The Killing Game by Iris Johansen
Rating: 5 Stars
THE KILLING GAME is the sequel to THE FACE OF DECEPTION and is a fast-paced, chilling, page-turning, thriller that will leave you sitting breathless on the edge of your seat from the beginning to the end. This is the 2nd book in a series with characters Eve Duncan, Joe Quinn, John Logan and Sarah Patrick that were in the first book and in the books to follow.

This is the first book in a new mystery series featuring characters from Jane Austen's novels. The book tends to be a bit slow, but very much true to the period.

Marked Man by William Lashner
Rating: 5 Stars
Lashner's latest book in his series about lawyer, Victor Carol, is great. Victor awakens one morning after a night of drinking and finds the name "Chantal Adair" tattooed on his chest. Victor has no memory of how the tattoo got there and no idea who the named woman might be. His quest to find out comes together with another case of his --- the search for the gang members who stole a Rembrandt many years ago. Through it all, we are treated to Carl's highly developed sense of humor. This is a great series, one I always look forward to reading.

Georgiana: Duchess of Devonshire by Amanda Foreman
Rating: 2 Stars
I had to read this book for my book club, and it was a tough one to get through. It was too long --- I think the author should have had a more narrow scope. Is this a book about Georgiana? Or, is this a book about the political scene in England during her lifetime? One or the other, please. There is an interesting history, and Georgiana's life was definitely worth reading about. I just think the author could have done a better job.

Winning Points with the Woman in Your Life... by Jaci Rae
Rating: 5 Stars
WINNING POINTS WITH THE WOMAN IN YOUR LIFE ONE TOUCHDOWN AT A TIME is an excellent book that doesn't just appeal to men, it appeals to women (our book club uses it in our Tuesday night discussion and About.com just added it as the top six of all time dating / relationship books. It's up there with MEN ARE FROM MARS, WOMEN ARE FROM VENUS, which no one in our reading group thinks is even as good as this book.
While the title would lead you to believe it was for men, it's really for women, which I found surprising. It has a lot of information in there that gives exact language that will get results from the men in our lives. I tried it and it works. It has a lot of dating tips and a huge chapter of ways to have wonderful date nights that are even free as well as medium and expensive.
This book gives real-life examples of how men speak. She apparently took surveys of men and used their exact words to the answers of questions. Very interesting. It helped me understand a lot more.
There's also a chapter on the chemistry of love that explains why we have certain feelings, and how to get them back, as well as help our man get them back.
My husband read the book and he hates to read! He really liked it and even quizzed himself. This is an understated book that no one has really heard about, despite its standing as a #1 bestseller. Pick it up; it's worth your time. I bought mine at Amazon, but a friend of mine in the group picked it up at the Barnes and Noble by her home.

The Marcelli Bride by Susan Mallery
Rating: 5 Stars
THE MARCELLI BRIDE was one of those books you just couldn’t put down or didn’t want it to end. It’s a story about family, feelings, and passion.
This book stands alone in the Marcelli Sisters series. However, I would strongly suggest reading all of the series in order to understand this complex and loving Italian family. First in the series is THE SPARKLING ONE --- Katie’s story. Second, THE SASSY ONE, Francesca’s story and the third THE SEDUCTIVE ONE, Brenna’s story. All three books also incorporate their sister Mia, who will soon have a story as well.
THE MARCELLI BRIDE is Joe’s story, their brother they didn’t realize they had. Their parents had been young, in love, and also pregnant. Their parents felt it best for them to give Joe up for adoption even though Colleen and Marco did not want to give up their baby. In later books, one finds out that Joe’s adoptive parents died and he was raised in foster homes. Is Joe bitter? A little and weary and of course overwhelmed by this overzealous family who want to bring him into the fold, love him and, of course, have him involved in the family wine business. Yes, but Joe learns many lessons about family, responsibility, belonging and love.
Joe is a Navy Seal, strong, proud, and smart and gorgeous. He loves his job, but when the President’s daughter is kidnapped and needs a “safe house,” Joe is asked to assist her security team and take her to the family winery for safe keeping. To further go into details would ruin this story. However, it’s full of action, suspense, love so hot it burns the pages, and family dynamics that will blow your mind!
Darcy, the President’s daughter, is lovely but insecure. Her story is the one that touched me because even though she loved her beautiful sister whom she believed the President favored, she was unsure within her own family and afraid to trust and love. Joe and Darcy’s story is beautiful and moving. Have some tissues available, you’re going to need them.
Again, Susan Mallery has penned a beautiful and entertaining story, one that I personally didn’t want to end but I will read over and over again.

