BRAIN DROPPINGS by George Carlin, 5 stars
NAPALM AND SILLY PUTTY by George Carlin, 5 stars
As always Carlin provides a good laugh with both of his books as he does on stage and on TV.

THE LAST TIME THEY MET by Anita Shreve, 4 stars

GDurisin@aol.com
A WALK TO REMEMBER by Nicholas Sparks, 2 stars
A 57-year-old man recalls the year his life was changed by his falling in love. A selection for our Mother-Daughter book club, and one my daughter enjoyed a bit more than I did.
THE BLUE NOWHERE by Jeffery Deaver, 5 stars
This one kept me up reading till 2 AM, it was so good. Deaver does his usual stellar job of keeping the suspense going right to the end in this novel about a killer who’s turned his world into one giant computer game, stalking potential victims via an intrusive computer virus that gives him access to everything stored on or accessed by their home computer.
BAD GIRL CREEK by Jo-Ann Mapson, 4 stars
Confined to a wheelchair due to spina bifida, Phoebe’s been taken care of all her life. When at age 38 she inherits a farm unexpectedly from her much-loved Aunt Sadie, it’s time for Phoebe to begin to take care of herself, and she does, bringing together an unusual assortment of down-on-their-luck women to create a special family that brings the farm back to life. This is reportedly the first in a trilogy, and I look forward eagerly to the next installment.

LOSING JULIA by Jonathan Hull, 4 stars

Lucky4750@aol.com
FROM THE HEART by Nora Roberts, 5 stars
Three of Robert's favorite novels: Tonight and Always, A Matter of Choice, and Endings and Beginnings all in one book.
INDEPENDENT WIFE by Linda Howard, 4 stars
Interesting read about a wife who becomes the "Independent" woman her husband wanted her to be before he walked out. She's back, better then ever in his life and has no desire to be with him anymore. Tables are turned. Good read.
FAULT LINES by Anne Rivers Siddons, 4 stars

Joyfuljess@aol.com
REBECCA by Daphne Du Maurier, 3 stars
I realize that this book is a "classic" and although I found the story engrossing, it was hard for me to sympathize with the main character in this book. First of all, the author never tells you her first name, which I hate. Second of all, she is such a wimp! I know this book was written in the 1930's, but even Jane Austen gave her characters backbone! I cannot relate to a person who is so plainly beige. It was a good read, but I was frustrated by it.
OPEN HOUSE by Elizabeth Berg, 5 stars
A wonderful book. I loved the story and the people involved and was sorry for it to be over.
THE VENDETTA DEFENSE by Lisa Scottoline 5 stars
Lisa Scottoline does a superb job of weaving the past and present together to form a book that gives you an understanding of what a "vendetta" really means. Excellent book.
SCENE OF THE CRIME by Jill McGown 4 stars
Another Lloyd and Hill mystery installment. Jill McGown always delivers an excellent book that is well thought out. This book had so many twists and turns, I was truly surprised when "who done it" was revealed! I highly recommend any from this series.

WHILE I WAS GONE by Sue Miller, 4 stars
This book was compelling, thought-provoking. Any woman could empathize with the main character, yet be dismayed and saddened and disgusted by her at the same time. The story at times was personally disturbing causing a love/hate feeling toward the main character. But all of us have a past and can relate to the consequences of revisiting certain times in our younger lives. Sue Miller describes this with depth and feeling.

THE GIVER by Lois Lowry, 5 stars
At the age of ten, my forth grade teacher read this book to my class and me. The following year, my new fifth grade teacher read it to us. After the second time, I fell in love with it, and my mom bought it for me. I read it at least once a year. I am now sixteen, and if I had not read the book in class I do not think I would be reading books today. A book about giving away innocence and childhood to grow up soon and trying to get over emotion. The young boy, Jonas can relate to a lot of kids growing up today. It surprises you in every sentence you read. It is a must have.

THE BEAR WENT OVER THE MOUNTAIN by William Kotzwinkle, 4 stars
(author of E.T.) A whimsical satire/fable about humankind and its follies. Reminds me of the movie "Being There" starring Peter Sellers.
EMPIRE FALLS by Richard Russo, 4 stars
Great character development, a wonderful story that hooks you right from the first page.

THE PROGRAM by Stephen White, 5 Stars
Just finished this book and loved it. It started out a little slow in the first two or three chapters, but picked up the pace from there. It is the latest in the Dr. Alan Gregory series and does keep the reader on the edge of your seat. I have only read one other book in this series, but have the first one on my reading stack.

