| What You're Reading...and a Contest |
| The Virginia Festival of the Book was great fun last weekend. Picture thousands of readers gathered in a town for a weekend of author readings and talks, bookish chat and lines of book signings. I met some authors whose work I had not read before including Donald Westlake, John Gilstrap (who will be joining us for an interview soon), Carolyn Hart and too many other to name. John Grisham's interview on Friday night was fun as he shared his stories about being an author, and how he writes. Best part about hearing an author present his or her work is hearing their voice, and trying to see where the tone on their pages comes from.
Every time I spend time with readers and authors like this I wish I made time to do it more often. I am enjoying seeing your responses to this week's poll that asks about your attendance at author signings and reading. My thoughts mirror yours as I too often do not know where authors are appearing and many other times the schedules when these appearances take place conflict with the times that I am free.
In Virginia I also felt like I was in a live Word of Mouth session as people all were buzzing about their favorite books. When readers heard what I do for a living they regularly say, "you have to read this." (For the record, this beats the days when I worked at a fashion magazine when people would thrust pictures into my hand and ask me if their daughter was cover model material.)
It's great to read your comments on Word of Mouth each week. Your voices are just as important to this website as those of our reviewers. Please keep writing what you think about books. A few months ago I got a letter from a librarian who said that the reader picks on Bookreporter.com are influencing her collection. She finds your voices to be bright, real and full of passion for books and reading (with no agendas).
Lots to share this week...keep reading. Don't forget our Suspense/Thriller contest where readers can win a collection of Jeffery Deaver's Lincoln Rhyme novels.
