Meet Our Reviewers

Since we launched Bookreporter.com we have had a dedicated staff of volunteer reviewers. While many of you have come to know them by name, we wanted to share a bit more about them so we asked each for a bio and a photo (okay, most were shy about the photos), which we are sharing with you this week. We hope you enjoy getting to know them as much as we have.

Beginning with this week's newsletter you will see ad banners and special promotion buttons mixed in with the content. We ask that you support our website by taking some time to click and explore these offers. Bookreporter.com is part of a privately held company and to ensure we deliver you a great quality product each week, we rely upon sponsors and advertisers. We ask that you support us through them in return.

Early next week we will post our Annual Reader Survey. There will be a special mailing about this. We hope you will take time to respond. We use the results of this survey to plan our editorial features. As the results of our last poll showed that 43% of you have more than 10 books on your reading pile, we know you have some serious opinions about books.

I am off to see Harry Potter this afternoon, which I really am looking forward to. My boys are so excited they will see this on "opening day." I wanted to remind you that National Children's Book Week is November 18-24. Try to book some time to read with a child you love.

As promised, at the end of this newsletter please find a suggested place to donate books this holiday season.

Enjoy this week's lineup...

Holiday Book Roundup --- Part 1

With fewer shopping days this year between Thanksgiving and Christmas, books can save a lot of shopping angst. Over the next three weeks we'll be looking at a wide range of these titles. For many, we'll be making suggestions on how to "package them" with a special treat to make their presentation even more special.

THE CHRISTMAS TRAIN by David Baldacci (Fiction)
Weary journalist Tom Langdon embarks on a hilarious and heartwarming journey in this holiday novel that will charm all who read it. Reviewed by Carol Fitzgerald and excerpted.

ESTHER'S GIFT: A Mitford Christmas Story by Jan Karon (Fiction)
Esther Bolick's decision to cut down on the number of orange marmalade cakes she bakes for her friends on Christmas makes perfect sense --- until she is reminded of what her gift really means. Reviewed by Carol Fitzgerald.

VISIONS OF SUGAR PLUMS by Janet Evanovich (Mystery)
Stephanie Plum is quite busy during the Christmas season, as she chases an elusive bail-jumper, confronts a persistent intruder, and tries to deal with a mob of manic elves threatening to assault her with cookies. Reviewed by Roz Shea and excerpted.

Parenting Books

While it's accepted wisdom that children don't come with an instruction book, plenty of writers have sought to correct that and a recent collection of books demonstrates the breadth of those efforts. Whether you want to make family reading time more valuable, address a specific tough issue with your kids, or find a way to build your child's character, our parenting books can guide you.

Books Into Movies

Attention all of you Muggles (ordinary people in Potter-speak) who haven't read Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets. You have lots of catching up to do. The second movie has finally arrived! Muggles everywhere will now be able to go the movie theater, eat some popcorn, and once again watch their hero on the big screen.

This week's book donation suggestion was brought us by Robert Finn, one of our reviewers. He shared information about the Rainey Institute in Cleveland, an inner-city settlement house type school dedicated to rescuing kids from the mean streets of Cleveland's east side through the arts --- principally music, but also dance, visual arts, drama, literature and capoeira. Students range in age from pre-schoolers through high school. Donations of books can be sent to:

When giving this holiday season, keep this and other favorite charities in mind.
