Lisa Osteen Comes, the associate pastor of Lakewood Church and sister of Joel Osteen, has much to share on developing an overcomer’s attitude toward all of life’s challenges. In YOU ARE MADE FOR MORE!, Lisa talks about the many and varied upheavals she has endured over the years. Opening her inspirational resource with a quote from her father, she shares the touchstone of her faith to prevail despite terrible setbacks: “You’ve encountered many struggles in life, so I can only think that God must have big plans for you.”
"Filled with numerous firsthand accounts of her life and countless practical takeaways, YOU ARE MADE FOR MORE! is “good for your soul” and good counsel for every day, come what may."
Upon this premise and her bedrock faith in God to meet her every need, Lisa writes to encourage other Christ followers what she already knows as fact: You Are Made for More! This “more” she speaks of includes: having more hope; realizing you’ve been created as a masterpiece by God; knowing you are made to be loved; made to fulfill your destiny; made to experience your dreams; made to live boldly; made for fulfillment, not failure; made to move mountains; made to rise above others’ expectations; made to succeed; made to do more because you are fully equipped; and made to keep on going and to win. If all this “made to do more…” reads like a shallow pipe dream offered by an optimistic author, it’s not. Given her candid disclosure on the heartaches she has suffered and eventually overcame, Lisa’s pep talk to other Christians rings soundly true.
Lisa’s parents were told that their daughter, who was born with a birth defect similar to cerebral palsy, would never grow up to be a normal child and that her family would always have to care for her. But the Osteens didn’t accept this final grim diagnosis; they continued to pray for her health and work with her until she defied the doctor’s prognosis and astounded everyone by walking and talking just fine. Then came the unwanted divorce papers that left Lisa with a desperately broken heart and a mask of confusion, wondering why her marriage had ended and why God had allowed it. Depression stalked Lisa for a long time, but eventually God broke through this deep pit and she emerged stronger for it. If these two obstacles weren’t enough, a mail bomb exploded in her lap while she was opening the daily mail at her father’s church. What should have killed her only wounded her. Still, she required surgeries to repair the damage to her abdomen --- injuries that also contributed to her inability to bear children.
Some six years of waiting and growing and trusting God for her future after her unwanted divorce, Lisa remarried. Her next challenge to face down was infertility. She recounts the mental and emotional agony of enduring the fertility treatments, only to be told by the doctor to simply get on with her life. Grieved yet undaunted, Lisa was now accustomed to running toward God instead of away from Him during life’s darkest hours. In God’s characteristically perfectly timed ways and means, He did provide children to her through adoption.
Lisa’s heart for God and her message to believe Him in every circumstance will encourage readers no matter what situation they find themselves in. Her words resonate honestly because she has lived through some of life’s most unthinkable heartaches and helps others to believe they can too. Filled with numerous firsthand accounts of her life and countless practical takeaways, YOU ARE MADE FOR MORE! is “good for your soul” and good counsel for every day, come what may.
