Dear Reader:
This week I read UP COUNTRY by Nelson DeMille; I was absorbed for every one of the 700-plus pages. I had never read DeMille before and though I am a very fast reader, but I found myself slowing down to savor this one. When I closed it I wished there was more. (The last line is terrific!) The story takes place in post-war Vietnam and finishing it I am inspired to visit there.
Our Reading Olympics Poll has been such fun to follow. Over 1,000 readers have voted so far for the authors who keeps them turning the pages. Last weekend I got a note from KBD66@aol.com berating me for not selecting DeMille as one of the 12 bestselling authors. Her comment --- "Good heavens, that French figure-skating judge didn't make up this list, did she?" It was very tough narrowing it down to twelve names. We'll definitely do this again!
This week Jesse Kornbluth, the co-Founder of Bookreporter.com returns to write for us with a piece celebrating John Steinbeck's centennial. Be sure to check it out.
Also, we have an author roundtable with 22(!) African-American authors, features on BACKPACK by Emily Barr and GONE by Martin Roper and a great list of new reviews.
One more note...since we know that MONEY is something on everyone's minds we remind you of a contest we are running: Write Your Own Money Story. Tell us in 150 words or less about your own experiences with money - your successes, your shortcomings, your most embarrassing horror stories! Let us know what money means to you, and how Dr. Klainer, the "money shrink" can help put your own relationship with money on a firmer footing. You could win a one-on-one consultation with Dr. Klainer. Go here for details!
