November 30, 2001

Dear Reader:

As we were headed into production this morning we paused to do a Newsworthy notation on the death of George Harrison. Also we were sad to learn of the death of John Knowles, who wrote A SEPARATE PEACE, a title that many of us remember from our high school years and we acknowledge him In Memoriam. On a more upbeat note, Oprah announced her latest pick, A FINE BALANCE by Rohinton Mistry. We have a reading group guide about this title at ReadingGroupGuides.com.

This week we share the first installment of our "Best Of the Year" feature with a look at what the editors, staff and reviewers of The Book Report Network think are the best titles of the year in the hardcover fiction, hardcover non-fiction, paperback, children's 4-8, children's 9-12, teen and reading club categories. Enjoy. More lists will follow next week!

We are trying something new this week --- an author VIDEO interview. Partnering with RelaxWithABook.com --- which is based in England --- we are pleased to present an author video interview with Deborah Ellis, who wrote a fascinating children's book called BREADWINNER, about life among the Taliban. If you are shying away from this because it is a children's book, I encourage you to reconsider. This interview is extremely interesting.

Life these days seems to be divided between work and getting ready for the holidays. I am multi-tasking as always and shopping online is one way I am making the holiday preparations a bit less stressful. Quick note: I got an email the other day that free shipping at Amazon.com ends on December 4th! So it is time to get your fingers flying and make those purchases right now. Please keep in mind that shopping at Amazon through this link --- Amazon.com --- supports The Book Report Network. May I encourage you to do that this season? We would appreciate it.

At this time of year everyone is looking for holiday gift suggestions. We are continuing our What to Give/What to Get feature this week with a look at fantastic new gift books for that special sports lover or scifi/fantasy reader on your holiday shopping list.

Onto this week's lineup...
