Here are comments from our group of Advance Readers about Greg Rucka's PRIVATE WARS.

Diane from Cleveland, TN

Have you previously read a book by Greg Rucka?
I read FINDER.

What other suspense/thriller authors do you read?
In reading PRIVATE WARS, the first author that came to mind was Len Deighton. The style was similar. I also read all of John Sandford, Tom Clancy and any others that come my way.

What did you think of PRIVATE WARS?
I really liked this book. Mr. Rucka takes no prisoners. The story is totally unpredictable and it keeps you hanging until the very end. There is a lot of action along with the suspense --- it's a hard book to put down once you start.

Would you ever read a future book by Greg Rucka?
Absolutely. I plan on looking for all his back issues as well.

Jennifer from Cheraw, SC

Have you previously read a book by Greg Rucka?
This was the first book I have read by Greg Rucka, but I surely intend to have plenty more from him follow! I was so excited to have the opportunity of getting this advanced readers copy and began reading it and could not put it down!

What other suspense/thriller authors do you read?
I don't really have any particular authors in mind that I read. I normally just pick up something that catches my curiosity or interest. Although, I do enjoy most [books by] James Patterson, Sue Grafton and Evanovich.

What did you think of PRIVATE WARS?
The character of Tara Chace just draws you in and makes you feel as if you are right there with her fighting for the country and all. This was a very easy book to read and by that I mean it didn't get bogged down in all the spy jargon and hocus pocus some of your other writers tend to do.

Linda Ann from Wichita, KS

Have you previously read a book by Greg Rucka?
Besides A FISTFUL OF RAIN, I've read all of Mr. Rucka's works and he's become a favorite of mine.

What other suspense/thriller authors do you read?
Brad Thor, Vince Flynn and Daniel Silva.

What did you think of PRIVATE WARS?
PRIVATE WARS was a great book. At first it was a bit hard getting into because I was so focused on learning Britain's terminology, but after I got the hang of it (the glossary was great) I really got absorbed in the book. Tara's a woman on a mission. She has her own private demons but is able to push them aside for the time being to get her job done.

Would you ever read a future book by Greg Rucka?
Definitely.

Lisa from Pasadena, TX

Have you previously read a book by Greg Rucka?
No, this was the first time I've read anything by Greg Rucka.

What other suspense/thriller authors do you read?
John Sandford, James Patterson, Alex Kava, Michael Prescott and J.A. Konrath.

What did you think of PRIVATE WARS?
I really enjoyed reading this book; read it in one sitting. Greg Rucka manages to keep several plots both separate and interwoven at the same time. PRIVATE WARS is an intense spy thriller with a hard-as-granite heroine in Tara Chace who knows what needs to be done and does it. I look forward to reading more by Greg Rucka.

Would you ever read a future book by Greg Rucka?
Yes.

Pam from Redan, GA

Have you previously read a book by Greg Rucka?
No.

What other suspense/thriller authors do you read?
I read Karin Slaughter and Michael Connelly, and lightweights like Stuart Woods, James Patterson and Mary Higgins Clark.

What did you think of PRIVATE WARS?
I'm still in the middle of reading the book due to my busy schedule this month, but what I've read so far has surprised me with its rich density. Typically, I skim over a lot of technical details, but his fascinate me, luring me into the story in a way that makes the book hard to put down and a treat to look forward to going back to. Also, I must admit that I'm usually biased against reading novels set in places other than America. Not anymore!!!!

Would you ever read a future book by Greg Rucka?
Yes, definitely. He's definitely now on my list of authors to read.

Rey from North Babylon, NY

Have you previously read a book by Greg Rucka?
Yes. I've read his books A FISTFUL OF RAIN and A GENTLEMAN'S GAME.

What other suspense/thriller authors do you read?
I read Jonathan Kellerman, Faye Kellerman, Michael Connelly and Richard Montanari.

What did you think of PRIVATE WARS?
I love it. I became a fan of Rucka when I read A GENTLEMAN'S GAME and this book being the continuation of that novel was great to read to see what happened to Tara and what her frame of mind was. The novel was more than I expected and I really enjoyed reading it.

Would you ever read a future book by Greg Rucka?
Not only would I read one, but I'm eagerly awaiting his next title.

Sue from North Grosvenordale, CT

Have you previously read a book by Greg Rucka?
I have not read anything by Greg Rucka before.

What other suspense/thriller authors do you read?
I have read Clive Cussler, Dan Brown, Richard North Patterson, James Patterson and Joel Rosenberg, just to name a few.

What did you think of PRIVATE WARS?
Tara is an exciting character. In a genre that usually portrays men in this role, I was pleased to see a smart, savvy, and very gutsy woman. I loved the dual plot of her sense of herself as a mother but as someone who thrives on danger and is good at it... This is an exciting departure for me and is a very exciting concept for female readers. Rucka made her a believable character without making her a cartoon. I loved the fact that you were guessing until the very end: "who were the good guys?" The trip through the underworld of Uzbekistan was interesting and very edgy. I loved the book and can't wait to see who gets to play Tara in the movie!! The only thing that I didn't like, but was necessary, was the letters of the agencies and titles... I had to keep flipping back and forth. In some of the shorter titles it might have been just as well to spell them out first... make a notation that from here forth they will be initials.

Would you ever read a future book by Greg Rucka?
I would definitely read another book by Rucka.

Arthur from Stillwater, OK

Have you previously read a book by Greg Rucka?
I have not previously read any work by Mr. Rucka.

