The latest
in the Alex Delaware series by Jonathan Kellerman is performed by
his regular reader, John Rubinstein, a well-known stage actor in New
York and London who is also featured in several films. Having read
everything Kellerman has written, I find this audiobook wanting. The
subject is politically appealing, controversial, and timely --- assisted
suicide. Perhaps it is the abridgment that is at fault, causing a
jump from witness to involved family member and back again.
When
Dr. Eldon Mate, known as Dr. Death, is found gruesomely murdered,
homicide detective Milo Sturgis is selected by the LAPD to investigate.
Of course he chooses our hero, Dr. Alex Delaware, noted child psychologist,
to assist in unraveling the complexities of the personalities. Interestingly,
Milo and Alex find that they cannot interact regarding the case,
as conflicts of interest arise.
The
plot does provide lots of finger-pointing and second guessing as
to the killer and their motive in dispensing with the King Of Euthanasia,
Dr. Mate. I personally changed my mind at least four times. The
reading is astute and well performed, and DR. DEATH will keep you
interested and guessing. However, I think Kellerman missed an opportunity
to weave a stronger storyline, considering that he had a very ripe
topic at hand.
