One of my favorite books of all time, "A Tree Grows in Brooklyn", by Betty Smith is a classic. The story of Francie Nolan, a poor girl of Irish descent growing up in Brooklyn in the earlier part of the century, is full of heartaches and triumphs. I've found myself reading this book many times since I first picked it up in the sixth grade. The characters jump off the page and into your heart. Ms. Smith has a way of making you identify with each person, but with Francie most of all. The way she handles her father being a drunk and yet still giving him all of her love and attention, how she deals with growing up poor and having to fight for everything she gets is a true inspiration. I suggest this book for readers of all ages. Anyone who loves a good story will undoubtedly come to adore this novel as much as I do.