Angela Voorster, a high-school senior, all-star swimmer is bound for one of the ivy leagues. However, her actions at a swimming meet one day change her life and her family's for good. Each family member responds differently to Angie's psychotic break. All the characters were intriguingly written: her mother Jordana, her father Pieter, and her beloved brother Luke try to carry on with their lives. Jordana and Pieter fell in love when she was only sixteen years old. Pieter delves further into his career as a cellist when he discovers his wife has betrayed him. Luke has a devoted girlfriend and is almost done with college but comes home when his sister needs him. Angie struggles with her manic episodes and going back and forth on her meds. Their combined stories will make you lose track of time when reading. Excellent writing and interesting characters create an absorbing work of fiction!

If you like an autobiographies that are interesting and humorous, then this book is for you. Due to a generation gap, I was not particularly aware of Teri Garr, but I am now as she has written a wonderful memoir. Teri's striving for her place in the world and how she accomplished far more than most is a page-turning read. This is a heartwarming story, and again points out how people make their her worlds from their attitudes about all that happens around them. If you should have a physical affliction, this book should be of special interest.

The Memory Keeper's Daughter by Kim Edwards
Rating: 4 Stars
This is a deeply moving story about a doctor who is forced to deliver his own twins --- first, a son who is born perfectly normal, and then a daughter who has Down Syndrome. It is about the decision he must make and how his choice affects the lives of his family. THE MEMORY KEEPER'S DAUGHTER is about life, how it can take unexpected turns, and how a family survives. It was hard to put down as I kept needing to know how it was all going to end.

Winter Range by Claire Davis
Rating: 5 Stars
WINTER RANGE is a richly textured picture of rural Montana --- a ruthless land caught in the grip of a punishing winter. The sheriff, a transplanted midwesterner from a farm family himself, wonders at one point, "Why do they stay?" What ties folks to a land and a lifestyle that are rarely kind and often brutal? His wife answers in her thoughts some pages later, describing the land as a skin attached to the soles of her feet. I was transfixed by this exquisitely written story of self-destruction, revenge, love, and the struggle against an implacable environment.

A Long Way Down by Nick Hornsby
Rating: 5 Stars
The underlying message of this book is qualities of friendship, such as compassion and hope. It is fluidly written and a delight to read. Each of the characters is developed in a very appealing manner, and they search for meaning in their own lives, as well as the lives of the people they end up with on New Year's. It is a book that makes one think about others who are struggling with problems even bigger than ours and how we may reach out to give them some semblance of hope and joy.

The Perfect Dress by Mary Jane Cole
Rating: 5 Stars
A book geared toward the female baby boomer. It spans a 30-year period with songs from the times as backdrops --- a clever touch. The main character is a bridal designer and fashion-obsessed female, growing up with her old world aunt and uncle above their tailor shop just about forced into learning the ropes of the trade. She busts out of the Chicago ethnic scene and goes bravely to San Francisco, where she resides with two transgendered females, finds a lover she cannot have and discovers booze --- lots and lots of it. The hippie days are dwindling down, but the descriptions of San Francisco and the era are well done. Onto Oahu, where she marries twice, once for money, once for looks. Enter in a bout with the law and the FBI, a downward spiral with a bounce back to give one a whiplash and an exciting finish. It is well done and not the run-of-the- mill chick lit. It has it all!

Purgatory Ridge by William Kent Krueger
Rating: 4 Stars
This is another novel that has Cork O'Connor, now the former sheriff in the town of Aurora in northern Minnesota, being drawn into a showdown between the owner of a large logging operation and a group of very hostile environmentalists. Also going on is a search for truth in the sinking of an ore freighter in which the sole survivor finds evidence that the sinking, which claimed the life of his brother, was an intentional act of sabotage still being covered up. Reading this, one can almost feel the deep chill of Lake Superior, which never gives up its dead.

