Barry from Marietta, GA

Have you previously read a book by William Landay?
Thank you for the opportunity to review an advance copy of William Landay's new book, THE STRANGLER. I enjoyed it, and it held my interest throughout. This was the first book [I've read by this author]. What other suspense/thriller authors do you read?
Other suspense/thriller authors I read: Ted Bell, Lincoln Child, Stephen Coonts, Jeffery Deaver, Brian Haig, Jack Higgins, Robert Ludlum, Douglas Preston, Daniel Silva and Brad Thor.

What did you think of THE STRANGLER?
Overall, I thought the book was very good, and it held my interest throughout. The character introductions, while necessary, seemed a little drawn out for me. Once past that, the pace picked up and kept me focused on what was happening. The fact that William Landay kept you focused not only on the strangler, but also on the interrelationship of the Daley family and the Boston Police Dept. definitely enhanced the book. I would definitely recommend it to others.

Would you ever read a future book by William Landay?
I will read future books by William Landay. Thanks again for including me in the advance review group. I look forward to the opportunity to participate again in the future.

Cindi from Florence, AL

Have you previously read a book by William Landay?
No, this is my first book by this author.

What other suspense/thriller authors do you read?
Allison Brennan, Lisa Gardner, Tess Gerritsen, J. A. Konrath, Harley Jane Kozak, Michele Martinez, James Patterson and M.J. Rose. Plus, many others.

What did you think of THE STRANGLER?
I thought it was a well-written book with very believable characters. I was hoping it would be more about the Boston Strangler, but it wasn't, which was fine because I got into it and what was going to happen to Joe, Ricky, and Michael. The Daley brothers were so very different, but they were family. A lot of the book was also about the West End of Boston in 1963. Interesting things happened in those days. The book also has me questioning if Albert Desalvo was the Boston Strangler or not.

Would you ever read a future book by William Landay?
Yes. I would love to read his previous novel, MISSION FLATS, also.

Ginny from Dixon, IL

Have you previously read a book by William Landay?
No, I haven't, but I'm going to get his other book now.

What other suspense/thriller authors do you read?
I read a lot of them and look for new books by each. Among them are Harlan Coben, Michael Connelly, Nelson DeMille, Daniel Silva, Douglas Preston & Lincoln Child, Brad Meltzer, David Baldacci, Kathy Reichs, Richard North Patterson, Jeffery Deaver and Phillip Margolin.

What did you think of THE STRANGLER?
I enjoyed the book thoroughly and read it in one weekend. Landay has the ability to make you think you know what's going on, and then show you how it really is. His characters have depth, and his attention to detail in setting the scene is wonderful. I realize this is fiction, but there were times when he really took me back and I thought this was the real thing.

I was most intrigued to see that some of these characters, like Michael, were able to rise above what I thought they'd be capable of. Wonderful read!

Would you ever read a future book by William Landay?

Oh yes, I will read a future book, and as I said before, I'm going to find his first one too. Thanks for the opportunity to enjoy this exciting book and to discover a new favorite author.

THE STRANGLER is an explosive, captivating tale of murder, family secrets, and loyalty. Three brothers, whose father was a cop, follow in his footsteps --- kind of. They are all connected with the law in one way or another. One is a cop with gambling problems, another is a skilled burglar, and the third one is a lawyer assigned to work on the Strangler case. When the mysterious Strangler suddenly attacks near home, the story catapults into twists and turns, revealing secrets that will absolutely shock and leave readers astonished. Stephen King, Dean Koontz, John Sandford, Iris Johansen, James Patterson, Michael Weaver, John Saul, Patricia Cornwell and Tess Gerritsen, etc.

What did you think of THE STRANGLER?
It was a very good study of flawed characters and a very good read.

Would you ever read a future book by William Landay?
Yes.

Susan from Coventry, RI

Have you previously read a book by William Landay?
First of all, thank you for this opportunity. I haven't read any of William Landay's work prior to THE STRANGLER. I am going to pick up MISSION FLATS today!

What other suspense/thriller authors do you read?
I love Dennis Lehane (another Boston favorite!).

