Dear Reader:
One of the reasons I started this company was because I like to read. And after almost six years, I still am so excited when I find a new author that I like. Here's my latest recommend --- Brian Haig. His new one MORTAL ALLIES hits the stores on Tuesday. If you like Nelson DeMille, you will enjoy Haig.
As many of you know, I spent the first part of my career at a fashion magazine. One of my colleagues there was a woman named Kate White, who has gone on to become the Editor-in-Chief of Cosmo and the author of a new mystery title also coming out on Tuesday called IF LOOKS COULD KILL. IF (using the same first name euphenism for the book that we used to use for designers --- like Calvin, Ralph and Isaac --- in the fashion biz) is a fun snappy read. Bailey Weggins, the lead character is a smarter, edgier Stephanie Plum and I think that there is a self-deprecating wit to Kate's writing that says, while you're waiting for the new Evanovich in June, you might want to pick this one up. Yesterday Kelly Ripa of Regis and Kelly fame noted this book as the first pick in her book club, so it's a "Ripper." Have you noticed that since Oprah cancelled her Book Club, it seems like they are now springing up like flowers on a hot June day? I stand amused.
There is one book I was very disappointed in recently. It is the one that is being touted as the sequel to THE BRIDGES OF MADISON COUNTY --- A THOUSAND COUNTRY ROADS by Robert James Waller. I say "touted" because while the book has more about Francesca and Kincaid, it also has a new storyline with new characters that to me tarnishes the original story. Read our review by M.J. Rose to see what I mean.
Over 100 of you responded to our Question of the week asking "What is your favorite poem and who wrote it?" Five lucky winners --- Flyinggoat@sprintmail.com, Kozinlaf@aol.com, Mdb123@earthlink.net, PRPflaumer@aol.com and SZ0835@aol.com --- will each win one of THE CAEDMON POETRY COLLECTION CDs. And in our Poll Results, you'll see that your sensibility about poetry is much more sophisticated than mine!
Lots going on this week --- new author interviews, feature and reviews.
Enjoy!