You Only Love Twice by Lori Wilde
Rating: 5 Stars
This is one of the best stories I have ever read. There is no profanity, or if there was, it was so well integrated into the story that it went unnoticed. The author either did in-depth research on SEALS or she is a Navy Brat/wife. The love scenes are exactly that --- love scenes. This was a mating of 2 soul mates, not just unnecessary erotica. I found only one possible inaccuracy in the story, and that was where an NCIS female leads a SEAL team; anyone who knows SEALS or Special Forces would know that they lead their own teams. This inaccuracy, though, was needed to carry the underlying suspense portion of the story. Ms. Wilde did a wonderful job of combining the romance, family, and suspense together. This is a must read for anyone who loves romance/suspense, or just an excellently written story.

This was an enjoyable read about a woman (Julie) who decides to take the classic MASTERING THE ART OF FRENCH COOKING and make every one of the 528 recipes in 365 days. As well as humorous descriptions of the cooking and procurement of ingredients (brains, truffles, beef marrow) in the neighborhood groceries of NYC, Powell also tells us about her married life, friends, job, her relationship with her mother and how her "project" affects them all.

Rating: 2 Stars
I read and loved THE DANTE CLUB enough to buy it for friends as a gift. I couldn't get the story out of my mind. It was that memorable. I couldn't wait for Pearl's newest book, but found it a disappointment. Like Quentin's contemporaries, I was given no compelling reason to get involved in his quest to find out if Poe was indeed murdered.

Love and Honor by Randall Wallace
Rating: 1 Stars
This book was chosen by our book club for this past month's selection. Normally, I finish each one, but after 125 pages, I had to put this one down. The plot was preposterous, and the sentences, short mostly beginning with "I." It was somewhat like a light romance novel, which was not what I was expecting.

Angle of Repose by Wallace Stegner
Rating: 5 Stars
I picked up this old (1971) Pulitzer Prize Winner in the used bookstore, where I volunteer. Boy, that was a lucky day, for it's been a while since I've enjoyed a novel this much. There are two parallel stories, one present and the other past (late 1800's), which merge with a family connection. Confined to a wheelchair, a retired historian sets out to write the remarkable story of his grandparents' marriage and their life on the American western frontier. The characters come alive with their foibles and strengths. The writing is first rate from the well crafted sentences to the clever meaning of the title. I truly hated for this book to end.

Anne of Green Gables series by Lucy Maud Montgomery
Rating: 4 Stars
I like to re-read this series of books about every other year or so. It's fun to go back to your childhood, to a more simpler time, and quite frankly, I like reading about Prince Edward Island! I had never read anything about the author herself until lately, and I was surprised and saddened to hear that her life was nothing like the books she wrote.

The Club Dumas by Arturo Perez-Reverte
Rating: 5 Stars
I am always compelled to read any book on which a movie is based. I think it's because I know the book will always be better, whether I liked the movie or not. Several years ago, I saw the movie The Ninth Gate starring Johnny Depp. Since this was a Roman Polanski movie, it was kind of weird and somewhat arty. At first, I did not like it. But, I watched it again when it came out on video and I have seen it several times since. It is a movie that grows on you. Anyway, I happened to see it on TV a few weeks ago and I noticed --- for the first time --- that it was based on a novel. And it was a novel that I owned! I immediately started reading it. It is an excellent book, quite different in some ways, from the movie. Perez-Reverte's writing is very rich and descriptive. I have a couple more of his books and I plan to get started on them soon.

The Bell Witch: An American Haunting by Brent Monahan
Rating: 4 Stars
I went to see the movie after I started reading the book and I have to say the book is better (big surprise!). The movie was too short and I don't think it went into enough detail. The book is really good about telling more details about the haunting, although sometimes it reads like a transcript. Of course, this is supposed to be the account of one of the witnesses --- a schoolmaster named Richard Powell --- so I guess that kind of explains it. What really makes it a compelling story is the explanation it gives for the haunting. Overall, it's a pretty good read, especially for history and/or supernatural buffs.

My Life In and Out of the Rough by John Daly
Rating: 5 Stars
This is one of the most honest, enjoyable biographies I think I have ever read. I have always been intrigued by John Daly. He actually reminds me of an old boyfriend. I heard about this book when the PGA was in Charlotte for the Wachovia, and I knew I had to read it. There is no sugar coating in this book --- John tells it like it is. I admire that. Now I want to follow him on the tour and route for him!!! I highly recommend this, especially if you are a fan of golf!

