and totally enjoyable. Leaves you wanting more of Georgia, her snoggable Sex God, and everyone else in her silly little life.

Rebekah Crain (littleminx@cox.net)
The Ink Dark Moon: Love Poems by Ono no Komachi and Izumi Shikibu
Rating: 5 Stars
Two thumbs up for this book! I'm a sucker for poetry anyways, but the poems in this book were lovely. The story behind the poetry, as told in the introduction, was so romantic. I had no idea about the history that surrounds much Japanese (especially older) poetry. Komachi's and Shikibu's poems were both beautiful and yet filled with sadness. The reader could truly feel what the poet was trying to say. Remarkable!

Keepin' It Real by Sandra McLeod Humphrey
Rating: 4 Stars
KEEPIN' IT REAL is a truly awesome book, one so true to life that it's not just for teens! I'm 25, but I could completely relate to what Leslie was going through at age 13. I didn't come from a broken home, but I was 13 once and we all know what it's like to be that age. You're on the verge of so many things, and yet figuring out what those things are and where you fit in can be so difficult. In her book, Humphrey drew such a realistic portrait of Leslie, her problems, and how she came to work through them all. You came not only to relate to Leslie at age 13, but to also consider your life in the here and now.

This is the kind of book that any one can enjoy and gain something from.

Rebekah Crain (littleminx@cox.net)
Mother & Child by Jan Reynolds
Rating: 5 Stars
MOTHER & CHILD: VISIONS PF PARENTING FROM INDIGENOUS COUNTRIES is a wonderful book! I could personally never see myself traveling to even half of the places the the author traveled to in order to gain insight for this book. Yet she did, and it couldn't have produced anything better than what she's written within these pages. The behind-the-scenes look into the lives of these anything-but-modern cultures is moving and inspiring. I think that all women who are or will one day be mothers should read this book because I believe we could all learn a thing or two from the women and cultures that Reynolds wrote about. The bonds that tie these mother-and-child pairs together is so strong and undeniable, yet not overbearing or ostentatious.

Additionally, the photographs were brilliant and showed the reader just exactly what the author was talking about --- very poignant.

Savannah Breeze by Mary Kay Andrews

The perfect book after reading THE MARCH. Weezie and BeBe can get into so much trouble, yet always come out smelling like a Goergia peach. A warning to be on the lookout for con people in these troubled times.

The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini
Rating: 5 Stars
Yes, this is a very great story. The writing is real, along with the pain and suffering and guilt of the young boy. From the book: “…forgiveness budded, not with fanfare…but with pain gathering its things, packing up, and slipping away unannounced in the middle of the night.”

A Complicated Kindness by Miriam Toews
Rating: 3 Stars
This book has won a number of awards and generated a lot of media attention. I don't understand what all the excitement is about. It's a story about a girl growing up in a Mennonite community, but there is little sense of what being a Mennonite means. It seems like just another coming of age story.

Stealing With Style by Emyl Jenkins
Rating: 4 Stars
A light and entertaining mystery dealing with antiques and appraisals. Each chapter begins with a question and answer excerpt from an antiques expert's newspaper column so there is a little to be learned in the process of the ongoing mystery.

Manhunt by Janet Evanovich
Rating: 3 Stars
This was a cute romance set in the Alaskan Mountains. Alexandra gives up the high life in NJ to tempt her fate in the Alaskan Wilderness in an effort to find a husband. Faced with a shack with no running water and no electricity, she sets out to survive ("I Love Lucy" style) and it is only with the help of her hunky neighbor that she makes a go of it....

Linda Sheehan (linda.lsheehan@gmail.com)
The Book Thief by Markus Zusak
Rating: 5 Stars
This book is magical, the writing is lyrical, such that I wanted to highlight at least one sentence on every page, if not more. The story itself is sad, given that it was written about the early regime of the Nazis and takes place in a small village in Germany --- but it's not depressing. Don't miss this one. I have rarely been touched so deeply!

The Last Good Day by Peter Blauner

The Lone Ranger and Tonto Fistfight in Heaven by Sherman Alexie
Rating: 5 Stars
An unusual approach to a book of short stories, Alexie creates each one using the same main characters, all residents of the same Indian reservation. In the book you can clearly see developing personal and political issues being raised by Alexie. Much of the book centers on the ongoing discrimination against American Indians and their own struggles with their cultural traditions and the assimilation of culture of the United States. Yet hints and underlying talk focuses mostly on Alexie's own struggles with his relationships with his father and his love interests. This collection somehow manages to maintain a humorous approach to all topics and would make any reader connect with the culture and the man.