What did you think of THE STRANGLER?
I could not put this book down! Hey, sometimes clichés are necessary! At times, I felt like I was reading right off the front pages of the Boston Globe, and other times I had the feeling I was standing right next to the characters. OK, I did put the book down. I've never had to close a cover before just to catch my breath; for one particular moment I had to. I am a total book slut and so many endings disappoint. Now this was an ending. At once, I was laughing, only to feel the eerie tingle down my spine as I read the last word.

Would you ever read a future book by William Landay?
I cannot wait for Mr. Landay's next book!

Thomas from Ocean Grove, NJ

Have you previously read a book by William Landay?
THE STRANGLER is my first book by William Landay.

What other suspense/thriller authors do you read?
The list of authors is long, but here are a few: Daniel Silva, Jeffery Deaver, Steve Berry, Michael Connelly, Jonathan Kellerman, and the list goes on. I try to read as many of the books recommended by Bookreporter.com as I can.

What did you think of THE STRANGLER?
I found THE STRANGLER a real page turner. I kept wondering how many families live under such mix-up circumstances. Mr. Landay made the family seem very real, and able to cope with all their problems. I enjoyed the book very much.

Would you ever read a future book by William Landay?

I look forward to his next book.

Whitney from Elizabethtown, PA

Have you previously read a book by William Landay?
No.

What other suspense/thriller authors do you read?
Lee Child, Patricia Cornwell, Richard Montanari, Mark Billingham, Barry Eisler, Karin Slaughter, Jonathan Kellerman, John Connolly, Michael Connelly, John Sandford, Dean Koontz...

What did you think of THE STRANGLER?
While the Boston Strangler is part of this novel, it is mostly a peripheral storyline that intersects in integral parts of three Boston brothers' lives. This notorious case manages as a larger representation of the dark dangers that can happen to us all, either [from inside or outside of] ourselves. The novel is a portrait of the three Daley brothers dealing individually (and occasionally as a family) with their own demons that are often as frightening, elusive, and deadly as the Strangler. The writing and characters are vivid, and while in the beginning you wonder 'Where is this whole thing going?', the promise of a fulfilling and nerve-wracking story inspires the reader to forge ahead through the actions and consequences of the characters, to a faster-paced, somewhat heavy-hearted, but ultimately satisfying finale.

Would you ever read a future book by William Landay?
It would depend on the premise.

Brian from Washington, D.C.

Have you previously read a book by William Landay?
No.

What other suspense/thriller authors do you read?
Although, suspense/thrillers are not the books I read the most, I do like the following authors: Mary Higgins Clark, Elizabeth George, Brad Meltzer, Richard North Patterson, Dennis Lehane, Michael Connelly, Patricia Highsmith, Carl Hiaasen, David Baldacci, Mo Hayder, Daniel Woodrell and Harlan Coben.

What did you think of THE STRANGLER?

The book wasn't bad, however, it was not what I was [expecting]. I was [expecting] a mystery about the Boston stranger, and it was more about this Boston family. Although that was fine, the real problem I had with the novel was that I really didn't feel for these characters. There was a disconnect. They weren't likable, and [there was] not that much emotion behind them.

Would you ever read a future book by William Landay?
I probably would.

Gina from Winooski, VT

Have you previously read a book by William Landay?
I have not previously read anything by William Landay.

What other suspense/thriller authors do you read?
I regularly read Michael Connelly, Jonathan Kellerman, and Patricia Cornwell, as well as Karin Slaughter, Richard North Patterson and Tess Gerritsen.

What did you think of THE STRANGLER?
I found the book interesting once I got into it. It was a struggle [to hold my interest at the beginning], but then I found that the story grabbed my attention and was well told.

Would you ever read a future book by William Landay?
I would certainly take a look at future [books by William Landay] and put them on my reading list. Thanks for the opportunity to read something new.

Margaret from Signal Mountain, TN

Have you previously read a book by William Landay?
No, I haven't.

What other suspense/thriller authors do you read?
David Morrell, Stuart Woods and Mary Higgins Clark.

What did you think of THE STRANGLER?
It was VERY hard to get into. It's an OK read once you are halfway through --- but just OK.

Would you ever read a future book by William Landay?
Maybe --- only if it is set in the current time period. I didn't like the 1960s.