The Venus Shadow by Judith Van Gieson
Rating: 5 Stars
I have read all of Van Gieson's books and have enjoyed them all. Readers never know what is going to happen. The characters are believable and the plot is intriguing. THE VENUS SHADOW deals with the art community in Albuquerque, New Mexico. That is another reason I enjoy her work. I have visited the places Van Gieson writes about, and I think that The University of New Mexico is a stunning architectural work. The library is just as she describes it --- breathtaking! I guess I enjoyed this book because of the beautiful setting and the simple plot. THE VENUS SHADOW is one of those books that readers can pick up, lose themselves in the story, and read without guilt. I just wish Van Gieson would write more books because I've read a couple of them twice. In fact, this was the second time I'd read THE VENUS SHADOW, and it was just as enjoyable the second time as it was the first time. I'd highly recommend Van Gieson's work to anyone with a love of a good mystery and a love of New Mexico.

Julia, Finn and Masie are sisters who grow up in a crumbling Abbey that has been in the family for centuries. The story begins with the youngest, Masie, talking of her family. It then continues with Dan, a family friend and an early lover of Finn, describing what happened in more detail in that last summer. The end comes full circle when Julie ties up some loose ends. This book is full of twists and some dark secrets, and I surely hated having to put this down for real life.

A Field of Darkness by Cornelia Read
Rating: 4 Stars
A new author to watch!!! Madeline Dare gets embroiled in a murder investigation when she comes into possession of a set of dog tags that belonged to her favorite cousin, Lapthorne Townsend. These dog tags were found at the scene of a brutal double murder nineteen years ago. Does that mean her cousin is guilty, or is there a good reason why they were there? Madeline finds herself in grave danger before she finds the murderer. The first half of the book dragged, but the action picked up and I finished with great satisfaction.

I Hate Myself and Want to Die by Tom Reynolds
Rating: 5 Stars
I would give this book 10 stars if I could. The author describes 52 of the most depressing songs since teen-age car crash songs came on the scene in the early 60s. The author has an irreverent and hilarious style of writing that has me chuckling, giggling, and laughing throughout the book. Who can forget "Last Kiss" by J. Frank Wilson, or "Honey" by Bobby Goldsboro. You will want to listen to many of these songs again although the author warns you may want to throw yourself off a cliff after doing so.

By the author of THE SWALLOWS OF KABUL comes a story of a suicide bombing in Israel. An Arab doctor in the Israeli hospital that is taking care of the victims finds out that his wife is the bomber. Between Two Worlds by Zainab Salbi
Rating: 5 Stars
This memoir tells of a family that Saddam Hussein chose to be in his "inner circle." Zainib's father was Saddam's pilot. Her family and the majority of Iraq were afraid of being overheard or seen doing anything considered taboo against Saddam and his reign of terror. They felt that they lived within invisible prison walls. Very interesting insight to Iraq and its people.

In Plain Sight by C. J. Box
Rating: 5 Stars
This is the latest in a series about Wyoming Fish & Game Warden Joe Pickett. Joe is probably the most honest and hardworking man left on the planet and seems to attract the nastiest villains.
This time out, a wealthy landowner, Opal Scarlett, is missing and rather than search for her, her two sons are already fighting over dividing up her property. Is she missing? Is she dead? Why don't the "boys" seem to care?
Add an ex-con killer out to avenge his family's deaths and our hero, Warden Pickett has his hands full...as usual!
This is the 6th book in the series; I'm sure you'll want to go back and read the rest if you like suspense, the outdoors, and plenty of action.

The Wisdom of Our Fathers by Tim Russert
Rating: 3 Stars
A follow-up to Russert's 2004 book BIG RUSS AND ME about his dad. This book's genesis was the 60,000 letters and e-mails he received from readers of the first book who wanted to write about their own fathers. My own father died 2 years before the first book. Reading this brought back tears to my eyes --- both for missing and still loving my dad and how much he gave me.

The Year of Magical Thinking by Joan Didion
Rating: 3 Stars
I am actually on the fence about this book. The writing itself was disorganized. To me, it was like someone sat down and just began writing and writing from brain to pencil, without stopping until there wasn’t anything left. I feel for this woman, I really do. She obviously loved John Dunne very much. I think she had a great amount of courage to write this book, especially so soon after his death. I just can't get past the words. They flittered around the page like a butterfly you can't catch. I would capture a thought and take it in, and then she would lose me again. One final thought, however --- if I ever lose someone close to me, I may be inclined to read this book again.