The Lincoln Lawyer by Michael Connelly
Rating: 5 Stars
Mickey Haller is a fairly sleazy defense attorney who mostly defends the likes of drug dealers, prostitutes, outlaw bikers, etc. Now, he has stumbled upon his dream client --- a wealthy Hollywood playboy. Mickey must reach deep into his bag of dirty tricks to keep his client in the system long enough to make some serious money off him, especially since his client appears to be innocent. If you like John Grisham novels, you'll love this book.

Rating: 5 Stars
At the recommendation of an opposite- coast email friend, I began reading the first of a series called AT HOME IN MITFORD, about the life of an Episcopalian priest. Now in this 7th installment, I continue to enjoy each book with a 5-star rating for all of them. If you choose to read, begin with the first book, then follow through. You may be enthralled as much as I am.

Triggerfish Twist by Tim Dorsey
Rating: 5 Stars
Want murder, mayhem, and plenty of chuckles with your gore? Dorsey is definitely your man. Satire is his best game and he beats the Florida lifestyle into flotsam with his spot-on observations of sunny, funny life in Paradise. He also manages to concoct a pretty good yarn that has more turns than the Indy 500. He's so good, I am re-reading his other stuff. Check Dorsey out, you'll be glad you did.

Year's Best Fantasy 3 by edited by David G. Hartwell and Kathryn Cramer
Rating: 5 Stars
These stories collected in 2002 are all quite good and a few are truly superb. Reading these stories is time well spent exploring recent works by exciting new (to me) authors like Ron Wolfe (Our Friend Electricity) as well as the always excellent venerables like Tanith Lee (don't miss "Persian Eyes"), Gene Wolfe and Ursula Le Guin. If you have never sampled Fastasy writing, this book is a wonderful starting point.

Back When We Were Grownups by Anne Tyler
Rating: 4 Stars
This was an interesting book. The thing I like about Tyler is that her character development is so intricate. I always feel like her characters and her stories are real. Because, they can be. This was about a woman who, in her 50s, questions the path she chose in life. She married Joe Davitch, who was divorced with 3 girls. They are married 6 years and he dies. After all of those years after his death, she raises his girls, continues to run his business and has Joe’s Uncle (Poppy) living with her. (He is 99 years old.) She starts to think what her life would have been if she married her boyfriend, Will, who she dumped to marry Joe. She has never felt she was actually part of the Davitch family. Just a fixture they have grown accustomed to. So, she looks Will up, and the story takes off from there. I have yet to read a book by Tyler I didn’t like. This one is no exception.

Break No Bones by Kathy Reichs
Rating: 4 Stars
This was a great book! Tempe Brennan is in Charleston on an archaeological dig with students when they find a body that is clearly not an artifact. Before long, she is completely involved in finding out the identity of the body and the killer. Before long, there are two more bodies and several missing persons. I really enjoyed her very methodical investigation into what turns out to be a horrendous scheme of murder and mayhem. There is also some romance thrown into the mix, which adds greatly to the persona of Temperance. This is a satisfying series.

While The Daffodils Danced by Cathi LaMarche

The Assassins by Tim LaHaye and Jerry B. Jenkins
Rating: 5 Stars
I began with Left Behind and I've never looked back. Cruising through this series, as soon as I finish one I'm running off to buy the next (or several) installment. The Antichrist, the Tribulation Saints, the Witnesses, the good, the bad and the ugly are all wrapped up within the pages of these books. ASSASSINS is number six and I'm just about to jump into number seven. Can't wait!

Lying with Strangers by James Grippando
Rating: 5 Stars
James Grippando's book, LYING WITH STRANGERS, has all the elements I love in a book --- suspense, fast-paced scenes, conflict and even a little bit of humor. Though I haven't finished reading it, it is one of the best books I've read in a long time. If you're looking for a book that cuts to the chase and doesn't spend extra time providing details you don't need, or a book that continually has something new going on, or one that keeps you wondering who the good guys and the bad guys are, then this book is for you.

Peyton Shields is working as a pediatric intern for the largest children's hospital in Boston. Her husbard works for a well-established law firm. How do two people like this end up on the wrong end of a murder investigation? Find out by reading LYING WITH STRANGERS.

