Joseph Finder

Fast Facts:

  • Joseph was born in Chicago, but spent much of his early childhood in Afghanistan and the Philippines. He and his family later moved to Bellingham, Washington, and then to Albany, New York, where he attended high school.

  • Joseph majored in Russian studies at Yale University, and graduated summa cum laude and Phi Beta Kappa. He also earned his Master's Degree at the Harvard Russian Research Center and later taught on the Harvard faculty.

  • Joseph published his first book, RED CARPET: The Connection Between the Kremlin and America's Most Powerful Businessmen in 1983, when he was only 24 years old. The nonfiction work was a controversial expose about multi-millionaire Dr. Armand Hammer's ties to Soviet intelligence. Though the book's assertions were confirmed after the fall of the Soviet Union, it is no longer in print, due to threats of a libel suit.

  • While doing research for RED CARPET, Joseph found that his confidential sources were more willing to reveal classified information to him as a novelist --- rather than as a journalist or academic. So, he fictionalized the events and circumstances discussed in RED CARPET in his debut novel, THE MOSCOW CLUB.

  • Joseph's 1998 novel, HIGH CRIMES, was adapted for the big screen, and starred Ashley Judd and Morgan Freeman in 2002.

  • Joseph's most commercially and critically successful book to date, PARANOIA, is his first book to use the corporate world as a setting for crime fiction, a convention for which he is best known today.

  • Joseph has also written articles on espionage and international affairs relations for The New York Times, Forbes Magazine, Publishers Weekly, The Washington Post, and The New Republic.

  • Joseph currently lives in Boston with his wife and daughter. He's a fan of the Red Sox.
