Here are comments from our group of Advance Readers about Gregg Olsen's HEART OF ICE.
Jan from Bloomington, MN
Have you previously read a book by Gregg Olsen?
No.
What other suspense/thriller authors do you usually read?
James Patterson, Stuart Woods, Patricia Cornwell, Mary Higgins Clark, J. D. Robb, Ralph McInerney, Kathy Reichs, Linda Fairstein and Jeffery Deaver.
What did you think of HEART OF ICE?
I thought it was great; he did a great job getting the reader to know the characters. I was grabbed from the beginning and then about the time it seemed pretty clear who did it, the roller coaster of twists and turns begins again and it ends up being someone you never expected.
Would you ever read a future book by Gregg Olsen?
Yes, I've already requested a couple through our library.
JaneAnn from Horseshoe Bend, AR
Have you previously read a book by Gregg Olsen?
No, I've never read Gregg Olsen. Not my usual genre, but really enjoyed his book and will be looking for more.
What did you think of HEART OF ICE?
I read Erica Spindler, Lisa Jackson, and maybe another one or two authors who are not coming to mind at the moment. As you see, they are all women, and they seem to keep out the dry, slow part of explaining every little bit of what's going on (it's dry and uninteresting), and stay with the story and characters. That’s what Gregg did, and it made his book a good read. It was catching from page one to the surprise ending, although I can't say what it is --- it would ruin it for other readers. I was puzzled for a while, but it all ties up in the end.

What did you think of HEART OF ICE?
I thought it was a great book. It gave me some insight into how childhood sex abuse can sometimes lead to problems in adulthood. This had a good plot and I was very surprised to learn who killed Mandy Crawford, and I was in suspense at the end when Jenna's life was threatened. Excellent book!
Would you ever read a future book by Gregg Olsen?
I definitely will.

I thought it was quite good --- very suspenseful, and a "real page-turner!" You really care about the lead character, Emily Kenyon, and the fact that there are really two stories going on makes things very interesting.

I've already purchased his previous novel, A COLD DARK PLACE.

Have you previously read a book by Gregg Olsen?
No, I have not read a book by Gregg Olsen before. I had not heard of his books until reading about this contest.
When you sent an e-mail saying I had won, I was so excited! I perused Gregg's website and saw he was an accomplished true crime writer who has now crossed over to fiction. When I looked at his books I caught a glimpse, quite accidentally (because I don't like to know ahead of time what the story is about), that the main character in HEART OF ICE (Emily Kenyon) was also in A COLD DARK PLACE. I had to purchase it and read it first before HEART OF ICE just to keep the reading order. I started it on Thursday morning, finished on Friday and started HEART OF ICE. I am very happy I did! I've enjoyed both of these books and look forward to reading the rest of his work, of which I have picked up 2 more.
What other suspense/thriller authors do you usually read?
I read an array of suspense/thriller authors. To name a few: Lee Child, Harlan Coben, Lisa Scottoline, Lisa Gardner, Lisa Jackson, Nancy Bush, John Grisham, Robert Crais and T. Jefferson Parker, Iris Johansen and Erica Spindler.
What did you think of HEART OF ICE?
I thought HEART OF ICE was a good story. Although it is considered a sequel with the return of Emily, Jenna and Chris (and all the characters of A COLD DARK PLACE), it definitely stands on its own!
It was intriguing how Olsen kept both suspense situations moving at the same time, pointing the suspicion of Mandy's murderer around. This book did keep you guessing and wanting to find out if you were, in fact, correct! I found myself feeling sorry for the circumstances that some of the characters were experiencing.
Would you ever read a future book by Gregg Olsen?
Yes, I would read a future book by Gregg Olsen. I can't bring myself to read the "teaser" in the back of his upcoming book, just because I want to be surprised! He does leave open the fact that Emily and Chris may return [in future books]....

What did you think of HEART OF ICE?
It kept me reading until the end, which had an interesting twist. I enjoyed the main characters a lot, but often, the transitions were abrupt and confusing. The storyline was interesting and compelling, but the investigation of the case was not well researched. In the beginning, I got distracted by all the references to foods Emily did not like. There were way too many pages spent on the evil past and animal torture of one of the characters. I think the author does have potential that is not fully developed.
Would you ever read a future book by Gregg Olsen?
I am not sure. I did like Emily's character, so I might try another one if she were in it.