Once I finish this book, I definitely look forward to checking out some of Grippando's others!

Leaving Home by Anita Brookner
Rating: 5 Stars
This is a great story about growing up and leaving home. There is such emotion put into the story that one feels a strong bond with the heroine, Emma Roberts. She leaves her comfortable home in London and begins anew in Paris. Her struggle is what kind of relationship she wants to develop for herself, or if she should just be satisfied with the hand dealt to her. This is a very compelling story!

Shameless Exploitation... by Paul Newman & A.E. Hotchner
Rating: 5 Stars
I so enjoyed SHAMELESS EXPLOITATION IN PURSUIT OF THE COMMON GOOD. Tongue firmly in cheek, these two described how their success in the salad dressing business began in spite of the unorthodox (at that time) business principles, which they firmly stuck to. It covers all their ventures, including the $275 million that has gone to charity since the beginning of their adventure. Don't miss this read, it is well worth it and will do your heart good.

This is a book about choices and how they come back to affect you later on. The main character is a middle-aged mom and widow who comes face to face with the man who was once so important. Frozen by Jay Bonansinga
Rating: 4 Stars
This book is so "cool," and that isn't a play on the title. It is a first in a series showcasing Special Agent Ulysses Grove. The story starts off a bit slowly, but the tension mounts the more you read and the more the plot plays out. Once you start, you won't want to stop until the end and I've already bought his second in the series, TWISTED. Ulysses is a fascinating character all by himself, but he has journalist Maura County, who completes the team and keeps the action going. I am so happy I took the chance and bought this one.

Sequence by Lori Andrews
Rating: 4 Stars
Lori Andrews is another new author and contender to stand beside Kathy Reichs and Patricia Cornwell. SEQUENCE has a great storyline mixing serial killers and genetics. The female lead is very likable, and the whole book is a real page turner. I think Ms. Andrews has a great future ahead of her in this particular field. As with Kathy Reichs, she has a variety of jobs and is well respected in her field, so it is always a joy to find someone so overqualified and making it all work.

Locked Rooms by Laurie R. King
Rating: 5 Stars
I've been hooked on detective fiction since I'm teaching a course featuring the genre. I found LOCKED ROOMS, a gem blending Sherlock Holmes and King's female sleuth, his wife Mary Russell, in a riveting tale about the aftermath of the 1906 San Francisco quake. Rating: 5 Stars
CIA agent John Wells, the first Western intelligence officer to penetrate the upper levels of al-Qaeda, is assigned a mission on American soil by bin Laden's chief deputy, Ayman al-Zawahiri. Wells, now a devout Muslim (for real), finds his years spent in deep cover have left him conflicted. Has he been turned? The scrutiny intensifies when two bombs go off in L.A., killing 300. Although a bit clunky, the mounting suspense, a believable scenario and a final twist add up to a compelling tale of frightening possibilities. It's not for the squeamish, though --- the torture sequences and bombing descriptions are graphic and chillingly real.

Long Lost by David Morrell
Rating: 5 Stars
This book is very interesting. It's about a man whose brother goes missing as a little boy. Years later, the man becomes successful and his brother comes back into his life. The brother tries to kill him and take his family. The other brother decides to track down this man by thinking like him. He is told by the FBI that the man isn't his brother, even though he knows in his heart that he is his long lost brother. He later has a life-and-death struggle with his brother to save his family. This book is really about how religion can really screw a person's life if one's view of it becomes obsessive.

Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil by John Berendt
Rating: 3 Stars
This was supposedly a true story of a murder that happened in Savannah in the 80s. A rich, homosexual, antique dealer is accused of killing young Danny Handsford, one of his employees. First of all, I had a really hard time believing this book is actually nonfiction. Secondly, if it was Fiction, it would be terrible. I DID like the information about Savannah and how it related to the rest of the south and the rest of the country, for that matter. That was very interesting. I thought the book tended to be slow in some parts, especially the sections that had nothing at all to do with the actual story --- like the Alpha Ball. It was an interesting part of the book, but I am sitting here wondering why the author felt the need to put it in. I am glad I read this, but I am also glad I am done.

DANSE MACABRE and THE EXPECTED ONE by Laurell Hamilton and Kathleen McGowan
Rating: 3 Stars
Three stars for both. I'm having a bit of a love/hate relationship with both books. I've read everything else in Hamilton's Anita Blake series and watched it go from imaginative, convoluted mystery with a hint of sex/romance to about 90% sex with characters seeming to move around just enough to go from one place they're having sex to the next. And yet --- I'm compelled to read it because I've read the others.