And Able by Lucy Monroe
Rating: 5 Stars
AND ABLE, the conclusion of the Mercenary Trio series was sensual, sensitive, steamy, and full of Southern charm. Lucy Monroe has yet again penned a very powerful book that portrays two characters who have been drawn to each other for a long time. Claire Sharpe --- smart, witty and full of sass --- is a loner due to losing her father and mother at a young age, under difficult circumstances.
Brett Adams has been raised in a “charmed” life but is the family's black sheep. Instead of becoming the lawyer, he leaves home after high school graduation and joins the army as a Ranger, then a government agency and is an ex-mercenary. He and his partners are for hire if the cause is worthy and the price right. Brett has only loved once and she died putting her country first over their love. Brett makes a silent promise never to fall in love over her grave.
Well life plays strange tricks on people. At his partner’s wedding, he feels lust for Claire and she feels the same. Circumstances bring them together again as Brett feels the need to protect Claire when her close friend is murdered, her home is searched, and her life threatened.
Their journey and in finding each other, falling in love will just plain take your breath away. Their attraction for each other, their love making, the feelings swirling around them, plus the thrill of danger is a very powerful story and again, Lucy brings her readers to their knees.
Thanks, Lucy, for this wonderful series.

I couldn't put it down! Hains' obvious knowledge of finance and international travel were well-used in this sexy, surprising novel. I liked the way the action jumped around from one country to another, giving the reader just a taste of what one character was doing before zipping off to the next.

Beneath The Skin by Nicci French
Rating: 5 Stars
This was a book I literally could not put down. I had to force myself to turn out the light, or I would have stayed up all night reading. You have to keep reading chapter after chapter, because French keeps adding new twists into the story that make you question all of your own conclusions --- the mark of a truly great mystery writer, if you ask me. Now, maybe I'm just dense, but I had a hard time figuring out who the killer was. I found all of the women to be likeable, and I spent a lot of time trying to figure out what they had in common that would attract this lunatic. All in all, this was a slightly scary, suspenseful, and fast-paced thriller that I highly recommend. Actually, I recommend anything by Nicci French.

Sin and Vengeance by C. J. West
Rating: 5 Stars
When a young man's knee shatters while playing the sport he loves, his dreams are shattered also. Charlie Marston's life begins to descend in a wickedly evil spiral. His life suddenly changes from football star of the future to crippled but wealthy winemaker, reluctantly following in his father's footsteps. Charles Marston, the head of the family as well as his winemaking business, displays cold and distant feelings toward his only son --- feelings that up until now, Charlie didn't want to admit. Depressed and beatened down, he finds a new friend Randy Black --- a thrill-seeking bar-room brawler --- who introduces himself to the wilder side of life. Randy escorts Charlie in horrifying dilemmas that intrigue, excite, and become more precarious as each day passes. While Charlie is a willing particapant through all the distasteful, objectectionable, and harmful deeds that Randy palms and acts out, he is not without conscience. The aftermath of several terrifying events brings Charlie to weigh where his moralistic confines should be drawn. He is confronted with the consequences of several falsities that threaten himself and his parents.
The title SIN AND VENGEANCE was well chosen; it depicts the sinful ways of the chartacters and how revenge is better served cold. It is an excellently grounded thriller that is written so realistically that readers can't help but believe. They will definitely be drawn into story and into the lives of the characters. The theme of the book brings to light sin and its effects, but this thriller is full of action-packed plot and scenes of greed, lust, and the unscurpulous evil side of a person's mind and how it can effect others. I could not put this novel down and I thoroughly enjoyed the short chapters. This is an excellent read and I would, without a doubt, recommend this novel.

The Da Vinci Legacy by Lewis Perdue

The writing was pretty good, but some of the plot lines were really ridiculous. It was sort of James Bondish, where the main character gets out of situations that are apparently impossible to do so.

This book doesn't even compare with Brown's book.

Trash Talk by Dave and Lillian Brummet
Rating: 5 Stars
This book was written out of a labour of love for Mother Earth. Dave and Lillian Brummet co-wrote TRASH TALK with the hope of reaching others. By giving their thoughts, ideas, and resources to heal Earth, they share with the reader facts, percentages and studies that were so carefully tried and proven. The numbers will stun you and the immensity of these tasks gives one pause. The book has four parts filled with a wealth of knowledge for those who want to learn how they can do their part in giving back to the world around them. The three R's (Reuse, Reduce, and Recycle) has been joined by a
fourth R, Refuse --- such as refusing to buy fancy packaging because of the process
it takes to make them, which adds to our landfills. The three R's are certainly put into
motion in this fascinating book. Dave and Lillian Brummet have even gone as far as drawing diagram examples.
This is a great learning tool for youngsters to start getting involved in their ecosystem at an early age and discovering how they can do their part. I myself am very passionate about this topic and I was doing some of the same things that were mentioned, back in the 70's, but by reading this book I have learned many new things
that I can put into practice today.
I strongly recommend this book to those that have the same endearment toward Earth and can spread the word. Remember, Earth is not ours! We only borrow Her.

