Here are comments from our group of Advance Readers about Beverly Barton's THE DYING GAME.
Anne from Evanston, IL
Have you previously read a book by Beverly Barton?
I have previously read a couple of her romances. I thought I'd read some suspense as well, but don't think so after reading THE DYING GAME.
What other romantic suspense authors do you read?
A partial list of romantic suspense authors I read are: J. D. Robb/Nora Roberts, Jayne Ann Krentz, Christine Feehan, Stella Cameron, Linda Howard, Lisa Jackson, Evelyn Vaughn, J. R. Ward, Heather Graham and Carla Neggers.
What did you think of THE DYING GAME?
I really enjoyed THE DYING GAME. It was a fast read without much graphic violence. Yeah, cutting off body parts is gross, but there wasn't much detail. I don't like suspense books that make me feel bad reading them. It could have used a little more romance, though. I'm looking forward to finding out about Griff's past in her next book.
Would you ever read a future book by Beverly Barton?
Yes, I would read another book by Beverly Barton. Thanks for letting me participate!
April from Leicester, MA
Have you previously read a book by Beverly Barton?
No, I have not.
What other romantic suspense authors do you read?
Sandra Brown, Iris Johansen and Christianne Heggan.
What did you think of THE DYING GAME?
I really enjoyed this book, although I was confused at the beginning by the lack of serious character development until I realized that these are series characters (or, at the very least, [Barton] has written about them before). The other thing I really liked about this book is that it focused more on the suspense aspect of the story, rather than the romantic aspect. The only thing I don't like about romantic suspense novels is when the author pulls you out of the mystery to drop you instead into a long, drawn-out sex scene. I was glad to see that Beverly Barton did not do this in THE DYING GAME.
Would you ever read a future book by Beverly Barton?
Absolutely, although I think I would prefer to go back and read her previous novels that deal with the same characters.
BethAnn from Bakersfield, CA

What other romantic suspense authors do you read?
Catherine Coulter, Sandra Brown, J. D. Robb, Nora Roberts, Lisa Jackson, Lynn Erickson, Kay Hooper, Linda Howard, Iris Johansen, Jayne Ann Krentz, Elizabeth Lowell, Karen Robards, Sharon Sala and Maggie Shayne.
What did you think of THE DYING GAME?
I was immediately hooked. This page turner kept me up at night, desperate to find out what would happen next. [The story is told] through the eyes of the victims (such terror), the eyes of the victims' surviving family members (such grief and pain), and the eyes of the law enforcement (such dedication). Barton has an incredible gift. You want to jump right in and help with the hunt for the suspect. Her characters are rich and deep. Your need to help Judd is strong, and Lindsey's love for him comes right through the pages. I'm a reader because of authors like Barton. I regret not reading her before and missing the earlier [installments] of this series. For sure, THE DYING GAME is a book that will remain on your bookshelf for future re-readings.
Would you ever read a future book by Beverly Barton?
For sure! I've already put several on hold at my local library.

No, this is the first one.
What other romantic suspense authors do you read?
Actually, I read quite a bit of suspense, but not romantic suspense. My most-read suspense writers include Michael Connelly, Harlan Coben, Dan Brown, Dean Koontz, Thomas Harris and Lisa See.

I enjoyed the book. It moved quickly, had strong character development, and included the "surprises" that one expects in a suspense novel.