THE EXPECTED ONE is the better of the two books, but again, it really reminds me of THE DA VINCI CODE. Maybe I would have liked it more if it had come out first. Still, the premise is intriguing and good for conversation or book groups and the book is one I would definitely recommend.

Double Standards by Judith Mcnaught
Rating: 5 Stars
We live in a city in the Philippines where books are very much in demand. Unfortunately for us, however interested we may be, it's nearly impossible for us to get a hold of many of them. You see, in our city, the books sold in the bookstores are kind of moldy and old. Some pages are even torn. If you want to go someplace else to buy a particular book, you have to travel for three hours to get there. And worse, even if the books are new, they cost a lot --- more like $10. That's why we are very unfortunate here.

I have always enjoyed reading Judith McNaught's books. DOUBLE STANDARDS was her first book that made me cry. There are some scenes in the story that I feel I can relate to. The book is very emotional for me, and very heartwarming. You should try it. It's really good!

The Assassins Gallery by David L. Robbins
Rating: 5 Stars
An utterly absorbing novel concerning a plot to assassinate President Franklin Roosevelt during the waning days of World War II. Author Robbins mixes in modern-day concerns about terrorism along with the actual terror of living during a war. The would-be female assassin is every bit a James Bond-like character brought down to human dimensions. History and conspiracy buffs take note, this book will get you thinking and possibly validating your theories concerning FDR's death. For a general audience, Robbins' writing is descriptive and moves quickly. An interesting and stimulating summer read.

Blood Done Sign My Name by Timothy B. Tyson
Rating: 5 Stars
This book is well written and moving. The author is gut-wrenchingly honest about the issues of race that influenced his upbringing and life. This is a true story that is part memoir and part history lesson, woven together so it reads like a novel. I learned a lot and have gone back to re-read sections that challenged me to think in new ways.

Walking in Circles Before Lying Down by Merrill Markoe
Rating: 4 Stars
Although this isn't the Pulitzer Prize-type of book, it is VERY enjoyable and VERY funny. I laughed out loud several times while reading it and garnered stares from everyone around me. It didn't bother me, I just wanted to tell them about the funny passage. The story is about a woman who falls on hard times and although she's always talked to her dog, NOW her dog starts talking back, as do all the other dogs she encounters. (They actually say a lot of thing I have always thought dogs were thinking.) This was very original and a quick read. Highly recommended.

Rating: 3 Stars
John Hodgman is the "PC" in the Macintosh Computer ads and has also been seen on "The Daily Show" and heard on NPR. I Feel Bad About My Neck by Nora Ephron
Rating: 3 Stars
This book starts off as the author muses about the vagaries of turning old and the turns your body takes, not always for the better. It was very funny, and it kept me reading, but I was a little disappointed at the end of the book. It seemed like her sense of humor about it all sort of evaporated, and she was just pissed about the whole deal. I would recommend this quick read that has enough funny passages to make up for the slow areas at the end.

Typical "Dr. Scarpetta-saves-the-day" book. It's a good read, especially if your familiar with all the usual main characters. Marino is his pesky self. However, there's a little too much technical information about tthe brains of psychopaths.

Black Wind by Clive Cussler and Dirk Cussler
Rating: 5 Stars
This is one of the best adventure books I've read in a long time. It opens at the end of WW II with the Japanese planning a biological-weapons attack on the U.S. From there, we are taken to North Korea and a madman determined to reunite the peninsula under Communist rule while throwing out a red herring to Dirk Pitt and his NUMA team to set them off the trail. Bottom line: read this book if you love a fast-paced, edge-of-your-seat adventure.

The author was raised and lived in the German part of Switzerland, and as an early-20's adult went on a vaction with her brother to Africa. While sightseeing, she saw a male Masai who was the most beautiful human being she had ever seen. This is the beginning of the book and this memoir is all about how she eventually met this man and finally got together with him. This story is a page turner as you read about her trials and tribulations due to her decision to live in an entirely new world due to the love of her life. Her highway of life is quite smooth until after she has a child when complications start piling up like Mt. Everest in the way. This gives you a wonderful insight of life in the bush in Africa. A grand read!

