Tess Gerritsen

Fast Facts:

  • Tess's mother, a Chinese immigrant, enjoyed watching American horror films and considered them her introduction into American Culture. As a result, Tess spent much of her early childhood in theaters, watching movies such as Invasion of the Body Snatchers, The Birds, Godzilla and The Mummy. These experiences helped shape her fascination with the dark themes found in her novels.

  • Tess is a Phi Beta Kappa graduate of Stanford University and she attended medical school at UC San Francisco. She worked as a physician in Honolulu for many years, and began writing fiction while on maternity leave. She published her first novel, CALL AFTER MIDNIGHT, in 1987.

  • Tess wrote romantic suspense novels before shifting her focus to medical thrillers with the 1996 publication of HARVEST. She became inspired to write this novel about an international black market for human organs after overhearing a conversation at a restaurant about orphans in Russia who were being kidnapped and shipped abroad as organ donors.

  • Tess wrote a screenplay titled Adrift, which aired as a 1993 CBS Movie of the Week starring Kate Jackson.

  • THE MEPHISTO CLUB is the sixth book in a series featuring Boston Police Detective Jane Rizzoli and Medical Examiner Maura Isles. Previous titles include THE SURGEON, THE APPRENTIC, THE SINNER, BODY DOUBLE and VANISH.

  • The premise for THE MEPHISTO CLUB stemmed from a copy of RH Charles's translation of The Book of Enoch, which Tess stumbled upon in a bookstore in Oxford, England. This ancient and long-lost text written by the grandfather of Noah --- once widely read, but struck from Hebrew Scripture --- describes an "unholy" race, descended from the offspring of fallen angels and humans, who will forever plague mankind.

  • Tess currently lives in Maine with her husband, a retired physician. They have two grown sons.

  • In her spare time, Tess enjoys gardening and playing the fiddle.
