DECK THE HALLS
by Mary Higgins Clark and Carol Higgins Clark, 5 stars
True to form, the Clarks plunge you right into the midst of the action. Not only did mother and daughter work together on this mystery, but so do two of their best-known and loved characters: Regan Reilly and Alvirah Meehan.
INSOMNIA by Stephen King
Stephen King gives us an interesting "take" on insomnia -- what if it has a purpose, one beyond our wildest imaginings? A long read, but if you can't sleep, pick up this book and try reading it "aura-ly".

CAUGHT DEAD IN PHILADELPHIA by Gillian Roberts, 5 stars
I'D RATHER BE IN PHILADELPHIA by Gillian Roberts, 5 stars
HOW I SPENT MY SUMMER VACATION by Gillian Roberts, 5 stars
A Mystery series featuring Amanda Pepper, English teacher at a Philadalphia prep school, and her love interest C.K. McKenzie, a very literate Southern police officer. The books are witty, wry, engaging, make me laugh out loud, particularly the dead-on comments on education. Particularly amusing for those in the educational field. The audio tapes which were done on some of the books are read by a wonderful woman who does several different voices very convincingly

TODAY I AM A BOY by David Hays, 2 stars
(Non-Fiction) A 66-year-old man studies for his bar mitzvah in a year-long class with 12 year olds and learns much about himself.
THE FAMILY ORCHARD by Nomi Eve, 5 stars
(Fiction) Parallel stories written by a father and daughter (both fictional) of their Jewish family history ranging from Eastern Europe to Israel and the U.S. An amazing story and great piece of writing.
MASTERSON by Richard S. Wheeler, 5 stars
(Fiction) A fictional story of Bat Masterson, who in his latter years was a journalist in N.Y. He and wife Emma take a trip back west to Dodge City, Los Angeles and Denver in an effort to come to terms with his unfounded reputation as a man who killed 26 people. Great, warm characters permeate the entire book, which makes it eminently readable.
THE RECTOR OF JUSTIN by Louis Auchincloss, 4 stars
(Fiction) The story of one man - the founder of a religious boy's school - as told by his associates. He is, of course, seen differently by all. Book was published in the '60s.
POSTVILLE - A CLASH OF CULTURES IN HEARTLAND AMERICA by Stephen G. Bloom, 4 stars
(Non-Fiction) A large group of Lubavitcher Hassidim set up residence in a small Iowa town. Their business endeavor (operating a slaughterhouse) revives the town economically but up-ends the status quo of the little farmland community. It is a very interesting book!

Krebsman

HANNIBAL by Thomas Harris, 1 star
I just finished the book, and while I was thrilled and engaged in his first three novels, this one left me with something to desire. I was expecting a great follow-up to THE SILENCE OF THE LAMBS, and what I got, in my opinion, was a cop out. Harris seems to have ended this book with the exact notion that he was going to write another sequel. He didn't seem to put much thought into this one, and he ruined the characters in a way that can't be repaired. I would give this book one star and say only read if you REALLY like Harris, but if you loved Silence, and don't want to be turned off, don't read this one.
SKINNY LEGS AND ALL Tom Robbins, 4 stars
I have read most of Robbins works, and this novel is in line with the rest. It is witty, fast paced, and full of sexual innuendo. If you like Robbins work, then this is a book to read. I'm not all the way through it yet, but it has caught my attention fast.
DUNE by Frank Herbert, 5 stars
This was my first read in the series, and I loved it. If you like science fiction than this is definitely the novel for you.
