Watching Seabiscuit, Reading Hepburn, Debating the Times and Introducing Brown
http://www.readinggroupguides.com/cgi-bin/survey/surveys.pl?poll=1
Last Sunday afternoon as the clouds rolled in we raced to the movies to see Seabiscuit. It's been a long time since I saw an audience applaud a film when it was done and then sit in their seats watching every credit roll. The casting and filming are brilliantly done and it follows the storyline of the book with great detail. I encourage you to see it. On ReadingGroupGuides.com we are polling readers about the movie and the book. Please click on the link at the end of this letter to cast your vote.

I spent much of the rest of the weekend absorbed in KATE REMEMBERED, the new book by A. Scott Berg, which is a lovely, warm personal look at the life of Katharine Hepburn. Reading it, you can hear her marvelous voice coming alive on the pages through the dialogue. Our reviewer Roberta O'Hara was just as captivated by the book, and we compiled questions for Berg, which he graciously answered. I always appreciate when we are able to share this kind of an interview with readers giving you a chance to hear more about the book from an author. I am not a huge TV viewer and as a result I miss most authors being interviewed on television.

This week we again share conservative and liberal viewpoints on a book as Joe Hartlaub and Jesse Kornbluth both review, JOURNALISTIC FRAUD: How the New York Times Distorts the News and Why It Can No Longer Be Trusted. We have plans to continue reviewing select current events and political titles like this in the months to come. Let the debate continue!

This week we also announce our latest Suspense/Thriller author, Sandra Brown whose new hardcover HELLO, DARKNESS will be in stores on October 7th. I read this while I was on vacation last April and found myself drawn into the world of Paris, the radio announcer who is being stalked by a phone-in caller. I could see her in the studio wearing her signature dark glasses doing her late night broadcast. And yes, I did have an urge to run and rent Play Misty for Me though HELLO, DARKNESS was even more chilling. If you would like to be one of 20 advance readers of this book, please send a note with your name and mailing address to SuspenseThriller@bookreporter.com. We look forward to sharing more about Brown and her work with you in the weeks to come.

Congratulations to our winners in Bookreporter.com's Best of Summer Contests and Seabiscuit Contest! Winners in the Summer Contests included Sylvia A., Katelyn E., Kathryn F., Tiffany R., and Nancy S (hardcover winners); Amy M., Eva M., Ricki M., Linda P., and Kim W. (paperback winners). The four Seabiscuit Contest Winners were Robin C., Catherine D., Bonnie G., and Dave H. Please note that we are using first names and last initials as a way of guarding privacy for our winners.

For those of you in the New York area, I am doing a segment on end-of-summer reading for CBS-TV that is slated to run next Thursday morning on the 5-7AM news. If you are awake, grab a cup of coffee and tune in!

Have a great week...by the way, I am going to rent some Hepburn movies this weekend!

Many consider the New York Times journalism's gold standard. Recent scandals have made some think twice. Now Bob Kohn, an attorney and devoted Times reader, argues that the paper's editors are presenting news with a liberal slant. Has the Times betrayed its heritage? Our conservative and liberal reviewers square off.
