QUESTIONS FROM READERS

January's featured suspense novelist, Stephen Frey, answers readers questions about his plots, characters, and feelings on current economic/business newsmakers.

DFSn180@aol.com: The ending of SILENT PARTNER was sort of left open --- will there be a sequel?

Stephen Frey: ALWAYS a possibility. I really enjoyed writing both Angela and Tucker/Lawrence.

mary.caulfield@verizon.net: Do banks really target certain groups and deny them loans? Is there really software that can determine the likelihood of a person's racial background based on information given online? If so, you incorporated it all into a fascinating thriller. If not, what a great imagination!

Stephen Frey: There's been a lot of work on profiling in lots of areas. Whether certain banks actually target specific groups is something I really can't answer. With respect to softwares that track and try to predict, they absolutely exist. Again, whether certain softwares track specific groups, that's something I can't answer.

PASTANICK@aol.com: I would like to know your thoughts about the Martha Stewart and Enron scandals. I would also like to know your thoughts on all these powerful CEOs being ousted from big companies.

Stephen Frey: All of the corporate scandals point to the fact that we as investors must trust those at the top of the companies we invest in and those that watch them. Without trust in numbers, our financial system literally disintegrates. Which is the topic of my next book.

ragsk2743@aol.com: Would you consider doing another novel using the two main characters, Jake and Angela, working together to uncover different forms of corruption?

Stephen Frey: I would absolutely consider using them again. I thought they made a pretty good team. The next time Angela would know a lot more about what she was dealing with --- or would she?

sharoncerasoli@hotmail.com: I would like to know where you get the inspiration for your female character in this story. I really liked Angela and felt she was well-developed. I thought it was realistic for her to be attracted to her ex, but was glad you did not have her act upon this. I loved the ending! I am also interested in your fleshing out the character of Jake Lawrence.

Stephen Frey: Angela is a mixture of the strong characteristics I see in my wife and other women I meet and interact with in the business world --- including my literary agent.

I'm an ardent Malaysian fan of Stephen Frey and have been reading his books since I first discovered THE VULTURE FUND some years back whilst hunting around for a good suspense novel. I was totally captivated. With my background in investment banking and corporate finance, I find his highly suspensful and riveting thrillers very interesting and relevant in today's financial world. His plots present interesting insight into what happens behind the scenes in financial transactions and at the same time provide for a really engrossing read.

I have introduced his books to many of my friends and colleagues in Malaysia, many of whom come from non-finance backgrounds, and they are now also great fans of Frey and feel that they have learnt a lot from his books. Frey is really good at describing financial concepts in layman terms, such that someone without much financial background can follow the plot easily and at the same time appreciate the intricacies of the financial world.

I am very glad to have stumbled upon this website whist searching for more info on Frey and his work, and I look forward to more interviews on him. I have just read THE DAY TRADER, which is another fantastic book, and am waiting for SILENT PARTNER to hit the bookstores over here.

Keep up the great work!

I am writing from the United Kingdom to let you know how much I enjoy Stephen Frey's books.

I came across his books by chance, in February 2001, picking up THE TAKEOVER and THE VULTURE FUND in a second hand shop and reading them both whilst recovering from illness.

I work in the financial world and find Stephen Frey's books realistic and full of suspense.

Once I had discovered Frey's books I wanted to read the rest of them but I found that book shops in the United Kingdom just did not stock them. Although I have managed to acquire THE DAY TRADER, THE LEGACY, and THE INNER SANCTUM (all equally brilliant) over the last couple of years I have not managed to acquire the three other books written by Frey, most recently SILENT PARTNER, until a shop in London offered to order them from the United States. I heard today that they had come so now Christmas has come albeit a bit late (or possibly early!) I now have three Frey books to read.

I just do not know why they are not on shelves in bookshops in the UK. Frey is so much better than Grisham whose books are everywhere.

Your site was brilliant as it was through you I have managed to find out a bit about Stephen Frey and to hear of his latest book.

Yours etc.

FBower444@aol.com on THE DAY TRADER:
Really enjoyed the story. I am looking forward to more of your writings.

As a long-term investor I still like the voyeuristic stories which deal, even peripherally, with short-term aspects of the market.

I thought that THE DAY TRADER was much less violent than earlier stories. I liked that refinement.
