The main character is a boy of the first generation of Shaker to be required to attend public school. His father is illiterate, but wise in the ways of the Shaker and of the human heart. This maturation novel is autobiographical and displays keen insights into father/son relationships, basic human values and rites of passage that are universal in appeal. Readability is about 7.