To Love Mercy by Frank S. Joseph
Rating: 5 Stars
Frank S. Joseph has masterfully written his first novel, TO LOVE MERCY. He does a wonderful job of making readers feel as if they are actually there. The readers are taken back to Chicago in the late 1940's, to live the lives of the characters through their eyes.
The story wraps around to young boys, one black and one white. Each are from different sides of the tracks, but their differences do not stop there. Their culture, religion, and values are entirely dissimiliar --- Steve Feinberg from Hyde Park is of the Jewish faith and Jesse " Sass " Trimble, from Bronzeville, is a Christian. The Jewish grandfather calls the black people shochers and shvartzes, which are racial, derogatory remarks, and the blacks call the caucasian whitey and honky. Even the blacks call each other crude names.
The young boys become lost in the city and experience an incredible journey, while their parents are upset and frantic, because they are together, which is unheard of. Steve and Sass learn about each other in a pure and innocent way and treat each other as equals. On the other hand, the parents of each child treat each other in an unequal fashion. The whites know their place on the social scale and the blacks do also. There's an excellent touch in the Afterward that brings forth people who actually lived in Bronzeville in the 1940's and gives them a voice.
Peppered with humour and mercy, reading this novel is an eye-opening observation on how both sides lived their daily lives. I thoroughly enjoyed this noveI that enlightened my awareness, and I strongly recommend this novel to anyone who has an interest of this time in history and to all who want an enjoyable read.

Gilleland Poetry: Storoems and Poems by Harry E. Gilleland Jr.
Rating: 5 Stars
Harry E. Gilleland Jr. has done it again. GILLELAND POETRY: STOROEMS AND POEMS is such a amazing piece of work that I was sad when the book ended. It left me wanting more. There are 195 pages of sheer enjoyment, as he pens moments and events in his life, as well as thoughts on life itself. Gilleland writes about fantasy, his canine children Rusty and Pepper, his perspective on all that surrounds him, nature --- good and bad, war, people, inner turmoil, victory, and especially the loving thoughts of his wife, Linda, and how he cherishes her.
Each and every page holds a treasure and lesson of life. He made me laugh, giggle, ponder, and he definitely caused me to wipe several tears away because some of his poems seemed as though they were reflections of my life. He touched my mind as well as my heart.
If I were to pick favorites from his pages, it would be very difficult, but I would list "Wasted Life," "Family Tradition," "One Night Early In September," "Angel On Earth," and "A Friend No Longer," in which he actually asks the reader a thought-provoking question. I have many more I could list, but I will leave it to readers to find their own. I can now place his book on my bookshelf where it rightfully belongs, alongside other prestigous authors. It was a fabulous read and I strongly recommend this collection of poetry to everyone.

Unearthly Companion by Ilona Hegedus
Rating: 5 Stars
Upon reading Ilona Hegedus' collection of poetry in her book, UNEARTHLY COMPANION, I sense worlds that are dark and foreboding. Other words I'd would use to describe it is sinister or macabre. The title in itself suggests that the book is a combination of futuristic worlds, words from the grave, demonic entities and the very sad, but true evil side of mankind. I would categorize most of the poems in this book as disturbing, to absolutly evil. Definitely not a book that I would recommend to read to children!
In the book, however, there are light tones, such as "Healer" and "Tree" that speak of protection, warmth, music, and magic.
Other poems center on the computer and the internet, and the addiction it can cause, such as "Clarissa" and "Ruler."
The poems that weren't chilling or gruesome were shadowed with melancholy and saddness, as in "Same Place," "Dancer," and "Frozen City."
The poem I favoured and found to be emotionally moving was "Healer," which shows the side of mankind that can be loving and caring. It also shows that humans can be giving and selfless with little effort when they try.
Hegedus's pieces are very well written, and the reader can feel the rhyhthmic beat and mode of each poem. I felt that the majority of the poems were depressing, but her skills as a poet are flawless. "Clarissa" has been nominated for James B. Baker Award in the Best Poem for 2005 category. Also, "Haunted House" is nominated for Best Poem of Year, 2005 at Muses Review.
If you enjoy macabre and dark fantasy, then I would definitely recommend this book.

