Dear Reader:
Next week Bookreporter.com celebrates its 6th Anniversary. Thank you to all the staffers, reviewers and readers who contribute each week and make this website a terrific place to talk about books and authors. I have the best job around --- discovering books I love and then sharing them with readers every week. If you would like to celebrate with us, forward this newsletter to a friend and suggest they subscribe. Best present we could get!
Birthdays often bring changes, and this year we have two to announce. As of the next newsletter on September 6th (we are skipping next week), we are going to be moving to a new format. It will have more graphics and a punchier design. Don't worry. We plan to keep everything else the same. One reason we are moving to this new system is because it will be easier to handle our subscription lists, signups and back-end programming. As we grow --- and we sure have grown this year --- we need to grow our systems as well.
The end of this month also brings the resignation of Marlene Taylor, our community leader. Marlene was our first remote employee back in September 1996. She helped us grow the company with chat, message boards, newsletters and a lot of enthusiasm and ideas. She is leaving to start her own company. I want to take this moment to thank her --- on behalf of all of you --- for all she has done over the past six years. Marlene is one of the faces behind the scenes that most of you never saw mentioned, but she is someone who made this a much better place. We wish her all good things and hope to see her name at Word of Mouth telling us what SHE is reading.
Over the past few weeks I have been buried reading books about the events of 9/11. Over 150 titles are being published. We will be doing a feature about some of the titles that we feel are noteworthy on September 6th, along with an AuthorsOnTheWeb.com Roundtable on September 3rd about authors who needed to re-write or otherwise change their books in the aftermath of 9/11. Our poll question this week asks if you plan to read any of these books. Please vote and let us know what you think.
Judging from last week's Poll (over 1300 of you voted) most of you would like to have more time to read. I would too, and I'm doing something about it. I'm ducking out on vacation --- off to the Outer Banks for a week of sitting on the beach, reading poolside and just plain relaxing. We'll be back with a new batch of reviews, interviews and book chatter on September 6th.
Happy Labor Day to all of you....
