October 19, 2001

Dear Reader:

The other night I was watching a special on MSNBC about the mission in Somalia called Black Hawk Down. I --- and probably a lot of other Americans --- feel like I am playing "catch up" in the history/world affairs department. I have an entire new lexicon and I find myself gravitating towards nonfiction titles more than I have in the past. I have not given up on fiction, but I am looking at historical books in an entirely new light.

I wondered if you are doing the same thing, which inspires our question of the week --- With everything going on, do you find that you are reading a new or different kind of book?

October as you may know, is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. We decided to acknowledge this with two features --- the first is a roundup of books on the subject. The second is an Author Roundtable on AuthorsOnTheWeb.com with four authors who wrote books on their experiences. Their comments are very inspiring. One note here. While many of you may skip these books because you do not have breast cancer, I urge you to consider reading them for ideas on how to be a better friend to someone who is undergoing treatment, or just to arm yourself with some straight facts.

Halloween is creeping up shortly. Any of us with children know that this holiday is a major event, and it seems to be growing every year. We kick off our celebration with a Horror Author Roundtable on AuthorsOnTheWeb.com. Read their fascinating and sometime hilarious comments on their influences and their favorite tales.

Rounding out the week, a tribute to Lucille Ball --- otherwise known as Lu-u-u-u-u-u-c-e-e-e-e! --- and a look at Anita Diamant's new novel, GOOD HARBOR. Many of you will know her previous work, THE RED TENT.

On to the week's lineup...