White Lightning Road by Harry E. Gilleland Jr.
Rating: 5 Stars
Here is a wonderfully written mystery/romance set in rural northern Louisiana. Harry E. Gilleland Jr. takes you into the lives of two young women who are best friends, Jennifer James and Sally Jeffers. While growing up, each were urban teenagers whose famiies moved to White Lightning Road. They both longed for the life of the big city, and upon graduation, they returned to the city life they loved.
Jennifer is called back to White Lightning Road due to family tragedy, in which she loses both parents to a car accident caused by a drunk driver. As she returns to the family homestead to tie up loose legal ends, she encounters her infamous neighbour, Mr. Garrot --- a suspected murderer.
With her stress levels high and her emotional levels low, she becomes involved with Mr. Garrot in a most unusual way. Her heart tells her yes, but her head tells her no, and her life begins to weave more turmoil and confusion.
She turns to her best friend, Sally, for support. As a single mom with a five-year-old son, she, too, experiences ups and downs in life that she shares with Jennifer. Sally wonders what the future holds for her.
I found this book very enjoyable and hard to put down. I strongly recommend it to those who want to escape their lives for a while and peek into the lives of the characters on White Lightning Road. For those who like a good mystery, this is an exceptional book. I found it to be an excellent read.

Towards Understanding by Lillian Brummet
Rating: 5 Stars
Let me begin by saying that Lillian Brummet yanked on the very strings of my heart. In her book TOWARDS UNDERSTANDING, every poem, every verse, and every word she penned was a representation of periods in my life. I have lived and felt the very words she has written, and I am fifty four years of age. I am speculating that she is in her early thirties, and to have journeyed life’s paths and endured such raw, heart-wrenching experiences so early in life would make the strongest tremble.
Through her poetry, the words reach out to readers, offering solace, peace, and the feeling that they are not alone. With each poem there is a marking of years, in turn, showing growth --- not only as a poetess, but also as a young woman. As she pours her life out onto paper, she fights her inner demons, and learns to love herself and gets to know who she is inside; and through all the trials and tribulations, she finds freedom. Her poems brought me to tears as I sobbed, remembering my years that have swiftly passed --- the good, the bad and sometimes ugly. As I read her book, there was a definite connection. One can tell by reading her work that she has developed into an independent and strong woman, and is the ideal role model for young men and women. Her poems are filled with truth and honesty and she has bared her life to us, the readers.
As an artist paints with color, Lillian writes with words the raw emotions of love, hate, abuse, anger, friendship. Learning to deal with these emotions has made her the woman she is today. She has a voice that her readers will surely find comfort in. I thoroughly enjoyed each and every poem I read and I strongly recommend her book of poetry.

Bob The Dragon Slayer by Harry E. Gilleland, Jr.
Rating: 5 Stars
This whimsical novella written by Harry E. Gilleland, Jr. is an excellent read for young and old alike. It begins in the home of the McClair family for the Thanksgiving Day holiday. All have just settled down after enjoying a spectacular meal, the men in their room watching the television, while the women and children join their great grandfather by the warm fireside as the flames flicker and dance. One of the great-grandchildren asks if he will tell them a story, like he did when they were younger. So, he tells them a story that his grandmother told him when he was a boy.
There are eighteen short chapters, but just enough to grab the imagination and keep the children's attention. BOB THE DRAGON SLAYER tells of kings, knights, dragons, common folk, how all people should be treated equal, good vs. evil, trust, faith, friendship and love. In reading this charming book, I found lessons that could be taught to children from an early age. This book could start the beginnings of a good foundation from which they can build good morals and understanding. Once I started to read the book, I couldn't put it down until I finished it. Mr. Harry E. Gilleland Jr. did a wonderful job on his first novella and I enjoyed it immensely. I recommend this book for all to read.

I have all the books in the Jack Reacher series and I loved them all. This one, while not the best, is very interesting and finally gets him overseas. His characters are always interesting and the plot always changes when you least expect it. I love this series. It took me about twelve hours to finish this 400-page book.

