Barbara Delinsky weaves a story rich with life and life's choices in LAKE NEWS. We meet Lily Blake, a teacher in Boston. She supplements her income by singing and playing piano at a private dinner club. She has a pleasant but unassuming life, working hard, meeting with friends, living what most of us would call a fulfilling existence.
When she succumbs to the questions of a reporter, supposedly looking for a story on local piano players, the world takes a turn for the worse. She is grossly misquoted and misrepresented. Her platonic relationship with a priest, recently made cardinal, is grist for Terry Sullivan's mill; an old wound still festering.
Forced by lies and fabrications to flee Boston, Lily finds her grandmother's cottage in Lake Henry to be her refuge, and another challenge. Meeting John Kipling, a former colleague of the man who has chosen to ruin her life, is a delight, albeit a cautious one. John has put his past life as a big city journalist behind him, returned to his home in Lake Henry, and devotes his time to running the Lake News, a weekly newspaper, known to put a positive spin on the news. When his former enemy and fellow journalist has chosen to blacken the reputation of his former neighbor, John decides to join the fight to exonerate Lily.
Delinsky has painted a realistic story of family strife, honor and values, as she takes Lily and John through a difficult but satisfying journey. Enjoy the beautiful New Hampshire scenery and characters, listen to the loons on the lake and believe in the courage and strength of ordinary people.
