Stephen White

Fast Facts:

  • Stephen White did not "set out" to write a series featuring Alan Gregory when he wrote his first book featuring the character (PRIVILEGED INFORMATION).

  • White "lasted three weeks" as a creative writing major at University of California-Irvine. He graduated from University of California-Berkeley in 1972.

  • In 1979 White received his Ph.D. from the University of Colorado.

  • White was a practicing psychologist when he began writing his first novel, PRIVILEGED INFORMATION. One of White's psychologist colleagues was psychologist/author Jonathan Kellerman. When Kellerman and White met, they were "two of only about a dozen psychologists in the country working in pediatric oncology."

  • One of White's inspirations for THE BEST REVENGE was witnessing an interview with condemned prisoner Gary Davis in 1997.

  • In THE BEST REVENGE the characters Bill Graves and Martha are named after "real live" people as the result of a charity auction.

  • The American Psychological Association gave White its Golden Psi Media Award for his depiction of Gregory, a serious therapist grappling with "hot-off-the-headlines" ethical dilemmas.

  • White's brother Richard, author of AHANAGRAN: A History Of Stories, was a Pulitzer Prize finalist.