This sixth book in the outstanding series marks the end of the simple and carefree days at Hogwarts and takes us on a darker and more sinister ride into a war zone with good pitted against evil. The Five People You Meet in Heaven by Mitch Albom
Rating: 5 Stars
While perhaps not exactly a book that would be considered scripturally sound from a Biblical standpoint, this is enjoyable tale of a man's journey from life to a sudden death. After Eddie dies, he meets five people who are able to explain why certain things happened in his life --- even things he knew nothing about, but which had a profound affect on his life.

The Hard Way by Lee Child
Rating: 4 Stars
THE HARD WAY is another good read from Lee Child. You get to think along with Jack Reacher as he figures out a kidnapping in New York and all that goes with it. The workings of his mind, his uncanny ability to know the time without a watch, and the people that he trusts to help him are vintage Lee Child.

One of the better Chick Lit Red Dress Ink books I have read in a long time. I enjoyed it very much. Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close by Jonathan Safran Foer
Rating: 4 Stars
Oskar is a precocious 8-year-old boy who feels desperate and lonely after his father was killed in the Twin Towers. He goes on a quest throughout New York to find the answer to one last clue he found after his father’s death…. a key, but to what lock? Along the way his story intertwines with that of the people he meets. A sweet story that is excellent on tape because of the great narrator. He’s a brilliant child, but seems to have touches of autism and is paralyzed by some simple things in life. The reader really cares about the well-being of the little boy. The jacket says it is being made into a major motion picture.
If you enjoyed THE CURIOUS INCIDENT OF THE DOG IN THE NIGHT-TIME by Mark Haddon, then you will enjoy this book too.

Lady by Thomas Tryon
Rating: 4 Stars
I found this 1974 novel at a church sale and was reminded of the great writing that came from writers prior to some of the current crop. Many years ago I enjoyed HARVEST HOME by Tryon. He’s a wordsmith and great storyteller who made me look forward to each new chapter. It’s a coming of age story about a little boy who has a crush on the beautiful lady who lives across the green. It continues until the boy becomes a man and secrets of the townspeople are slowly unfolded like the petals of a rose. It’s worth checking your library shelves for this older novel. I am thrilled when I find a great story that is well written with an excellent plot and character/story development and sleazy tactics like smut and vulgarity aren’t thrown in to make up for the lack of writing skills.

Promise Me by Harlan Coben
Rating: 5 Stars
The intrigue of two disappearances of two 18-year-old girls who each accessed the same ATM machine was a fascinating one. The twists and turns were, at the same time, predictable and surprising as the story unfolds. It is a book that is hard to put down once started. I woke up after reading a few chapters before going to bed to find my mind in the same place as I awakened, needing to read on to verify my suspicions and finally, to get to the end of the book. Only then did I want another chapter.

Rating: 5 Stars
This is a story set in England that enters the world of cloning. But its subtleties and descriptive narrative takes you into the world of an English boarding school and brings you slowly into the realization that it is not an ordinary place. The style of writing and ways that Ishiguro brings you into the mind and watchful interpretations of Kathy H. make this book a very thought-provoking read.

The Girls by Lori Lansens

I didn't want to put this novel down, nor did I want it to end. The novel is about two sisters who are conjoined twins ("Siamese Twins"). The story of their upbringing and own individual personalities and likes/dislikes and stories is told in both voices. This is truly one of the best books I have read this year --- the author's insight into human emotions, and the way she conveys them to the reader in words is simply remarkable --- I haven't read such since Lolly Winston's GOOD GRIEF.

Passing on the Comfort by Lynn Kaplanian-Buller and An Keuning-Tichelaar
Rating: 5 Stars
PASSING ON COMFORT: THE WAR, THE QUILTS AND THE WOMEN WHO MADE A DIFFERENCE is heart-warming, touching and worth the read even if you aren't into quilts. This book gave me insight into World War II from the perspective of someone in the Netherlands who was living under the German occupation. It tells the story of how she (An) coped day by day, as well as shares personal insight into her faith, her family and her country. Because this story is told from the heart of a woman who lived through the terror of the war, intertwined with the story of a woman whose heart was searching (Lynn), it truly speaks to the reader. I came away from this book changed deep inside, and with a strong desire to make a lasting difference with my life.
The quilts that are part of this story were all made by Mennonites in Canada and the United States, and are currently traveling around the US and Canada. Perhaps they will be somewhere near you. If so, I encourage you to go, see, and learn. I warn you ahead of time to take tissues and be prepared to leave the exhibit changed in your heart.