What other suspense/thriller authors do you read?
I read a great variety of mystery/thriller authors. Most recently, I have read works by Michael Connelly, Elmore Leonard, Mark Haddon and Jonathan Kellerman.

What did you think of PRIVATE WARS?
Rucka has a graceful and intelligent style that absorbs the reader's sustained attention... all in all, [it] was most enjoyable reading [Editor's note: this comment was edited to prevent a spoiler].

Would you ever read a future book by Greg Rucka?
I would most certainly seek out other writings by Mr. Rucka.

Eric from Arlington, TX

Have you previously read a book by Greg Rucka?
I have never read a Rucka novel before.

What other suspense/thriller authors do you read?
I usually only read thrillers. They are my passion. My favorite authors are Greg Iles, Jeffery Deaver and Michael Connelly.

What did you think of PRIVATE WARS?
I thought PRIVATE WARS was really good. It's not the best book I've read this year, but I really enjoyed the character Chace. She was a very well-written character.

Would you ever read a future book by Greg Rucka?
Now that I have read a book by Rucka, I would read another book by him.

Renee from Valleyford, WA

Have you previously read a book by Greg Rucka?
This was the first Greg Rucka book that I had read.

What other suspense/thriller authors do you read?
My favorite authors are Douglas Preston and Lincoln Child's joint works. (I enjoy their separate writings as well, but prefer their joint efforts.) CABINET OF CURIOSITIES is my favorite.

What did you think of PRIVATE WARS?
I would describe this as a complex, modern thriller. I was almost a fourth of the way through the book before I realized that everything prior to this was just setting the scene. The book is composed of layers of characters/situations that are all interrelated. I found that the book bounced from scene to scene so much that it was hard to keep track of all the characters. I found myself wading through this book... when I just wanted to be done with the book.

Would you ever read a future book by Greg Rucka?
I would consider reading another Greg Rucka book, perhaps set in a different venue. However, I would not make it a point to find another Greg Rucka book.

Sandy from Greenwood, IN

Have you previously read a book by Greg Rucka?
I have read several of Greg Rucka's books before PRIVATE WARS. The two I enjoyed the most were CRITICAL SPACE and A FISTFUL OF RAIN. A FISTFUL OF RAIN was the reason I wanted to read PRIVATE WARS.

What other suspense/thriller authors do you read?
I read many books, about three to five a week, everything from Ludlum to Connelly. I do enjoy Tom Clancy, but Cussler is my all time favorite. I don't read many love stories but enjoy history and war, suspense and thrillers and will read anything at times.

What did you think of PRIVATE WARS?
I think this was a good book but not as good as A FISTFUL OF RAIN. Tara was too hard in chapters and not hard enough in others. I would like to see her use her head more (it was so good when she did) and action less. A little bit of humor for her? The other minor characters were so crazy and that really added to the book. I understand Tara was really a relentless female assassin and I really got that but in the end, [Rucka] made her a woman, a mother, and that did not all happen at once. I wanted a little more timing and spacing of that move. I liked the fact that when she needed to, she could put her job before anything, even families, but that would be very hard for most women. Maybe that's what will make women like this book. Appeal more to women in the reviews because I liked the subject and the book.

Advice? Keep studying and writing about women, [Rucka does] have a good understanding about them and Tara will continue to grow. Keep up the action, more with the head and less with the gut. Appeal to the female readers, [Rucka has] a good audience there. Keep writing.

Would you ever read a future book by Greg Rucka?
I can't wait for Rucka's next Chace book! So the answer is yes, I will read more Rucka books. I think Tara will continue to grow.

Trudy from Novato, CA

Have you previously read a book by Greg Rucka?
No.

What other suspense/thriller authors do you read?
Stephen White, Harlan Coben, Vince Flynn, James Patterson, Grisham, Brian Haig and Francine Mathews.

What did you think of PRIVATE WARS?
Sorry, it was very hard to get into. It just did not grab my interest.

Would you ever read a future book by Greg Rucka?
Probably not.

Mary from Wamego, KS

Have you previously read a book by Greg Rucka?
No.

What other suspense/thriller authors do you read?
Not many --- I used to read Helen MacInnes and Ian Fleming years ago.

What did you think of PRIVATE WARS?
[It was] very good. It kept my attention from the first page and surprised me at the end.

Would you ever read a future book by Greg Rucka?
This is not quite my style, but I probably would read another. I would certainly recommend him to those who do like this style.

Mari-Ella from Brick, NJ

Have you previously read a book by Greg Rucka?
No, this is my first.

What other suspense/thriller authors do you read?
Stephen King, James Patterson, Dean Koontz, Keith Ablow and Dennis Lehane.

What did you think of PRIVATE WARS?
[It was] very good, not usually my style --- torture descriptions made me a little queasy but he's such a good writer I stayed with it and found it to be surprising and exciting.

Would you ever read a future book by Greg Rucka?
I would certainly read more by him.

Kara from St. Louis, MO

Have you previously read a book by Greg Rucka?
Yes, I had just read one of his previous novels this summer and really enjoyed it and have been meaning to pick up more titles.

What other suspense/thriller authors do you read?
You name it!

What did you think of PRIVATE WARS?
I really enjoyed it! [It was a] fast-paced spy thriller along the lines of Robert Ludlum or Daniel Silva. One of the main characters, Tara Chace, is 007 without the fancy cars, martinis and "Bond girls." A kick-butt spy who has real-life problems. It was a spy novel actually exhibiting political machinations, co-worker backstabbing, and budget crunches --- showing as much drama in the office as in the field.

Would you ever read a future book by Greg Rucka?
Most definitely.
