Omamori Himari, Vol. 5

Review

Omamori Himari, Vol. 5

It’s one problem after another in the latest volume of Omamori Himari, and I’m not just talking about Yuuto’s lack of demon slayer ability. There is also the fact that he continues to defy his demon slayer heritage by following his own beliefs.

Himari is still stuck in her miniature form from the vindictive Kuesu Jinguuji’s spell, and the timing of things just seems to get worse and worse when an old opponent shows up, intent on taking Yuuto’s blood to increase her ayakashi powers.

Then, ayakashi numbers in the western region are dwindling, due to a demonic duo that is feeding on them without mercy or hesitation. The duo soon makes themselves known to Yuuto and his friends, and in doing so, attacks Himari. Even though they leave without killing or eating anyone, they are revealed to be the legendary Nine-Tailed Fox and the Oni ruler, Shuten-Doji. They claim to be after “a higher and purer demon power,” and leave the heroes on that note.

This manga is an excellent lesson in acceptance of those around you, regardless of race—in this case, demon vs. human–that shows that people can be friends despite racial differences. The artwork is solid, and the story is both amusing and intriguing, with plenty of romantic tension.

As an added bonus, Milan Matra includes his first work to be published in a polular magazine, the parent story of Omamori Himari, Commence Operation.

For fans of the fantasy and harem genres, this manga is a jewel and definitely deserves a chance–a chance you will not regret giving.