MR. AND MRS. BO JO JONES by Ann Head, 5 stars
This may be an old book, but it is timeless. A must read for teenagers as well as adults.
CADILLAC JUKEBOX by James Lee Burke, 5 stars
A whodunnit thriller. Keeps you jumping from page to page.
THE BRETHREN by John Grisham, 3.5 stars
It is slow reading through the first half of the book and picks up pace for the last half.
SUMMER SISTERS by Judy Blume, 5 stars
This is definitely a great summer book. Especially if you're near a beach; its setting takes place on a beach.

NO FUTURE WITHOUT FORGIVENESS by Desmond Tutu, 4 stars
This book tells of the Truth And Reconciliation Commission of South Africa and Archbishop Tutu's role as its chairman. This great humanitarian played a very large role in the abolishment of Aparthied in South Africa. Here he reflects on the hearings and confessions that recognize the horrors people can inflict upon one another. He shows readers how to move forward with honesty and compassion to build a more humane world.
BREACH OF PROMISE by Perri O'Shaughnessy, 5 stars
The fourth of the Nina Reilly books. Nina is an attorney at Lake Tahoe. In this story her client has just been tossed out of her house by her "husband." Turns out they were never married, and their joint holdings are worth more than 200 million dollars. Very well done courtroom drama, likeable characters and a real surprise ending. Perri O'Shaughnessy is the pen name for sisters Pamela and Mary O'Shaughnessy.

THE PRAYER OF JABEZ by Wilkinson, 5 stars
SECRET OF THE VINE by Wilkinson, 5 stars
I love this quote from the book: "Beliefs are hard to spot. For one thing, to decide what we believe we tend to listen to what we say instead of watching what we do. For another, we want the convenience our wrong beliefs afford so much that we convince ourselves we must be right."
JIM THE BOY: A Novel by Tony Earley, 4 stars
A little too sweet and contrived.

THE SHIRT OFF HIS BACK by Parry A. Brown, 5 stars
An engaging book filled with humor, true friendship, love and feel-good romance. I commend author, Parry Brown, not only for writing an awesome story about a man who is obviously a good son, a wonderful brother, and true best friend; but for writing a story about a black man who is a loving dedicated single parent. This was a fun book to read . . . and one that I would gladly read again and again!

FEAST OF LOVE by Charles Baxter, 4 stars
Well-written, engrossing --- especially for those of us who live in Ann Arbor, the setting of the book.

BAG OF BONES by Stephen King, 5 stars
CHOSEN PREY by John Sandford, 4 stars

1ST TO DIE by James Patterson, 4 stars
This book was so wonderful. It kept me on the edge of my seat the entire time. I could not put it down. I would encourage anyone with a mature mind to read this book. Patterson includes excitement, romance, and tragedy in all of his novels. He is a wonderful author, and a very talented person.
A LOST LADY by Willa Cather, 4 stars
This novel shows how important the pioneer movement was for some people. Mrs. Forrester of the novel is a fascinating woman, and Neil is her admirer. Although Neil does not know too much about her, he envies her every move, until he discovers the truth. This novel is simple to read, and very touching.

FAY by Larry Brown, 5 stars
After reading this book, and sad that it ended, I went straight to the library to grab anything I could find that he wrote. Perhaps this author's variety of life experiences has contributed to his insight into human behavior.

THE LOTTIE PROJECT by Jacqueline Wilson, 4 stars
This book is a very good book. It is about a girl named Charlie, who is growing up and trying to deal with her problems. Charlie's world is changing- for the worse. Her new teacher refuses to call her anything but Charlotte.[BLECH] And forces her to sit next to Jamie Edwards, the most revolting, stuck-up, horrible boy in the whole class. [yuck] And assigns her a dreary project on the Victorian period. [UGH] But clever Charlie isn't so easily beaten. Instead of writing a boring old book report, she creates a diary for Lottie, a nursemaid, and history suddenly comes to life!!

VISIONS: Book One by K.C. Miller, 4 stars
Set in Alaska, this suspenseful cliffhanger tells how a small group of people survive the aftermath of computer and smallpox viruses that spread world wide quickly. Although graphic at times, the story is action packed and the reader doesn't know what will happen next. This book also uses characters that seem almost real, and that combined with the unique Alaska setting make the book exciting.
