I Am What I Ate...and I'm Frightened!!! And Other Digressions From the Doctor of Comedy

In his latest book the Coz drags himself and his Baby Boomer peers kicking and screaming into harsh reality. Bill Cosby didn't start worrying about his diet until he was in his sixties and his cholesterol was six times that. I think the rest of us are rudely awakened much earlier. But for a celebrity the harsh realities of aging are delayed by the fact that they are usually well insulated from the world. "I'm not gonna tell him he shouldn't eat that cheesecake. You tell him not to eat that cheesecake!" Like that.

But rich or poor, famous, infamous or unknown, whole rainbows of men and women in their fifties and sixties are inevitably being struck with the realization that they are not twenty-five years old anymore. ARRRGGGHHH. Just when you get to the point where you can afford all that good food at fancy restaurants, the Cosmic Jokester says: Do you know how many grams of fat are in that crepe?

Cosby meanders through I AM WHAT I ATE in the same enjoyable style that we have loved in his monologues. His observations, seen with the comic's eye, make us wonder why we don't have that gift. It takes a gift to notice and discuss how everyone reacts when three people at the table order things like fruit cocktails and watermelon while the fourth person orders a pepperoni pizza. An older Cosby but still a witty Cosby for sure.

Reading through this little book won't give you any new insights on how to age gracefully or break the habits that keep you tethered. But it will give you some smiles and allow you to knowingly nod your head as a funny and famous peer verbalizes your innermost dreads.
