Reading for Every Mood

While I love going to the movies, this is the one year there have not been many films I looked forward to seeing. That changes today when Seabiscuit hits theatres. I am determined to finish the book BEFORE I see the movie. I am thrilled that the ads are carrying a positive quote from Laura Hillenbrand. Typically many book-into-movie projects have an author only excited about the check which they receive!

Our last poll question had to do with Chick Lit. See below for a link to our definition of this genre (no, it is not a brand of gum), as well as a list of some of the best-known Chick Lit titles. Last weekend after I wrapped up 12 days of straight work, which included 8 days of conferences, I wanted to read something on the lighter side and escape. Chick Lit was the answer. I floated on a raft in the pool reading CONFESSIONS OF A SHOPAHOLIC by Sophie Kinsella. There are those who contest that Chick Lit is formulaic and the genre is over. I personally think there's always room for witty writing when it's well done. I do know I was a lot more relaxed --- and I was still laughing inside --- when I closed that last page.

Reading for different moods...hmmmm....there's one to ponder. What mood drives you to read what kind of a book?

When I was in Orlando I read a Lad Lit title (read our description of Chick Lit to figure out what Lad Lit is) called FLABBERGASTED by Ray Blackston. While this has been published in the Christian market, it's a real crossover title that has been getting some great buzz. The writer has a voice very much like Nick Hornby. It is well worth checking out. We will review it here soon.

Before you fill my mailbox, this is not to say that serious nonfiction does not have its place on your reading stacks as well. This week we take a look at TREASON by Ann Coulter with two reviewers weighing in. One proudly calls himself a conservative while the other claims a liberal mantle. Enjoy their polar views of the same title. This is the kind of feature that I love to do --- and plan to do more often!

Enjoy our lineup for this week...I am off to finish SEABISCUIT.

Have a great week...

TREASON: Liberal Treachery from the Cold War to the War on Terrorism by Ann Coulter (Politics/Current Events)
Reviewed by Jesse Kornbluth and Joe Hartlaub

In a follow-up to her number one bestseller SLANDER, leading conservative pundit Ann Coulter contends that liberals have been wrong on every foreign policy issue, from the fight against Communism to today's war on terrorism. She also examines how history, especially in the latter half of the twentieth century, has been written by liberals and, therefore, distorted by their perspective. Bookreporter.com Senior Editor Joe Hartlaub looks at the book from his conversative viewpoint while Bookreporter.com co-Founder Jesse Kornbluth sees it through his liberal lens. Let the debating begin!