Mary Higgins Clark, Catherine Coulter, Nora Roberts, Sandra Brown, James Patterson and Kay Hooper.
What did you think of THE DYING GAME?
Intense and action packed; definitely a weekend book. It grabbed me right from the start [and was hard to put down]. I was right in there with Lindsay, Griff and Judd, trying to catch the killers. I plan on being there for the next book in trying to get the Game Hunter Killer.
Would you ever read a future book by Beverly Barton?
Yes. I plan on picking one for my next book club choice. Thanks again to everyone.
Jackie from La Mesa, CA
Have you previously read a book by Beverly Barton?
This is the first book I've read by Beverly Barton.
What other romantic suspense authors do you read?
Some of the other romantic suspense authors I've read are Lisa Jackson, Jayne Ann Krentz, Sandra Brown and Sheri Whitefeather.
What did you think of THE DYING GAME?
Even though I found the murder scenes gruesome and very graphic, I liked the story of Judd and Lindsay. At times, I couldn't put the book down because I wanted to see what was going to happen next. Miss Barton is a master of putting the reader in her victims' shoes with such strong emotion. I plan to read her next book because one of my favorite characters in this story was the Private Investigator Griff, and I'm anxious to find out what happened to him in the past. All in all, I enjoyed reading this and am sending it to my sister in Arizona, who is an avid reader of all kinds of books. Thanks for letting me have the opportunity to read this book.
JD from Ocala, FL
Have you previously read a book by Beverly Barton?
This is my first book by Beverly Barton
What other romantic suspense authors do you read?
Lisa Gardner, Iris Johansen, Tami Hoag and Stuart Woods are a few of my favorite romantic suspense authors.
What did you think of THE DYING GAME?
I chilled with the details of the murders, and yet the complexity of this thriller wouldn't allow me to put it down. There were intense romantic interludes, with terrifying plots --- everything that keeps a good author on a high note.
Would you ever read a future book by Beverly Barton?
I will be purchasing more of Beverly Barton's novels.
Jennifer from Avon, IN
Have you previously read a book by Beverly Barton?
No.
What other romantic suspense authors do you read?
James Patterson.
What did you think of THE DYING GAME?
I thoroughly enjoyed the book. It was intense from beginning to end. The author kept me wanting more; I couldn't wait to see what would happen next. At times, however, the plot line reminded me of a previous novel that I have read. It was captivating, but not necessarily a fresh and new storyline.
Would you ever read a future book by Beverly Barton?
Quite possibly.
Jonathan from Vienna, VA
Have you previously read a book by Beverly Barton?
No.
What other romantic suspense authors do you read?
I don’t usually read romantic suspense. I do read many mysteries and suspense novels (recently, by David Morrell and Stephen King).
What did you think of THE DYING GAME?
The book had an absorbing plot with enough twists to keep me hooked. It was unusual in that the lead characters were less interesting or likeable than the supporting cast. Nonetheless, the book was still engaging and made you care about the characters. I am definitely looking forward to the sequel.
Would you ever read a future book by Beverly Barton?
Yes.
Judy from Higley, AZ
Have you previously read a book by Beverly Barton?
This is the first book by Ms. Barton that I have read.
What other romantic suspense authors do you read?
Nora Roberts/J. D. Robb, Lisa Jackson, and Catherine Coulter.
What did you think of THE DYING GAME?
I enjoyed it very much. The characters were well drawn and either very likable --- or at least easy to empathize with --- or totally despicable. The romantic element was well woven within the major plot of finding a vicious serial killer. Not having read [Barton's] other books, I had no knowledge of the characters that [played secondary roles] in previous novels; yet, within this stand-alone book, I felt I knew who was whom, and maybe had an inkling of how they might have gotten to be who they are now. Trying to figure out how Griff, Sanders, and Yvette came to be intertwined was part of the enjoyment. I read the book in two nights, staying up late to finish it, hoping the killer would be caught and the major characters would find their lives less tortured by their pasts. The ending was very taut, and now I will anxiously await the next book to fill in the gaps and confirm my suspicions of their pasts.
Would you ever read a future book by Beverly Barton?
Yes, and I'm going to read some of her previous books also.
Leah from Baltimore, MD
Have you previously read a book by Beverly Barton?
No. I have not picked up another book by Beverly Barton, but plan to now that I have read THE DYING GAME.
What other romantic suspense authors do you read?
I read Nora Roberts, Catherine Coulter, Linda Howard, Andrea Kane, Sandra Brown and Suzanne Brockman.
What did you think of THE DYING GAME?
I loved it. The characters were compelling. I can't wait to read further adventures of Griffin Powell. Beverly Barton made the grief and trauma that Judd felt come alive. I could feel his pain and, despite his treatment of her, could understand why Lindsay didn't leave him. I had a hard time putting this book down to do other things. It grabbed me from the first page and although I thought I had it figured out, the villain was ambiguous enough to keep me guessing.
Would you ever read a future book by Beverly Barton?
Yes! I have to find out what the mystery in Griff's past is, and what happened during the 10 years he was missing.
Lynn from Camp Hill, PA
Have you ever read a book by Beverly Barton?
No.
What other romantic suspense authors do you read?
None.
What did you think of THE DYING GAME?
I enjoyed the book. I usually avoid the romance genre, however, my interest was peaked when I saw that this was about a serial killer. Ms. Barton managed to stay focused on the story about the serial killer, while weaving in the romantic tension between Lindsay and Judd. She didn't sacrifice the story for the romance. I read the book in two days.
Would you ever read a future book by Beverly Barton?
Absolutely. I can't believe I have to wait until February 2008 [for the sequel].
Margaret from Signal Mtn, TN

I always read James Patterson's and Patricia Cornwell's books.
What did you think of THE DYING GAME?
I thought that this book was easy to read. It got a little gory about halfway through the book, and as it progressed, the descriptions of the murders got more descriptive.

I have not previously read a book by Beverly Barton and do not normally read romantic suspense.
What did you think of THE DYING GAME?
I enjoyed the book very much, finding some of the characters intriguing. The romantic part isn't something I normally look for in a suspense book. I found, for my taste, that she was not excessive in that area. Yes, I know and understand the category!
Would you ever read a future book by Beverly Barton?
Yes, I would read future books by Beverly Barton.
Pam from Florence, MS

I have never read a book by Beverly Barton.

