Hello Darkness (literally)
http://www.nyisbookcountry.com
Thursday afternoon we were putting the finishing touches on this week's Bookreporter.com update, congratulating ourselves for being ahead of schedule when....the lights went out. Realizing none of us had any "emergency preparedness skills" including having a flashlight, we found our way out of the office by the lights on our cellphone pads. Very smart of us, eh?

We walked down the fire escape twelve flights onto the street where other New Yorkers also were trying to figure out what was going on. We got in my car --- A/C and radio were two luxuries. Sunil our website producer jumped out and walked home to Brooklyn. Tom our editorial assistant and I took four hours to get to my house in New Jersey. A trip that in the morning took 45 minutes.

It was an adventure to say the least. Then we went home to watch it all on television --- like we had not lived it. So now you know where we were when the lights went out. We still wonder where Joan, our web designer is. She and her dog (our office mascot Charlie) left for LaGuardia to go to Cleveland on vacation just before the power poofed. We picture one very hyper pup with an exasperated young blonde woman in tow running around LaGuardia.

I kept thinking of the title of HELLO, DARKNESS, the new Sandra Brown book due in early October and of course the Simon and Garfunkel tune (which in fact inspired her title). As one driver was describing being in the Lincoln Tunnel when the lights went out, I thought of THE STAND where drivers were stranded in the tunnel. You know, if you think about it there is usually a literary tie-in or title for most events.

There's power in New Jersey where I am finishing off the newsletter and our producer lives in Knoxville, Tennessee so those of you with power will get Bookreporter.com right on time this week. We are amazed.

Last weekend I read the new book by Mary Jane Clark --- NOWHERE TO RUN. I had not read her before. It's a mystery about the events at a television station after someone brings anthrax into their offices. Who's responsible and why? Her writing reads a LOT like Mary Higgins Clark (no relation) so fans looking for a nice new mystery should think about this one.

I also read a terrific Young Adult book called THE EARTH, MY BUTT AND OTHER BIG THINGS by Carolyn Mackler, which was both funny and poignant. The story is about a young girl who is overweight trying to fit in in both her family and the world, but the message says a whole lot more. I had the pleasure of meeting Mackler at BEA this year. We will have a review on Teenreads.com next week.

As many of you know, New York is Book Country is an annual event in New York each September. This year the organization is celebrating its 25th Anniversary with a full lineup of author events and programs scheduled from September 17th to 21st. We encourage you to take a look at the lineup whether you live in the NY area or are planning a September vacation here.

As part of this series of events, The New York Times will be hosting The New York Times - New York is Book Country Literary Brunch at the Waldorf Astoria on Sunday, September 21st from 11AM to 2PM. Confirmed authors include Mitch Albom, Louis Begley, Dan Brown, Anita Diamant, E. Lynn Harris, Peggy Noonan, James Patterson and Alma Powell.

For more information, go to:
www.nytimes.com/timestalks

In spite of the power outage, we have a full lineup this week. So enjoy...and stay cool.
