A Very Bookish Weekend....
http://www.vabook.org
Our newsletter and weekly update comes to you a tad earlier than usual this week as I am heading off to Virginia for the Virginia Festival of the Book in Charlottesville. This weekend of author readings, panels and bookish chatter is an annual event in Charlottesville. Tonight one speaker is John Grisham, who rarely gives interviews. As they are anticipating a large crowd I guess this featured program is the book industry's equivilant of a Springsteen concert. I hope to see some of you there!

With the seemingly endless and often overpowering media coverage of the battle in Iraq this week, I found myself turning to books for escape. After 9/11 I found myself unable to read. This time I am finding solace in books. I wondered what you are feeling about books at this time. Have your reading habits changed, or stayed the same? Are you focused on more nonfiction, or fiction? Do you find yourself feeling the same as you did after 9/11 or different? If you'd like, drop me a note at Carol@bookreporter.com and share your comments. For those who are wondering what I am reading...it's Judith McNaught's SOMEONE TO WATCH OVER ME. I am enjoying it.

A note on one of the authors being featured here this week --- Dan Brown, author of THE DA VINCI CODE. A few years ago I moderated a panel that Dan was on where we talked about promoting books and authors to readers on the web. Dan was such fun to talk to and so full of great ideas. It's wonderful to see his success with this book, which has been the talk of the town all week.

We have a stellar lineup for you this week and I still need to pack so I am going to suggest here that you keep reading and I get packing. More to come next week...

Celebrating the Oscars with Bookish Style
http://www.bookreporter.com/features/030320-oscars.asp
The Academy Awards attract diehard movie fans who most certainly will have their faces glued to the television set for hours on Sunday night, as well as more casual moviegoers. Oscar night this year will be lower-keyed than usual with no red-carpet walk and a more subdued atmosphere, but this is still Hollywood's special night.

In honor of the big event, Bookreporter's own Andrew Musicus and Ron Kaplan each discuss books they have recently read that focus on the behind-the-scenes aspects of the film industry. Also, Tom Donadio also assembled the movies being recognized by the Academy this year that are based on critically-acclaimed and bestselling books --- along with the categories in which they have been nominated.