Emilie Richards is my favorite author, followed closely by Iris Johansen and Karen Robards.
What did you think of THE DYING GAME?
I really liked it. The twists and turns kept me going until the very end. The only thing I didn't like was that the ending was left open for a sequel. I like everything to be taken care of in one book before starting another!
Would you ever read a future book by Beverly Barton?
Yes, I will definitely look forward to reading more books by Ms. Barton.
Pat from Southgate, MI
Have you previously read a book by Beverly Barton?
No.
What other romantic suspense authors do you read?
Sandra Brown and Nora Roberts.
What did you think of THE DYING GAME?
This book was another grabber right from the beginning (kind of gory, but my kind of book). Without giving the plot away for future readers, I thought it was well written. The killer was a real sicko. I wish that it had come out in hardback, though. I thought the print in the paperback was kind of small and hard to read.
Would you ever read a future book by Beverly Barton?
Most definitely. In fact, I've already started doing a search on other books written by her.
Robyn from Woodland Hills, CA
Have you previously read a book by Beverly Barton?

Rose from Pittsburgh, PA
Have you previously read a book by Beverly Barton?
Yes I have, mainly all of her Silhouette Intimate Moments and Desire books.
What other romantic suspense authors do you read?
I mostly read women authors who had their beginnings with Harlequin, Silhouette, Loveswept, etc., but I have read other women authors such as Elizabeth Adler, Donna Leon, etc.
What did you think of THE DYING GAME?
I just finished reading, and my first thought after closing the book was, "Wow!"
Usually, if I really like a book, I can't put it down until I'm done reading it. In this case, I was so fascinated with this story that I literally had to force myself to stop reading so it wouldn't end too soon. I wanted to stretch it out as long as I could and hold out for the ending climax. Wow!
Also, I love how the author kept the reader hanging for the next book, the next kill. I'm curious to unravel the mysteries behind the principal players.
Before reading THE DYING GAME, I reread some of Ms Barton's earlier books from Silhouette Desire and Intimate Moments and you can see how far she has grown as an author.
Would you ever read a future book by Beverly Barton?
Yes --- every single one I can find!
Sue from Wayland, NY
Have you previously read a book by Beverly Barton?
Thank you so much for THE DYING GAME. This was the first book I had read by Beverly Barton. I was very impressed with her writing and the twists and turns in the story. I am looking forward to her next book with “Pudge” and “Griffin”. I plan to go and request several of her past books from the library.
What other romantic suspense authors do you read?
I read a variety of books on many different themes. I enjoy Karen Robards's books, as well as many other authors. I particularly enjoy any type of mystery, or books with a psychological twist to them.
What did you think of THE DYING GAME?
THE DYING GAME was an exciting book to read. It captured my attention from the very beginning and kept it throughout the book. If I can get through the first 25 pages without losing interest, then I will probably finish a book. Ms. Barton was able to do that with her writing. She gives enough information to keep you interested without giving away too much. Her characters are real --- you can identify with them, and feel their pain and happiness as you read.
Sandy from Greenfield, MA

This was the first book I have read by Beverly Barton.
What other romantic suspense authors do you read?
I read a lot of mystery writers --- James Patterson, Richard North Patterson, John Grisham, W. E. B. Griffin and Jonathan Kellerman, to name a few.
What did you think of THE DYING GAME?
I like THE DYING GAME, though I thought it was a little too long, and less girls could have been killed. I loved Lindsay and Judd. I couldn't wait for them to be in the chapter I was reading. I also enjoyed the way Beverly wrote. The words flowed and I didn't want to put the book down.
Would you ever read a future book by Beverly Barton?
I will read the next book. Thanks for giving me the opportunity to read this one.
Susy from Greely, ON

What other romantic suspense authors do you read?
Some of my favourite romantic suspense authors include: Nora Roberts, Lisa Jackson, J. D. Robb, Cherry Adair and Sandra Brown

I do read Tami Hoag, but prefer her less "romantic" novels.
What did you think of THE DYING GAME?
The book was okay --- just not my type.
Would you ever read a future book by Beverly Barton?
I probably won't read any more of hers. I don't want to sound negative about Beverly's writing, it is just [not the kind of book I usually read]. I do like mysteries and serial murders, but I don't choose to put romance into them.
Thank you again for the book --- I will pass it along to members of my book group!
Vikki from Oak Harbor, WA

I have read romance suspense novels by Elizabeth Sinclair, Sandra Brown, Nora Roberts and Suzanne Brockmann.
What did you think of THE DYING GAME?
I thoroughly enjoyed THE DYING GAME. The moment I began reading this book, I was immediately drawn into the story. It had you cheering on the characters, at the same time trying to figure out who was the real killer. The conflict, intertwining and interactions between the main characters kept the you captivated until the very end. I hated to see the book end.
Would you ever read a future book by Beverly Barton?
I very much look forward to the next book by Beverly Barton --- particularly if the next book is a continuation of THE DYING GAME. I have placed Beverly Barton on my list of favorite authors. I really enjoyed the book. Thank you for providing me with an advance copy. I look forward to reading more Beverly Barton Books. Thank you again.