Triptych by Karin Slaughter
Rating: 5 Stars
Ms. Slaughter delivers again with another suspenseful, gritty and graphic novel that departs from her Grant County series. There are twists and turns around every corner, as well as characters who make your heart break and others who will give you chills. The story is fast paced and will keep you guessing as you sit on the edge of your seat, putting the puzzle pieces together between Michael, John and Will.

Airframe by Michael Crichton
Rating: 3 Stars
This was an abridged audiobook read by Blair Brown.

A female VP of a jet airframe builder tries to solve the mystery of why a plane malfunctioned during flight.

The author kept the suspense going but due to this abridged edition, some parts of the story apparently were left out which would have enhanced the story and made it more understandable (mainly the subplot of the workers/union).

The Murders In The Rue Morgue by Edgar Allan Poe

Poe was more complex than many remember from just "The Raven." This was allegedly the first "detective story." Don't be fooled by the short length. It has some deep prose that needs to be slowly and thoughtfully digested.

Ozark Annie
The Children's Hour by Marcia Willett
Rating: 4 Stars
If you'd like to read a story with interesting characters that seem very real, this is for you. I guessed some of the "secrets" from very early in the book, but there were many I would never have guessed, even till the last chapter. Some of the descriptions could have been shortened, but all in all, it's a comfortable read. Too long, perhaps, but easy and interesting. Willett's writing is comparable to Penny Vincenzi and Rosamund Pilcher.

Water for Elephants by Sara Gruen
Rating: 5 Stars
This book was so great that I would give it 10 stars if I could. Jacob Jankowski, who is now 93 years old and in a nursing home, is reminiscing about his life as a veterinarian in a rag tag circus in the 1930s. He finds himself as a passenger on their train quite by accident, and decides to stay on and work for a while, since this happened during the Depression. His adventures during that time are fascinating. I savored every word and hated to see it end, although I was driven to see what happened. Don't miss this one. I loved the ending.

With the help of her film star friend, Gillian transforms into a Marilyn Monroe look-alike and signs on a Nerd cruise headed for Mexico. She also brings along backup; P.I. Coronado by Dennis Lehane
Rating: 2 Stars
I have been waiting patiently for a new book by Lehane to come out. I have read everything he has published. This was very disappointing. I shouldn’t have expected much since this consisted of a bunch of short stories and a play. The play wasn’t bad, it had an interesting plot that starts as 3 different conversations, and you discover they are related in the end. This is an example of the way Lehane writes, but he is definitely better at novels. I miss the Kenzie-Gennaro series. I hope he brings that back. This, as far as I’m concerned, was a waste of time.

Marilyn Shoemaker
The Devil and the Junior League by Linda Francis Lee
Rating: 5 Stars
I'm so glad that Linda Francis Lee is back writing. She’s a genius in telling the tale of THE DEVIL AND THE JUNIOR LEAGUE. If you love "he’s done me wrong," took my money, is having an affair, plus my high society reputation is at stake, then you've got to read this book. It's "Dallas" and "Desperate Housewives" and more, plus it's sassy, sensitive, and at times, sad.

The story takes place in a small Texas town where you're no one if you're not in the crème of high society and a member of the Jr. League. All Hell busts loose when the once beauty and homecoming queen, and high society Frede finds that her husband had an affair, runs off with all of her money and her reputation is at stake. She hires the loud, bawdy lawyer next door to find her husband and represent her. His fee is to get his "tacky" wife who wears animal print and spandex into the Jr. League.

Besides being a good read, there are lots of life's lessons to ponder. I highly recommend this book for women of all ages. I can actually picture this book being made into a movie and I can see Reese Witherspoon in the role of Frede.

Niagara Falls All Over Again by Elizabeth McCracken
Rating: 5 Stars
This story about a pair of vaudeville comedians explores a symbiotic relationship in vigorous, expressive prose. Narrator Mose Sharp relates his life from childhood in Des Moines, Iowa, to old age in Hollywood. Pierced with remorse at the accidental death of his beloved sister, Hattie, 16-year-old Mose runs away from his gentle father and five remaining sisters to join the vaudeville circuit that he and Hattie had dreamed about. Later, down on his luck, he's taken under the wing of a plump comic, Rocky Carter, and they go on to become the famous team of Carter and Sharp. Though Mose is cast as a stern professor, and Rocky as the fat and hapless fall guy, in real life Rocky takes all the credit and a larger share of their income, and Mose is endlessly forgiving of Rocky's self-destructive behavior. In depicting the mingled love and resentment felt by both men, McCracken plumbs the soul of a relationship. She also chronicles the dying years of vaudeville with a tolerant eye for its desperate exuberance, and, when Carter and Sharp move on to Hollywood, the slaphappy 1940s movie industry. As years pass, Mose finds a wife, fathers children and grows rich, but his troubled partnership with Rocky remains the core of his existence. I listened to this book on tape and loved every minute!!!

