Dear Reader:

Happy holidays from all of us at The Book Report Network. Here is a link to our holiday card! Make some nice memories these next two weeks.

We are not publishing a newsletter or updating the website next week. We're taking a much needed break to celebrate with family and friends --- and do a little traveling. We leave you with a full lineup of features and look forward to January 4th when we'll back in touch.

In between baking (family already has devoured most of the cookies), shopping (two more gifts to buy; both are books) and other holiday activities, I read an interesting book this week --- THE CHRISTMAS BOX MIRACLE, by Richard Paul Evans. I remember going from bookstore to bookstore in the mid-90s trying to buy THE CHRISTMAS BOX, a book that became a huge hit seemingly out of nowhere. This book tells the story of the book, the writing of it, and how it came to be such a success, which was not as easy as it seemed. It's a great story for anyone who loves THE CHRISTMAS BOX and Evans' later books including The Locket Trilogy --- or anyone who has a dream that they think will never be fulfilled.

While we are away we hope you will let us know what you think is the Best Book of 2001 in answer to our Question of the Week, and also tell us what you are reading in Word of Mouth.

Onto this week's lineup...

This Week's Question

One You Don't Want to Miss
THE NEW YORK PUBLIC LIBRARY LITERATURE COMPANION
edited by Anne Skillion
Simon & Schuster
This lively, entertaining and highly informative collection is a must for any little-known-fact reference collection. But be not wary --- it's not just for book-snobs! With over 800 pages and subjects ranging from where Starbucks got its name to the definition of irony (a perfect gift for anyone under 40 for the i-word alone), no reader will be able to resist browsing through this witty, wise and wonderful volume.

Re-View
Before you check out Kevin Spacey as that schlumpy loser, Quoyle, be sure to read THE SHIPPING NEWS, Proulx's second novel, which won both the National Book Award and the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction in 1993 and 1994, respectively. While you're at it, take another look at THE ACCORDION CRIMES and CLOSE RANGE: Wyoming Stories, two notable titles in her slim but impressive oeuvre.
