The Case for Grace: A Journalist Explores the Evidence of Transformed Lives

Author Lee Strobel is a former Atheist who decided to read the Bible cover to cover to “prove it wrong.” In the process, Strobel became a believer and then, later, a teaching pastor. He then decided to share what he learned and write books on various aspects of the Christian faith. A New York Times bestselling author, Strobel has written titles like THE CASE FOR CHRIST, THE CASE FOR FAITH, THE CASE FOR THE REAL JESUS and THE CASE FOR A CREATOR.

Strobel’s latest offering is THE CASE FOR GRACE. According to seekfind.net, “grace” is perhaps one of the most misunderstood and/or misinterpreted words in the Bible. While Christians define grace as the “unmerited favor of Christ,” and the Bible clearly states that we are saved by grace, through faith, many of us still struggle with understanding the way God’s grace really works and how it affects our daily lives.

THE CASE FOR GRACE takes a different approach from his previous informative works. Instead of a biblical study, or relying on scientific evidence, the author uses his journalistic expertise by conducting personal interviews with people who have basically hit rock bottom and have experienced God’s grace first hand. Through their stories of transformation, readers are given a glimpse of grace in action. Ways that God has extended His grace to people --- not because they deserved it, but simply because of God’s goodness.

"Grace is most definitely one of God’s most precious gifts to his children. This book will encourage and inspire readers to embrace God’s grace, treasure it, and, more importantly, share it."

In addition to sharing bits and pieces of God’s grace in his own life, there are several amazing testimonies, including “The Orphan,” in which a Korean woman who, at the age of three, was abandoned by her mother and left to live on the streets for years before she was rescued and later adopted by an American family. The trauma she endured is unimaginable, yet she holds no bitterness, instead choosing to focus on how God provided a way out of the horrific life she was thrown into.

Other stories involve a man whose family was torn apart, killed and imprisoned, and how he came face to face with his executioner. There are stories of a drug addict, a prodigal, and others who learned hard lessons of just what it means to forgive and choose to extend grace to others, as well as receive it themselves.

THE CASE FOR GRACE is written in a simplistic and conversational style that is easy to understand. The message is conveyed in a fresh way that touches on the emotions of the reader and results in some “aha” moments as we grasp the meaning of grace and how it has the power to affect our lives every day.

At the end of the book, there is a lengthy discussion guide, broken down by chapter, opening up the window of conversation and personal reflection. Also included is an appendix with several pages of “What the Bible Says about Grace,” referencing many scriptures to look up and study. Finally, there is a nice list of recommended books on grace for those who want more on the subject.

Lee Strobel makes a wonderful CASE FOR GRACE with this excellent addition to his Case series. Even if you still have questions about the true meaning of grace when you close this book, you likely won’t be questioning God’s goodness or His ability to bring beauty from the ashes of this broken and sinful world. Grace is most definitely one of God’s most precious gifts to his children. This book will encourage and inspire readers to embrace God’s grace, treasure it, and, more importantly, share it.
