Dear Reader:
This weekend, drought or no drought many people will be thinking green in honor of St. Patrick's Day! While I am Irish only in my married name, I will be whipping up corned beef and cabbage for Sunday night's dinner. (And will do my annual moan about the corned beef shrinking so much that there is little for leftovers.) This week we share with you two Irish features to get you into the spirit of things --- our IRISH AUTHOR ROUNDTABLE where 15 noted Irish authors talk about their work and A WEE BIT OF IRELAND, a round up of even more wonderful Irish authors and titles written by Shannon McKenna. I tip me glass to you in honor of the day.
Next weekend I am heading to Charlottesville, Virginia for the Virginia Festival of the Book. More information about this prestigious book festival can be found here at their website. The five-day program includes author appearances by David Baldacci, George Pelecanos, Homer Hickam, Jeffery Deaver and a host of other writers. I am giving two presentations on the Publishing Day program and am looking forward to meeting with some of the authors we have written about and to, but never met. I participated in this program last year as well, and heartily recommend it if you are in the area.
Also, we've been noticing there are cities that are sponsoring a city-wide "Read In" where everyone is encouraged to read and share their thoughts on a particular book. One of our readers from Long Beach, California wrote in that their city is being encouraged to read TUESDAYS WITH MORRIE by Mitch Albom. The event is sponsored by the local library system and several actitivies are planned for the end of the month. What a fun idea! Let us know if your city is involved in one of these collective Read In projects.
In this week's poll we ask you to share what newly released and upcoming titles are on your "to read" list. We look forward to hearing what you have to say.
Here are the results of the last poll answered by 738 of our readers:
When you shop for books do you always know what you want before you shop?
- 40.7% of you said that most of the time you know what you plan to buy.
- 34.3% of you said that some of the time you know what you plan to buy.
- 14.8% said that you usually just know that you want to read a book.
- 10% said that you always know what you plan to buy.
Now onto this week's lineup.....