Rating: 5 Stars
This book is an accomplishment in satire.

I received an advance copy from HarperCollins's "First Look" program (you should check it out if you haven't already). Here is the review that I submitted to them --- and I meant every word:

OH PURE AND RADIANT HEART is a captivating read. Millet’s writing entertains and amuses. At the same time, the book prods, suggests, and questions in subtle and complex ways. The characters are palpable and the images real and sometimes haunting. You will laugh out load more than once; you will shed more than one tear for the mistakes of the well-intentioned; you will remember this book long after turning the last page. Check it out. An absorbing read.

Sacred Games by Vikram Chandra
Rating: 5 Stars
When I first received my ARC of SACRED GAMES, I was intimidated. The book is exactly 900 pages long. Now that I'm more than half-way through, I cay easily say that not a single page is wasted. The story of an Indian ganglord is intensified when it is intermingled with the subplot of a corrupted detective, creating a masterful tale (one that calls upon the days of the storytellers) with the heat and suspense of THE GODFATHER and the literary value of BEOWULF.

I found this novel about what happens after a fight in a restaurant parking lot to be oddly compelling. Told from the points of view of only two characters, the reader still gets to see so many more sides of the incident, some of which will leave you gasping. Shawver's voice/style is quiet, tight, and controlled; yet, it flows --- pulling a somewhat reluctant reader along for a ride we're pretty sure we're not going to like at the end but where we know we need to go to see it through.

The Nanny Diaries by Emma McLaughlin and Nicola Kraus
Rating: 5 Stars
I didn’t think this was going to be a very good book. Boy was I surprised! I loved this! It’s the story of “Nanny” who gets a job working for a rich couple in Manhatten with a 4-year-old son, Grayer. In a nutshell, the parents are terrible, Mr. X is having an affair and he is a total jerk. Mrs. X is a self-centered witch who has no clue how to raise a child, or run a household, for that matter. Nanny gets treated like dirt. But in the midst of all this is a little boy who Nanny grows to love. And when you peel back all the drama, you are left with someone who is starved for affection from his parents. Thankfully, he gets it from Nanny. But he knows it is temporary. She will leave like they all do. The writing is hilariously funny in some parts. This was a very enjoyable read. Well done.

The Stolen Child: A Novel by Keith Donohue
Rating: 5 Stars
This is one the best books I've read all summer (the other: WATER FOR ELEPHANTS). It tells the story of a 7-year- old boy who is kidnapped by hobgoblins and replaced by one of their own, while he goes to live with them. The chapters alternate with the voices of the Henry Day and Aniday. It's hard to explain, but as fantastic as the plot sounds, you soon become so wrapped up in their stories that you will ignore your own life for a while.

A very good read about Queen Esther of biblical times. I did not think I would like this book, but I enjoyed it immensely. Try it.

Blue Shoes and Happiness by Alexander McCall Smith
Rating: 3 Stars
It was somewhere in the Portguese Irregular Verbs series that McCall Smith decided to put his anti-Roman Catholic / anti-Papal bigotry into print. Here on page 209, he makes his apology of sorts through his willingness to write a sentence or two about the Pope with neutrality. McCall Smith seems to have decided to join the wider world of mutual neutrality, if not respect for each other's institutions and figureheads. It's a good thing for the readers, for here is a Precious Ramotswe story as good as the others. Granted, there is a lot of needless (as well as needed) repetition from other books in the series. Some can also make strong arguments that what MCCall Smith does is mostly to infantalize his Black characters and thus Black people. But then one must surely also grant that Precious and Mr. JLB ... and Mma Makutsi in the lead roles are very beautiful fictional people / personalities who can be beautiful role models for so many of us --- very much including their creator. If Precious can work her magic on McCall Smith, she will indeed be precious. Where there is life and fiction there is hope.

I found this to be a badly plotted, not very interesting story. Patricia Cornwell has written much, much better books.

A thought-provoking, metaphysical adventure about truth and deception that presents an interesting perspective on the world of hidden agendas and spin information. A book for the logical thinker as
