Dear Reader:
Like many places in the country, New York experienced very unseasonable temperatures this week. Our offices are in a building that dictates that the air conditioning is not switched on until May 15th, no matter what the weather. Needless to say, this made for a rather uncomfortable work situation. I found myself dreaming about beach reads on more than one occasion. After all, a good book can distract you in the worst of circumstances.
One book that we are featuring this week can do just that --- it's a hilariously funny debut novel by an author named Ad Hudler called HOUSEHUSBAND. It's the story of a stay-at-home dad who runs the home while his wife goes off each day to her high-powered job. He cooks, cleans, cares for their child and experiences the trappings of being alone in a child-oriented world. Every woman I know wants a househusband and to celebrate this book, we are running a contest --- Bookreporter.com's Dream Househusband Contest. Winners will win $150, $75 and $25 American Express Gift Cheques! Sound like fun? See details below and on Bookreporter.com.
The other night I caught Larry King Live and saw an interview with 11-year-old Mattie J.T. Stepanek, the child poet who has been getting so much attention these past months. Mattie and his mother, Jeni, both suffer from a hereditary disease called dysautonomic mitochondrial myopathy. It is a rare form of muscular dystrophy that has already claimed the lives of his three older siblings. Mattie read his poetry on air and the stories he was sharing in these words really moved me. The following morning when I logged onto AOL our Senior Producer, Gena Bland IMed me and said, "Did you see Larry King last night? We need to share those books with readers." I agreed. So in celebration of poetry month --- and to honor a very courageous kid --- I urge you to check out HEARTSONGS, JOURNEY THROUGH HEARTSONGS and his latest HOPE THROUGH HEARTSONGS.
I confess that poetry to me always has been "the copy in a Hallmark greeting card." The co-Founder of Bookreporter.com, Jesse Kornbluth, has quite a different take on it. If you have ever wanted to love poetry, but not been able to understand it, I encourage you to read his feature --- and once you do, I dare you to walk away not wanting to read one of those books! Two more poetry features to note this week: In a review of YOU COME TOO by Robert Frost, Tony Parker reflects on how to "gift" your children with a love of poetry and on Kidsreads.com we celebrate Shel Silverstein who touched the souls of so many with his poetry, his humor, and his refreshing approach to life.
270 of you have already voted in our Poetry Poll. Now that I have told you my vote, I'd love to hear yours. So if you have not voted, please weigh in.
In our continuing look at what America is reading --- Colorado Gov. Bill Owens has chosen SNOW IN AUGUST by Pete Hamill, as the book all Coloradans should read as part of a nationwide effort to get people to read....And Ernest Gaines will visit Cincinnati, where they are reading his A LESSON BEFORE DYING.
And now to this week's lineup
